Would you ever consider running for public office?

Municipal, state/provincial, or federal. Would you ever consider campaigning for public office? Is there any reason you'd want to try to get into the wretched hive that is government?

Just curious how many GAFers wanna try for public office one day and what reasons they'd wanna do it.

Its something I've thought about. Nothing I'm planning on or anything but I could see running for something on the local or state level someday. I do genuinely think that I could do some good, especially on that level.

I thought about running just to make some noise even though there is no way I would win an election.

Only if I would win!

edit: The higher the office, the more time playing politics, the less time solving problems... I think I'd only be interested in the extremes of this spectrum

Probably school board, especially if I lived in an area under threat by anti-science zealots. Otherwise, I lack the great charisma/win-at-all-costs/millions of dollars to do much else.

If I had the chance to, I would. Would most likely be a better politician than the current ones anyways. Politics needs more normal people who know what everyone has to deal with.

Not personally but my good friend's life's ambition is to be PM of Canada. I honestly see it happening. Within 20-30 years is my guess.

I am definitely planning on running for a local office in the next few cycles. I live in a conservative suburb of Omaha. Wonder if I can coax them into coming around to reality.

Often times I think some politicians actually have noble intentions when they start out.

That is, until they're surrounded by lobbyists and greed, and become manipulated by money.

Best job ever.

God she's a terrible Catwoman. All the women in the new Batman movies are subpar. God DAMMNIT.

Hell no. I'll stick with my usual stance on the subject in general:
"Opinion is politics, and politics is an evil which has caused many a fellow to be hung while he's still young and pretty." ~ Wizard and Glass

no.

They could have casted better. Much better. Dammit I realize now that he's selected nothing but alt-culture women, hipster chicks. The girl from Dawson's Creek, the chick from Secretary, and now the other one all the nerds think are hot. Sure put on some makeup, some high contrast lighting, a professional photographer, she's not ugly, they can highlight her pretty qualities. The first pic, I don't even recognize who's in the first pic.

Anyway, if I were to be a politician, I'd want to be one like the Rascal King. Maybe with less mob connections if I could help it. I love my people, I bring home the bacon, I do real good, for the poor and middle classes, and let the rich have a bone or 3. But you take a potshot at me, and I come down on you like a ton of bricks. I wouldn't want to be a Kennedy or an Obama or a Clinton or a Nixon, or an LBJ or even an FDR.

Hipster women? What? Cotillard and Hathaway are hot.

You wanna debate this, that's fine, but over in Bat-GAF, cause it's amazing there.

I wonder how difficult it is to get into politics and not get so corrupted like Congressmen, senators, and MPs obviously are sometimes.

I guess it'd be easier in local politics?

I am currently a countywide, non-partisan, elected official and I'm running for re-election this cycle. In 2008, I got more votes than John McCain did in my county. It's a very minor position, minor enough that the first time I was elected, I ran as a write-in because there were only three official candidates for five positions.

I was considering running for state representative until I found out that a friend of mine was already running for it. If he doesn't win, I'll probably try in 2014, otherwise I'll probably look at school board.

As for why, I've always loved politics and been a bit of a policy wonk on issues I care about. I also think I bring a deliberative approach to how I vote more so than some of my fellow officials. Even though the body I sit on (and actually chair now) is largely a rubber stamp to our professional staff, I have gone off and challenged them on otherwise uncontested issues to be proven right in the end. Simply due to the volume of bills, I know I couldn't continue that if I ever do make it to the state house, but I would definitely try on the important issues.

I suppose I would if I had the time, money, manpower, and awareness already lined up to do so. My gut reaction to the thread title was "No, I'm not qualified or knowledgeable enough", but neither are countless others in various levels of government, and I can always learn.

Of course I might change my tune if I was actually faced with the task of running for office, but we'll probably never know.

What do you think are the qualities and knowledge that someone whose running should learn/know?

I flirted with the idea but I am too introverted, too objective/progressive, and I would hate catering to peoples stupidity just to get elected.
