See, the thing some people forget about TDK's 3rd act is that it is flawless.

The boats, man. The fucking boats.

You can question the quality of the scene, but it was far from filler. Besides, the boat people had like 2-3 minutes total screen time.

When I think of filler, I think of Transformers movies. Especially the sequels, they could have easily knocked off like 30 minutes from those movies and we would have gotten the same plot. At least with Bad Boys 2, it went 30 minutes long because they had to destroy an entire Cuban villain for no reason.

I just felt like it was pretty extraneous to the actual film. I didn't really care if either of the boats blew up or not.

If you ain't been waiting over a decade for Deebo's redemption, you ain't been living on this Earth long enough to have a valid opinion about anything and that is a god damned fact.

The boat scene isn't filler. It's just a poorly conceived and even more poorly executed idea that should have never been in the movie. But its not filler.

I wouldn't say TDK has any filler, to be honest. Plenty of ho-hum scenes, but not filler.

:O

Dent's words when showing Joker the coin: 'You live. You Die'
YOU LIVE TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY!'

Nolan closet Friday fan confirmed.

Damn straight. Zeus has been picked on far too long, he finally gets his hero moment and people want to shit on him.

A bunch of Ice Cube fanboys up in here.

Christ, you'd think TDK's third act killed babies or something.

It's because after the tragedy that happens to Harvey when things are feeling very raw and dire, it feels like the film should be getting ready to deliver the final blow. What we get instead is another hour of Joker fucking around with hospitals and boats, peppered with Dent antics.

He should have killed both boats and bats even more tempted to kill him.

Just make sure you bring your pillow to 3 hours of Nolan, Solo. Third act is 35 minutes of Batman driving back and forth on the batpod in front of his army giving his best William Wallace speech before the final battle.

Still completely disagree. The boat scene itself is somewhat corny, yes, but I still think things stay rather raw and dire throughout the second half of the movie. The terrorist plots on the hospital, the warning to the people fleeing Gotham, the bomb rigging on the boat all set up the fact that Gotham's under siege... it's not just limited to the main characters, but the whole city now.

Not to mention, the whole boat scene is the culmination of the point the Joker's trying to make to Batman: that anyone can become freaks like them. It's also gives the movie a much-needed moral victory, because the good guys had been almost continually losing up til that point.

Oh the horror in seeing another hour of the best villain of ALL TIME. Someone shut this man up.

My problem isn't with what it was trying to do, but how it did it. The boat scene was just really awful. What made it particularly bad is that it made us stay with a bunch of Gotham citizens which - let's face it, are some of the most annoyingly cartoony characters around.

Just think it was a little poorly executed. I cared about Harvey, Gordon, Rachel. I just didn't particularly care whether or not the prisoners or civilians died.

I love the rest of the film though, it hardly strikes a bum note apart from there.

I'd hate to use the word "realistic" here, but seeing how much closer Nolan's Batman films hit home, one of the boats should have exploded.

Yep. I would have liked it more if it didn't feel like such a cop out. Joker should have been right and Batman tries to continue to convince himself to fight the good fight anyway. Or they don't blow themselves up, but Joker does - successfully.

Oldman is old man
That's the same thing I told my friend after Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. But maybe he's just great at acting old.

Wouldn't that fundamentally change the message of the movie, though? We're supposed to be left with the idea that we aren't actually the chaotic animals that the Joker see's us as. If one of the boats blew up, it would change the entire philosophy of the film. The Joker was a nihilistic character, but TDK is not nearly as nihilistic a film. His character's downfall thematically validates Batman's faith in humanity.

Then again, the Joker could have detonated the bombs himself, but then the entire third act would just feel derivative of the hospital scene. I think Nolan was probably right to draw the line where he did.

Fuck you guys for bringing up Prometheus in any way. I wanted to see that without knowing anything about it in regards to story/reviews, etc etc.

For reals. I really didn't want to read that about Prometheus. I was having a good ol' time being blind until Monday. Prometheus reactions shouldn't be mentioned in this thread. :(
