Instead of focusing our dislike against the judge or the parents, the girl really needs help. She reminds me of a friend who takes care of her family, including her sick mother while her dad's in jail. She also enrolls in the same university as me and partakes in a few part time jobs, while maintaining a 3.7+ GPA.

I want to help this high school student since she's so deep in the hole, but I don't have that kind of power. I hope for the best for her.

It's illegal to drop out of high school? Texas's graduation rate is in the 80s. How are there not more people being thrown in jail?

Judge is stupid instead of worrying about whether the girl and siblings are being properly taken cared of he cares about her cutting classes. I hope he is harassed with letters and phone calls for months for this ruling.

Unbelievable and makes you feel bad about yourself that a fucking idiot is able to become a judge. A fucking judge.

Judge has no common sense and clearly should not be in the position he's in. Annoying story.

Man, injustice really bothers me.

This is fucking injustice. In my opinion, not only should the teenager not be punished, but arrangements need to made to put her and her siblings in a more stable environment, and the judge needs to face impeachment for egregious error in judgement and for further endangering this teenager.

her parents are awful people and should feel awful

the judge is a fucking embarrassing excuse for a dispenser of justice. he should be jailed for 24 hours as an example not to be a dumb fuck

It's amazing how much work some students are willing to do in order to succeed. It really is. I'm at Texas A&M and I know many students who are doing engineering (full time, 15 credits) AND have full-time jobs. Hell, I know a guy who is doing engineering, has a full time job, married, and he is also expecting a baby soon. His wife does not go to college and have two jobs to support her husband and she plans to finish her education after her husband finishes his degree and is able to support the family alone . The guy lives on coffee and sleep 4 hours max during weekdays.

On the other hand, some of my other friends who have a schoolership can barely maintain a 2.8 GPA even though they don't have any jobs or anything to do.

Life is unfair.

i plan on starting my handwritten letter with 'hey asshole' but i can't figure out where to go from there before blacking out.

This was mine. I put it together quickly and furiously, so it's not very good, but eh...

Dear Honorable Judge Moriarty,

I recently read that you sentenced a teenager, Diane Tran, to jail for missing an excessive amount of school days, despite the fact that (a) her parents are continually absent from her life, (b) she works jobs to support her siblings, and (c) she is an honor student at her school with exceptional grades when she is able to attend.

I must say that I am highly disappointed with your decision. I normally do not write to tell people that I am disappointed in them, but your judgement seems so prone to error that I believe you must be told.

Your job -- your only job -- is to ensure that justice is served. What you served to this teenager is injustice. How can you possibly sleep at night knowing what you have done? There are convicted criminals that I respect more than I respect you at this moment, as at least a criminal had the courage to hurt their victims while running some level of risk. You, on the other hand, ran no risk when you hurt your victim because you sat in a cozy chair with the law of the land on your side. Having the law technically on your side does not make a wrong-doing right.

As a result, I am asking you to correct your mistake by doing two things: (a) setting this teenager free and (b) apologizing to both this teenager and the community that you serve for making such an egregious, faulty decision unbecoming of a justice of the peace. If you cannot do that in a timely manner, then I hope that the community serves you impeachment. We need binary robots to manufacture goods, not serve justice.

Thank you.

What the shit am I reading.

Just wow. I mean, wtf? How dare she try and support herself and her siblings! Scumbag incarnate, this judge.

This makes me fucking furious.

I can relate too, I had a very similar although not as serious situation over the last 5-6 years. I'm writing this guy an email/letter.

Bullshit.

Weird. Usually on a first offense, a student would have the option of being prosecuted in "teen court". But they don't take truancy lightly here in Texas. Sometimes social workers here will take a kid out of their home even if the kid is being homeschooled. Get your ass in the public school system of you're subject to hard time!

Hey? Hey Judge? You're not a law robot, you're a human being interpreting the law according to context and situational information. Do your fucking job.

WHERE THE HELL ARE THE PARENTS?!?

That's a good question. They just up and divorce and... she has to support her siblings? (One of which is in college so should in theory be able to fend for himself by dropping college after a semester to help her and their younger sibling out) Where is the mother/father to support them? Why is she having to take two jobs to make ends meet.

There's way too many "that's bullshit" factors in this but given the state of shit in the nation, I can't really be outraged or shocked by this situation outside of the parents bailing factor.

I can just imagine this guy sitting at the bench, eating his BBQ in true Texan style, licking his fingers and reading a law book at the same time, saying, "Mmmm...says here that yer 'posed to be jailed if yer not goin' to skool. And well, I don't let the young'ens run wild, so...yer goin' to jail, little lady! Giva ya some time to think about what you done wrong! Now git!"

This was mine. I put it together quickly and furiously, so it's not very good, but eh...
While I agree 100% with everything you wrote, it is way too emotional and is not going to be taken seriously by the judge. Honestly, it's not going to be easy without injecting some emotion into any letter written to him, but this comes off a bit too strong.

Nonetheless, I feel you.

Probably. But I figured he probably is not going to take it seriously regardless of what I say, so I figured I might as well go all out.

I hope other people write him letters or faxes, too. Despite being supposedly insulated from political motivations, judges can definitely feel heat in numbers.

She's taking AP classes. If she passes them, it'll help her out later on in college, so she really should keep attending.

True, but usually teachers, especially AP ones, are aware of their student's situations so they probably understood her situation and gave her the benefit of the doubt and gave her the work early so she wouldn't be behind the class.
