And yet one of the main complaints against Alien at the time of release was how two dimensional the characters were and how their deaths meant nothing.
I would argue that irrespective of reviews, this film is a showcase for cinema artistically, visually and for 3D.

Yeah. I re-watched Alien back in February and the only characters that I felt were fleshed out were Ripley and Ash. What other characters had time to be fleshed out? The interactions between them were great, sure, but there wasn't a lot of depth to many of them.

The characters in Alien and their interactions feel very authentic to me, more so than characters in most films. The portrayals are generally low-key, but that's because they're a pack of truck drivers (in space). I suppose there's a difference between depth and real, believable characters, but given the nature of the story, I think they go above and beyond.

Ok, Im glad to see its climbing up a bit higher, Im still a little worried because I don't want to read reviews for fear of spoilers so I can't be too sure what some peoples issues have been.

It'll never be one of the greatest films of all time because it's not enough like Alien and it won't live up to my unreasonably high expectations.

Their interactions are great but like I said before that isn't something you notice the first time watching. It's not until a subsequent viewing that you appreciate all the little moments the characters share. I imagine Prometheus will be the same. The more we watch these characters the more attached we will get to them. The casting for this film is phenomenol and I imagine that will prove important especially for the smaller roles.

Why are people actually surprised that a movie whose director who hasn't directed a single memorable scene (let alone a movie) in almost three decades (yes, three DECADES) is getting bad reviews?
People, this is not gonna be as good as Alien. I'd be surprised if it was as good as Black Hawk Down. Which wasn't exactly great.

I'm a huge fan of the first Alien. But being an 'Alien movie' doesn't mean shit anymore. And being a Ridley Scott movie doesn't mean anything either.
So I don't get the hype, and I'm not surprised that the movie is actually, according to many critics, a typical Ridley Scott failure : a visually great movie that's just not that great (or even good).
Actually, that's pretty much how I feel about Blade Runner too. I sometimes wish that Blade Runner had really great scenes in it, because the universe is awesome, its visuals are just perfect, and the characters could have been interesting. It's just really cold, and not that interesting.
That said, I will still see Prometheus. But my hopes aren't high.

It's getting good reviews. Unless I'm looking at wrong Rottentomatoes, 85% is more than good.
Well, it's metacritic and I have no idea how they valuate movie reviews. Avengers has 69% there, and that's heralded as 2nd coming of Bejeezus in terms of quality everywhere, and has 93% on rotten.

I would've said Gladiator too, but that movie doesn't receive as much critical acclaim. Personally, I love it. And you're right: there are many memorable scenes. The opening battle, "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius," Maximus and the Commodus fight, the first fight in the Colosseum, etc.

Metacritic actually read the reviews and they give a note. Rotten only says if a review is positive or negative. There's a big difference between Alien and a competently made movie that's going to garner "positive" reviews.
Avengers is definitely a 69. God that movie was overblown.
And yeah, Gladiator is fucking shit.

I've only watch Kingdom of Heaven once, and it was a long time ago to be fair, but I'm not sure why people rate it so highly. I'd put Gladiator above it.

I don't know what to say, as I didn't see it yet, except that I don't know anyone in real life who saw the avengers and disliked it, and you're probably the first person on GAF who I read something like that from. Even all the verified Wheedon haters seemed impressed, which made me think that whatever Metacritic does must be broken.
Also, Gladiator sure as hell had memorable scenes, even if movie wasn't some kind of perfection as a whole.
