Got $21 worth of games tonight for free by getting a $10 iTunes credit with "Free My Apps" points, and then buying the games on sale from the "Because We May" promotion.

Oh great, Fruit Ninja just added IAP :/
There goes another great app from my iPhone.
Why are so many developers shitting up their classic apps by adding this bullshit now?

Holy shit! We don't need a new Best iOS games list any more, just stick this list in the OP! I've not played all of these, but the ones I have are among some of my favourite games ever. What an amazing sale. Fence sitters, stop asking for recommendations or impressions - this stuff is THE SHIT.

MINI MOTOR RACING HD is FREE!

Always been tempted by this one, reviews raving on the game so who knows, might actually deliver

Post impressions if you get it boys, I'm stuck with no wifi so I can't dl it myself :/
Wow. The handling is certainly.... interesting. Graphics are lovely, appears to be retina quality at 60fps on iPad 3. Weirdly, it's only the 3D visuals that are high res, the menus and HUD are not, which is a shame. I haven't settled on one steering option yet, they all seem kinda bad. But I'm used to Reckless Racing 2 handling, which is so much better. I wish RR2 was 60fps like this though.

Wait... WAAAAIT... Oh god the Virtua Tennis story mode is even weirder than I thought. So every day (REAL LIFE DAY), there are only 3 different tournaments open that you can play. You can play them as often as you want, but there's only 3. one REAL LIFE DAY later 3 new ones show up. But not really "new" either, as today is Hamburg, Stockholm, Madrid, tomorrow is THE EXACT SAME THREE, saturday is HAMBURG STOCKHOLM and Paris, and then sunday is those three again. Wtf Sega, wtf?

Smiley, are you playing Big Win Hockey?

I did, but then I realised with the expiring cards I'd eventually hit a paywall and quit. If I was allowed to keep the cards I'd probably still be playing, but expiring cards? Not cool. I can only get SO much ingame cash to keep replacing the expiring ones with new ones so that at least SOMEONE is playing, but you're never able to really upgrade. So... I kinda stopped. Why?

EDIT: Does anyone know the the because we may website will get updates with the real sale prices or if the "...?" will remain? If they don;t change it I'll have to go check each game. :D Yes I'm lazy like that.

How does the game change for you if you don't purchase any IAPs? I can understand you not buying a game with IAPs on principle if you don't like the idea, but it looks like the game doesn't restrict play if you don't buy them so what's the issue? If you enjoyed it without the extra powerups then why delete it now? I'm genuinely curious.

on becausewemay they have some bad linking which may make you buy an iphone game instead of an ipad game so make sure it is an universal version or the actual ipad version if you want to buy an ipad version

for example swords and soldiers hd links to the iphone version of the game

Just got Bee Leader and man the controls are horrendous.

Maybe I'm missing something but the game is unplayable.

Well to be fair, bees are rubbish at flying, they can't even go through an open window. So maybe they were going for more of a simulation feel? :P

I'm assuming the becausewemay sale only applies to the US it doesn't look like the games have received a price cut on the UK store.

Reduction of price is in effect in the Finnish store. Atleast for World of Goo. Gonna dip into it for the fourth time I think just for iPad version.

Also sorry if mentioned, but GTA 3 is on sale for 0,80€ 'til Monday 28th. (80% off)

Well for instance swords and sorcery universal $2.99 the UK price is £2.99 I guess that could be a sale I'm new to the app store so I'm not sure if it is always 1:1 pricing for regional differences. Other games I was looking at Anomaly Hd $1.99 and £2.49? Although I have realised that in their store description some of the games specifically point out the sale while the two above do not so maybe they haven't been updated yet?

I know I'm talking about a couple of pounds here and there but I just don't want to buy it and find out they didn't update the sale prices yet.

Because the high score tables are now based on power ups which can be bought with real money. Same thing happened with Ninjatown: Trees of Doom a couple of weeks ago. Same thing happened with Bejeweled a year or so back. What's the point in having rankings when power ups can be bought?

