Rumor: Sega Europe about to close, no more Sega AAA, focusing on digital only

GOOD GOD NO

WHATS WRONG WITH YOU
Namco Bandai's not much good either, but at least that has the amusing angle of their biggest arcade competitor and the company they failed to merge with in the 90s absorb them. Sort of like a more screwed up version of the Sqauresoft/Enix merger.

Hey guys, Sega had a console out like 10 years ago. Sega had a console out when MIB 2 came out, and now they're basically dead when MIB 3 came out. Fucking weird...

Since I don't think I was clear enough, Sega Sammy's market cap is $5 billion, and it's doubtful you could buy them that cheaply anyway.

There is almost no one in the industry with enough money to even consider this.

Now, trying to buy brands off of Sammy might be feasible, but not the company itself.

If Sega Europe dies does it automatically sound the death knell for companies they own like CA and the football manager guys??

I doubt it, they're both solid money maker's for Sega and they fit perfect with Sega's digital future considering they're both PC franchises.

thisis all your guys fault for buying stupid playstation 2because of dumb hype and rubber ducky bull shit The Dreamcast had everything gaf saysthey want original titles and non sequals and this is how you return the favor. have fun with your go of war and the next uncharted that with still crud shooting and have fun with psn going down again over and over.

rofl rubber ducky

It'd seem more likely you have a deal that untangles the two rather than buying the whole thing, and Sammy may want to keep Sega for whatever reason. Maybe they still do well enough in Japan?

Nintendo to buy sonic confirmed.

Well, the digital stuff is actually pretty profitable, which is why they're still making it.

I imagine some of the local handheld stuff makes a fair amount of money as well like Miku, and that requires next to no one to keep going.

GAF is funny because it will go out its way to be upset about things. Even going as far as to fantasize them and frame it in a more believable context (e.g. "rumors").

Oh excuse me... Yakuza 5 will be the last one! What a way to go!

To be honest, I'm more worried about their games leaving Japan than whether or not they still make them there. It really does sound like they have enough successful stuff there that there's no reason to back out fully.

I think going into 2013, the new industry (not just Sega) message is going to be this: the technology pissing contest is over. I know there will be exceptions to the rule (as always), but I just don't expect to see the envelope infinitely pushed like it has been, insofar as development costs are concerned.

The upside is that games may be cheaper to development, and they may actually be more fun for people who don't like all the frills (like me). The downsides are (a) people who like the frills may see less of them, and (b) I am willing to bet there going to be even larger scale layoffs in the industry -- much bigger than what we have seen thus far, anyway.

Ah... I... *blush*... have you happened to come across someone named... *blush* Dexter...? I uh... *sweatdrops* ... it's not like I like him or anything *trips* ... onegai...

*Goes to look up who Dexter is.*

Sonic Wiki said:
Dexter (デクスター) is a fictional boyfriend that Amy Rose fabricated in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, to make Sonic jealous.

Dear god, BioWare. Dear god...

...On second thought, maybe not...

And oh lord at the bolded because I can see it happening.

Is it one of these terrible DLCs that are either too expensive or on-disc shit?
$5 for a single costume in Tales of Xillia. And there are a ton of costumes and accessories to boot.

what the christ
You've played Sonic games. You know how much of an idiot Amy can be. They just took more cues from the Archie comic series to magnify her ditziness. Hence, the Dark Brotherhood seemed to have its roots in the Dark Legion stuff that Penders wrote.

Sadly, being realistic, this has been pending for a while. The only real losses to lament are the future of more HD ports, Yakuza, and the talented devs under their publishing umbrella, namely Platinum.

A BioWare Sonic RPG about "Sonic's friends" made no sense right around the time of Mass Effect 1, but thinking about it retrospectively with Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 3 in mind... it makes too much sense.

That's a digital only game, so it should be fine and a prime part of Sega's new strategy.
Oh, must have slipped by me that it wasn't getting a console release. I did hear about an iPad version so I guess this does fit perfectly into their plans.

Wow... Fuck Namco.

It's too bad that those games didn't share Sonic Chronicles's wonderful music. It also has the best remix of Sonic 3's final boss theme ever too.

If they can be bothered to fully translate it and support the servers needed to run it.

It's never been a priority in the West, let alone with all this upheaval. If it's not at E3, and it was missing from the line-up wasn't it, then I think we can kiss any hope goodbye.

it would seem like sammy could drum up enough value in sega itself to justify selling it off?

gutting the company to focus on a much smaller market seems odd, as they'd be cutting value out of the company... the sega division still produces reasonable sales. though i can see dividing the business between consumer and arcade not easy.

at the same time, how well is sega really going to do focusing on f2p/apps... seems like a disaster unless they want to go out and acquire outside talent and invest even more. i want to think pso f2p will be big, but come on :P

also, wasn't namco the original suitor for sega? and all this time we said sega dodged a bullet by getting sammy...

Could Creative Assembly's closure/downsizing be the "recent high profile closure" in Brighton that I've been seeing in job listings. Sounds like they're forming a new studio.

I believe a GAFer works at Sega UK
