um, the role of netflix? sucks obviously, the content isn't there. that is my whole spill with the service and that's why i have cancelled it.

why should i use netflix when i have xfinity online that have 10 times more content then hulu, prime, or netflix combine? I don't get your point about that post when i clearly stated why i canceled it and why others should just get cable and use xfinity for free. thus making netflix irrelevant. :/

If you don't have cable and use netflix as an alternative, great. i just think that netflix isn't or never should be used as an alternative. whatever though. to each there own.

53 dollars for preferred hd cable with all premium channels. 82 dollars bundled with cable internet. Hell of a fucking deal.

I'd like to know how you're getting all of that cable for $40 a month. Here I can't get basic HD service for under $65 a month. Add in the premium channels and it's around $105-120 depending on fees and other stuff. I suspect your $40 arrangement is the exception rather than the rule.

I paid "$100 a month" for cable with Comcast (my only option) until I canceled it recently. My bill went from $173 to $67 (for internet only). It all depends on who your provider is and where you live (it's more expensive in metro areas). Where I am, it literally costs $98/month to get most digital cable channels and ONE premium channel — and that doesn't even include the total cost of the HD box and DVR service (another $15 or so). There are always promotions to cut down these costs if you add features, but they don't last forever. It took me a long time to realize that it just isn't worth it, and I haven't missed it at all in the month-plus since I canceled.

mine is the comcast double play with showtime/hbo being free for 12 months then 10 dollars for starz and encore. everything adds up to 82 dollars without the lease of modem and hdr. But if you take out the internet, its really is just 60 or so bucks.

Wow, never realized how easy it was to access the US netflix, so much more stuff to watch!

The role of Netflix is to serve as a back catalog of older TV episodes and movies along with some documentaries and a few recent movies here and there. It's meant to be more of a supplement to cable/Redbox etc. rather than be the main medium through which you watch movies/TV shows. Anyone expecting it to be filled with a bunch of recent movies such as an on demand cable service is expecting Netflix to be something that it's clearly never been. That's why your original post was so odd because contrasting the content offerings between the two is such an apples-to-oranges comparison due to the difference in price and licensing deals, among other things.

Funny you say this because it has become my sole source of television and movies aside from my blu ray purchases. There's such a huge backlog of movies and television shows that I've never seen or haven't watched in years that I could spend months watching through my queue and not see it all. People are really not giving it enough credit.

You were doing it wrong.

Netflix is an online repository for old TV shows and movies, not a source of the latest TV shows and movies. For $8 a month having all that stuff on demand for a quiet day is brilliant. I use Hulu+ to get access to all the latest TV episodes.

my bad, i understand that. i just prefer xfinity online though. i mean, it has EVERYTHING. It also includes hulu too from their site. :0

I agree, and I'm completely satisfied with the catalog. I'm pretty selective with what I add to my queue (don't want to overload it), but I still have a TON of stuff to watch. I'm currently re-watching 24, which has 192 episodes alone. I could watch two episodes every night (which would be overkill for me) and be entertained for over three months! To me, it's an awesome deal.

You guys. Here where I live Comcast charges $130 for cable + internet + phone. We just do the cable + internet and that's $100. That includes one premium channel: HBO. Under ideal conditions I get 20 Mbit down and 3 Mbit up. Also a 250GB data cap per month.

The main competition, the local electric utility which wired the entire county with fiber, has comparable prices.

Stranger Than Fiction is another good Will Ferrell movie. It is lighthearted but not really a comedy. It's on crackle now but should be returning to netflix soon for anyone that cant watch movies on crackle for some reason.
 
Went on kind of a binge this weekend.
  • No Mercy (2010, S. Korean) - Terribly plotted. So many WTF moments, I can't even begin to recommend it. Take the title literally.
  • Drive - Brilliant film. One that I think I'll find myself mulling over again and again for months, if not years.
  • Atrocious (2010, Spanish) - Fun found-footage film, with good pacing. I thought the ending was fine, although I believe a good fraction of people will find it annoying.
  • Tucker & Dale vs. Evil - This was awesome. The gore is pretty strong at times, but HOLY COW can it be funny. "Are you ok?"
  • Groundhog Day - Had never seen this classic Murray film. Cute premise, good execution. Would not watch again, though. I feel like I've seen it several times already.
Good times.

I have U-Verse, to even get ESPN and your "typical" cable channels like TNT or Cartoon Network, I have to pay $105/month with Internet. I get the 24/3 (down/up). I could go cheaper internet and it would save me something like $15/month at most if I remember.