To make a living?
Sure, and I'm saying it's an easy way out and I refuse to support it. You can make a living by releasing new games or sequels. But charging people for power ups, just so they can one-up their friends in the rankings? That's lame, imho.

Have you seen how they work? You can earn star fruit to spend in this store for powerups, or you can buy them. They're not outrageously priced either, and while every game you'll usually earn 50cr or so (for reference, the lowest of each bonus is 3/350cr) every three or four there'll be a bonus one of about 250.

If you've seen how Halfbrick implemented IAP before (at least, with Jetpack) you'll see that they're not doing it like other companies trying to dig into people's pockets. If you're good enough, you won't need to spend money. But if you aren't, the option is there should you choose to take it.

Have you actually fired it up since the update came out?

Well they already got your money so it's not like your wallet vote really means anything now.

Personally I just don't sweat the rankings, I compete with myself (only child syndrome!). If it's a game you like to play, optional IAP shouldn't be an issue.

A few of the titles have not been discounted yet.
S&S is one of them.

It is currently US (reg price) $2.99 iPhone, $4.99 Universal.

Anomaly Warzone Earth also has not been discounted yet.

and, lol, Zaga decided to raise their price for the sale :
http://mightyvision.blogspot.pt/2012/05/pricing.html
So while I kind of get the point of this sale, I feel like it's going about things backwards. Dropping prices - well hey, they might be too low already, the thing to celebrate is being able to set them higher. Get out of this race to the bottom.

So I've signed up for the sale. And it amuses me to set the sale prices higher than the originals. Make of this what you will.

Jeeeesus at all the sales.

Picked up Burnout Crash and Infinity Blade 2.

GTA3 and CW for $1 each is a steal.

Dead Space for $1 is good, I liked that game.

Thinking about Mass Effect Infiltrator.

Burnout Crash orright for a buck?

Edit: Somehow, on the AU store it's $2. I hate quibbling about a dollar here or there, but given it's a game I'm barely interested in, that's the tipping point.

Man, that is bullshit. Ive seen EA do the same thing with other sales before too.

Man...Jetpack Joyride updates with new toys literally hours after I purchase the 50K piggy bank jetpack for shits and giggles.

Oh well! Time to keep prestiging!!!

I haven't played it, but impressions seem to suggest that it's a bit poop. I know Dave didn't like it when he bought at release, and impressions above talk about crappy controls and game mechanics that encourage random scribbling. Save your couple of bucks, go buy yourself something pretty.

Is it just me, or does the "massive" Fruit Ninja update not actually add any new content? Apart from the power-ups. And it doesn't seem to tell you how much they cost?

The new Jetpack Joyride gadgets are pretty cool though. And the new soundtrack with the headphones is excellent.

So Defender Chronicles 2 impressions.

1- Their UI is a complete freaking mess. There's no on-screen feedback to show which defender spot you have selected, which is crazy annoying. If you tap on a spot, then tap on another spot, there's NOTHING to show you which spot you have selected. That's only the first problem with their UI right now - the upgrade process is ridiculous (tap on a spot, tap on the upgrade button in the lower right corner, tap on the spot again) which is a lot of hand movement for a simple action. Probably would be served MUCH better if it was a tap spot -> tap again to upgrade type of deal, or with a little popup menu when you tapped on the spot for multiple actions.

There's a LOT more of these problems like when you drag an item from your inventory in the stash (where is there even this I don't know) - you get a MASSIVE popup that follows your finger, so when you want to drop an item into the slot, the popup is drawn over everything else, making the drop action much harder than it should be, the hero level up screen is hidden too far down and the costs to upgrade are really badly shown, etc.

These problems don't make the game unplayable or anything, but it's a real hassle.

2- Tons and tons and tons and tons of IAP. I understand why, and I respect their decision, but essentially after the first mission you open up an IAP-only store with a ton of stuff that down the line I fear will be a necessity to win. Some of these, like the Double XP + +30% tokens are cute, and I understand why someone would want those as they reduce grinding, but it's something that will deter some.

