I see the word 'character development' thrown around a lot in this thread from the impressions. I'm not well versed in film talk, so, what is it? Some examples will help too.

The ability to fit in strong characters in a movie shouldn't depend on the time lenght. Just watch Alien - that breakfast scene is better than just about any character scenes in any action movie in the last 2 decades.

And yet one of the main complaints against Alien at the time of release was how two dimensional the characters were and how their deaths meant nothing.

Yeah. I re-watched Alien back in February and the only characters that I felt were fleshed out were Ripley and Ash. What other characters had time to be fleshed out? The interactions between them were great, sure, but there wasn't a lot of depth to many of them.

Parker was an ASSHOLE

The characters in Alien and their interactions feel very authentic to me, more so than characters in most films. The portrayals are generally low-key, but that's because they're a pack of truck drivers (in space). I suppose there's a difference between depth and real, believable characters, but given the nature of the story, I think they go above and beyond.

Parker was an ASSHOLE

But he backed down when called out. Dude was all talk but had his head on straight. Except during his death scene, in more ways than one.

A bs complaint people throw out when they can't find anything real to criticize about a movie.

The Departed makes Alien look like Alien vs Predator.

I love the Departed. But no.

all right, the critics are ambivalent/positive about the newest Ridley Scott sci-fi film! sounds like it could be one of the greatest films of all time!

Rottentomatoes

85% - 11 positive, 2 negative reviews.

Good start.

Ok, Im glad to see its climbing up a bit higher, Im still a little worried because I don't want to read reviews for fear of spoilers so I can't be too sure what some peoples issues have been.

Reviews seem to be all over the place.

Well, scratch this movie off the list of seeing in theatres.

Will wait for TV premiere.

I hope you're joking.

Worse still, the film is clumsy and heavy-handed when dealing with the
twin-themes of faith and religion, the screenplay threatening to collapse under the weights it its own lofty theological ambitions in the final act.
7/10
Eee

It'll never be one of the greatest films of all time because it's not enough like Alien and it won't live up to my unreasonably high expectations.

I like my Sci-Fi derivative, thanks!

I am being facetious. I'm happy it's not like Alien. Don't flame me.

Their interactions are great but like I said before that isn't something you notice the first time watching. It's not until a subsequent viewing that you appreciate all the little moments the characters share. I imagine Prometheus will be the same. The more we watch these characters the more attached we will get to them. The casting for this film is phenomenol and I imagine that will prove important especially for the smaller roles.

Right Brett?
Right.

For those who don't want to be spoiled, like me, read just the reviews posted here, don't highlight spoiler tags (duh), try to find just the rating the user gave to the movie, etc.

I looked at rottentomatoes but I only watched the numbers, didn't read anything.

Why are people actually surprised that a movie whose director who hasn't directed a single memorable scene (let alone a movie) in almost three decades (yes, three DECADES) is getting bad reviews?

People, this is not gonna be as good as Alien. I'd be surprised if it was as good as Black Hawk Down. Which wasn't exactly great.

I think the people who say this intentionally ignore movies like Kingdom of Heaven. Why do you do that?

I will say again; I shan't take notice of a review except my own and when it comes out on home release and isn't being compared to Alien. A lot of 3 stars will become 4s I reckon.

Because Alien received unanimous acclaim from the press upon its release, right?

It didn't.

Yup.

Kingdom of Heaven Directors Cut was magnificent.

It's currently at 63 on metacritic.

I'm a huge fan of the first Alien. But being an 'Alien movie' doesn't mean shit anymore. And being a Ridley Scott movie doesn't mean anything either.

So I don't get the hype, and I'm not surprised that the movie is actually, according to many critics, a typical Ridley Scott failure : a visually great movie that's just not that great (or even good).

Actually, that's pretty much how I feel about Blade Runner too. I sometimes wish that Blade Runner had really great scenes in it, because the universe is awesome, its visuals are just perfect, and the characters could have been interesting. It's just really cold, and not that interesting.

That said, I will still see Prometheus. But my hopes aren't high.

P.S. I think Kingdom of Heaven might be the only Ridley Scott film I haven't seen. That and that shitty love flick with that shitty Russell Crowe guy.

It's getting good reviews. Unless I'm looking at wrong Rottentomatoes, 85% is more than good.

It's currently at 63 on metacritic.
Well, it's metacritic and I have no idea how they valuate movie reviews. Avengers has 69% there, and that's heralded as 2nd coming of Bejeezus in terms of quality everywhere, and has 93% on rotten.

Yep, KoH:DC, but even moreso: Gladiator. I know GAF thinks it's one of the worst movies of all time, but in real life, it's actually a fantastic movie with tons of memorable scenes.

oh yeah Gladiator is amazing, one of my all time favorites bar none. however, the critics have spoken and Prometheus will be a disaster.

I would've said Gladiator too, but that movie doesn't receive as much critical acclaim. Personally, I love it. And you're right: there are many memorable scenes. The opening battle, "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius," Maximus and the Commodus fight, the first fight in the Colosseum, etc.

Metacritic actually read the reviews and they give a note. Rotten only says if a review is positive or negative. There's a big difference between Alien and a competently made movie that's going to garner "positive" reviews.

Avengers is definitely a 69. God that movie was overblown.

And yeah, Gladiator is fucking shit.

Gladiator is good popcorn fun, but KoH DC is much better.
The Avengers is good popcorn fun...jeeez. Like I said, on GAF Gladiator is severely underrated, probably because it won Best Picture. KoH:DC is awesome too, but it's a little less memorable and doesn't have quite as good acting (except Edward Norton).

I don't know what to say, as I didn't see it yet, except that I don't know anyone in real life who saw the avengers and disliked it, and you're probably the first person on GAF who I read something like that from. Even all the verified Wheedon haters seemed impressed, which made me think that whatever Metacritic does must be broken.

Also, Gladiator sure as hell had memorable scenes, even if movie wasn't some kind of perfection as a whole.