It includes an HD DVR, which wasn't any cost. They do charge a $10/month for HD though.

I'll probably cancel the cable if I don't have a contract. I don't think I do. They just take back the box. Internet alone would then be $63/month.

I wish it was cheaper, but I have not seen anyway to get such without getting cheaper internet or no cable. I can get cheaper cable, but it won't have ESPN or Cartoon Network or anything like that. Only Home SHopping Network and the Food Channel or FoodTV or whatever it's called. This is still $90/month.

Edit: Cool netflix finds, I gotta pimp my 2 favorite finds: The Answer Man and Morning Glory. I had never heard of either, but they are now my newest, favorite movies probably of all time.
 
I'm going to have to call bullshit on that $40 a month Direct tv with hbo/showtime/stars/cinemax. Unless you're an employee or something how are you getting it so cheap?

I just checked on their site and to get the premium channels alone is over $40

HBO = $15.99/mo
Sho = $12.99/mo
Starz = $12.99/mo
Cinemax = $12.99/mo

That alone is $54 a month.

Unblock-us is a great solution, you get all the benefits of being in another country without the encrypt/decrypt overhead of a VPN connection that sucks for streaming media.

$7 Sports Package(GolTV, Fox Soccer)
$10 Whole Home DVR(give of take a buck)

-$10 AAA discount
-$30 refer a friend discount(one more coming in a week of two)

+ $8 Netflix
+ $79 Amazon

I get my cable for about $40 and total averages about $60/month. Netflix takes care of my tv show needs and older movies, amazon gets me more stuff not on netflix and two day shipping, and directv takes care of my soccer and current season show needs. HBOgo is a nice bonus.

I am canceling all the Premium channels tomorrow after Game of Thrones records and the sports package since it's the summer break so I'm excited to see what my directv bill amounts to.

I never have nothing to watch.

This middling movie is almost worth watching just to see a guy get Voltron'd.

The Thirteenth Floor is a really good cyberpunk neo-noir in the vein of Dark City. If you like that type of film, you should check it out.

I've said this for years. It's an awesome movie that too many people discredit for being too close to The Matrix. That movie didn't pioneer alternative realities, people!

Punching the Clown gave me the most laughs of any comedy I've seen lately.

Kind of surprised me a bit.
Not the greatest movie, per se ... pretty low budget, some of the cast ain't the greatest, and some of the story arc don't work so great ... but it had some of the funniest fucking lines I've heard in a while.

Very cynical, sarcastic and indie to a fault ... maybe too much so for some, tho.

Seen Dale & Tucker vs. Evil? Enjoyed it, but has some gross-out parts too. Went in expecting not much, left very satisfied.

Edit: Watched Troll Hunter. Amusing, but ultimately not a strong finish. Cute premise.
 
If you like stand up, check out Jim Gaffigan's Mr. Universe. I'm a fan of Gaffigan, and this is pure gold.
 
I just finished the red violin last night

5 stars, recommend

i started brick after, so far it's quite good, initial impressions i can give a solid 3 maybe 4 stars.
 
Watched True Grit (2010). Good movie.

It's kind of A Serious Man good, but not No Country for Old Men good. (Nothing can touch Lebowski, so I won't even go there.)

Also watched The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009). I didn't actually need to watch the
rape
scene, but even with that it was a brilliant movie. Really top notch.
 
I watched Hellraiser 1-9 over the last week so here is my comprehensive review

1 & 2: were decent and I liked the creatures
3 & 4: lol
5, 6, 7, 9: Surprisingly good
8: Dumb

Now there is a hole in my life for a terrible horror series :(

Strange how the hastily rewritten scripts are better than the third one.

There aren't many long running DVD shlockfests on Netflix unfortunately.
 
I watched, well tried to, Gingerdead Man 3: Saturday Night Clever. It's quite possibly the worst thing I've ever seen. It was so bad it became funny and worth mentioning. I can't recommend it but, if you feel like doing something stupid (which I did last night) go for it.

The Friday the 13th series is mostly back, only one missing right now is part 5 (at least from 1-8) and the remake?, obviously watching for the lols.
 
Dream Home is one of the most violent movies I have ever seen. The kill scenes are just fucking brutal. Almost up there with Human Centipede 2....actually in some ways even worse.

Fatso is a foreign comedy that I got a kick out of. Totally recommended.