3- The visuals, while very beautiful, are... weird. The animations are non-existent (it's basically 2-frame deals, and it's funny as hell on the big flying bats since they seem to only have 2 states), and in the first level at least the color schemes are fucked and it's very difficult to make out defenders over the background. It's like they all mesh together and makes it kinda hard to make out.

4- Overall, so far it seems to be the same game as the first - the first hero you have is Melwen, the mage hero, and she's pretty powerful and such.

I'll have to play more, but I'm somewhat disappointed in the game. After Kingdom Rush, you *really* have to step up your game when you release a tower defense game, because these guys made an almost perfect game, with very few problems.

If they fix their UI (which I doubt, it's essentially the same as in the first one) a lot of the game's mistakes would be alleviated.

I'm glad for this "Because We May" deal. I would never have tried out Super Mega Worm Vs Santa before simply due to the name, but for the price of free and listed among so many other greats I just had to.

Fun and nice "I can do better next time" for quick play through while it's paused in the background for most of the day.

Yup. That's about all the Fruit Ninja update adds. :/

Yeah, I'm a big fan of the first game, and my initial impressions about the UI are it's pretty bad like you say (tooltips pop up right under your finger and hot spots are extremely small). Even building the towers in the first game was a bit easier because the icons were circling the selected tower spot, so you knew where it was and didn't have to move so far either to accept it. The animation issues you mention don't bother me, and the game is essentially what Sword & Poker 2 was to Sword & Poker 1, builds on the original and makes it obsolete without any drastic changes. Defender Chronicles 2 seems to be Defender Chronicles 1 with much, much more.

The IAP stuff is said to be completely optional, and given DC1's history, I believe it. Yes, it's a shortcut to winning, but the point of the game is sorta the grind/RPG aspect, and the IAP defeats that. They said the beta testing was done without the IAP for DC2, so the game is balanced fine without it. It's a harder TD in that you're not supposed to roll past higher difficulties on every level on the first try too, as the difficulty is tied to both strategy and the loot/leveling aspects.

In their defense, they should offer pretty good support and a game the size of DC2 is a pretty big undertaking for just a few people in their spare time, but I think you're probably best off waiting on this one if you're unsure about the game. It is still a very unique take on TD, outside of Defender's Quest on the PC, I haven't seen many tie in the market / RPG aspect so heavily.

Edit: And my tolerance for apps that don't support fast-app switching (like how DC2 does not) is really thin :( Hope that gets patched in as well.

I bought Defender Chronicles 2 also, and coming from Kingdom Rush the interface is absolutely atrocious, to the extent that I can't believe it wasn't picked up during testing. Every little part seems to purposefully make a new player unsure what is going on.

The problem with the animation, imo, is that the rest of the visuals look pretty good, so it's kind of jarring to see relatively high-quality sprites with very basic animation...

The thing is that I have trouble taking the "it's what S&P2 was to S&P1" because the original came out in what, 2009? 3 years for a graphical upgrade is a long-ass time, especially since the rest isn't super polished.

If that's the case, I have no problems with it. Fully optional IAP is something I have zero issues with - see Jetpack Joyride, for example. You can grind it out and it becomes a non-issue, so if it's the case here, then I don't mind them at all.

I'll give it some time, too. I loved DC1, and spent a TON of time with it, beating all the hardcore difficulties, playing for long-ass times in the endless levels, etc. Hopefully this'll work.

I also laughed when the reward for the first level I got was some wand that had the most ridiculous name: "Brittle Keen Major Ice Wand of the Arcane". It's pretty ridiculous :)

That "Because We May" deal.... Jesus christ. Even without the sales it acts as a great purchasing guide. So many good looking titles that I've never heard of before.

iOS gaming is NOT doomed. But my wallet certainly is.

$65 total

Yeah, woke up this morning and my AppShopper wishlist was lit up with a slew of price drops. I would probably buy more stuff, but my wee phone is out of space. That list of games, though, definitely is a good "what should I buy" guide.

The steering is kinda loosey goosey, but somehow it works perfectly for this type of top-down racer. I think I prefer it to the way most other similar racers I've played on iOS handle.
