Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced in 2006. It is now 2012. These are facts.

I'm giving them up to and including TGS to have a blow out on this game. My interest levels drop by the day. At first I was interested to see just how big of a JRPG Nomura was going to make for the PS3. Given its long development time, its unlikely it'll be exclusive, so the shine rubs off a bit there too.

Square really need to announce things closer to release. Shorter hype cycle --> release. Much better.

It felt within the FF feel to me. FF is always changing but it had the core elements.

I felt the style was back to being a original fantasy world as in VI, rather than more post-VII anime tropes.

Sure you're right, every FF reinvents itself and reboots the series pretty much. I agree. However, 12 left many of the FF staples behind. It was an Ivalice story with an FF name on it and Chocobos with Moogles.

I agree.

But then I'd go even further and say it wasn't a great game either. The weird pacing, total collapse of the narrative, and kinda offbeat battle system did not click with me in the slightest. I kept on waiting for the game to "go" but it felt like it was just running place until I made it about 70% of the way through and put it down.

I kinda agree with you, but if you play it as a Western open-world RPG it feels good. Do the side-quests and explore. Don't play it as you would play Final Fantasy. I think I only really felt the FF vibe at the start of the game (till you get your full party) and then maybe at the very end.

People were amazed by fancy SE CGI and actually not a single minute of gameplay until 5 years in and even then it was only like 6 months in "full production".

People fell for something that, dimply, doesn't exist.

I smell a "Revengeance" case now, they have NO IDEA what to do with it.

Apart from the last sentence you're completely right. All we got was a teaser trailer, a CGI unveilling of a game that will be set in the same universe as FFXIII and was shown as an example of a different take on the mythology.

As for the last sentence, I actually think they have a pretty clear idea what they want to do with it, after such a long time in pre-production. It's just about finishing the game's production, which only started last year.

I have the same opinion.

Final Fantasy XII was just something other and probably did more hurt to name it Final Fantasy XII than naming it Own title.

Also butchering story and characters didn't end well too. It was MMO closed in Single Player RPG.

Completely agree. The weak story and pacing (for a FF game) kinda did it for me.

and amnesia. lol

But I just felt XII and VI were original fantasy worlds.. akin to something like a good Ghibli film.... more divorced from the post-VII shonen manga influence (Nomura). I love all the FFs but those two felt different.. and I want more.

Blaming Nomura again? Don't go down this line, please.

There are plenty of good reasons to criticize Nomura, but Kitase definitely has to get credit for the poor quality of a lot of recent Final Fantasy projects.

Nomura was/is simply a character designer for FF. A director comes to him, tells him what kind of character he wants and Nomura draws it.

He is the director of Versus, though, so if that flops we can blame Nomura. But right now it is SE's most anticipated title.

I agree on Kitase as he wasn't able to reign in Toriyama for both XIII and XIII-2 well enough.

Toriyama and his poor storywriting/directing, too.

I'd say writing only. Toriyama is actually a pretty good director, you just kinda have to reign him in once in a while (I mean he did direct the story sequences of FFX after all and after X-2 and XIII-2 it seems that he's fairly good at directing mission based, non-linear FFs.

The wait for this game would be easier if there were more than one good FF title this generation, and if that title was not stuck in Japan.

I think Toriyama is a bit like Kevin Smith. He's ok with writing small character moments and vignettes, but he also has an obsession with inserting sexual kinks (Aya's clothes, Cloud and the hookers, X-2 in general, etc.). He's definitely not an Action Movie star, that's Nomura's domain.

I think that's why FFX is still fairly well praised from all camps. It had the right combo of character moments and action moments and worldbuilding. And it was a collaboration of THREE directors, including Toriyama. Which suggests he only works well when restrained.

Ok so it's finally June 4th - we have both the MS and Sony conferences in a few hours, who thinks this is getting shown. Despite the absence of the game from any of the exhibititors lists I still believe we will get a new trailer and ballpark release date. The new consoles will dominate next e3 and quite possibly be out before the end of next year. My guess is this will be at the sony conference in trailer form and release spring 2013 - in the same way XIII was Shown back at E3 09. Anyone agree with this?

Never going to happen this year. IF anything was to be shown, it'd be teased through Famitsu and TGS. But again, this year? Ha! Ha ha ha haaaaa!

It's time to let it go.

Officially not being shown.

Goddamnit. The bump had me excited that there was a leak. I thought it was said that it wouldn't be shown at e3.

Sorry no such luck - wasn't creating a new thread just for my own personal prediction so I dug up this thread. I have a strong feeling this is going to be a surprise at either MS or Sony's presentation - it's a big game and just the kind of megaton that is realistically achievable and would get people talking about whoever shows it. It's time for this thing to get shown again and released.

EDIT - can't let this one go... not yet.

I think we feel this way at every E3 or TGS

It'll only be that if they really do decide to call it Final Fantasy 15. Anyway, I don't really expect it to be there in any form. Many are speculating that Square is going to use this E3 to push their Western developed titles.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think it will be on the show floor in any form, not even as a behind closed doors demo. It will be a new trailer with some new CG and gameplay and a release - that's how it was in 09 with XIII. Nobody expected that there either, TGS would be the full unveiling. This thing has to release at some point and going by squares release schedule for FF mainline over the past few years that would be December in Japan and then March in the US/EU. This ain't dropping in 2014.

It´s probably been brought up sooner but I just wanted to put in my thoughts about this.

Versus has been in development hell for so long I´m starting to believe that S-E doesn´t even want to release this game because of the exclusivity.

This deal was done before anybody even thought that Sony would do so poorly. If it was multiplatform I´m pretty sure it would already been released if S-E could do FF 13-2 fast why can´t they do it with Vs. We´ll probably get FF 13-3 before Vs. witch is really depressing.

I wasn't aware we had an official FF12-2.

The development status of the game has nothing to do with PS3 exclusivity. It's just the state of HD development over at Square.

FF13-2 got done fast because they had a finished game design they could build on, along with assets they could reuse, and the engine for 13 is viable for 13-2. If you're thinking of drawing a parallel between the development of 13-2 and Versus, you're barking up the wrong tree.

There's FF XII: Revenant Wings, but it was released on the DS, so few FF XII fans cared.

Sorry about that I meant FF 13.

The last time I heard some news about S-E they were talking about two years development cycle and how they were sorry about development taking to long. So the earliest we can expect the game is end of next year if the reports about Versus going into full development in early 2011.

This game was the reason I bought a PS3 and I still don´t know a single thing about the game 6 years later on. Why all the secrecy, I just don´t get it.

Best thing is to just change the name to FF 15 and release it next-gen.

FF15 will probably be slightly more on the medieval side anyways, given the so far successful pattern of sliding up and down the sci-fi/fantasy scale.

ff9, FFX, FF11, FFx-2, FF12, FF13, FF14, FF13-2.
Next one should be a bit more on the dragons and knights if the pattern follows.

They probably won't do this, but why do you think it'd be terrible anyways?

Well this is obviously just my opinion but for the following reasons -

- If it launched say 2014 as a next gen game it would, most likely, look fairly poor graphically in comparison to other software.

- Launching in 2014 to early adoptors would be at most 3-5mil potential sales. Launching at that same time on PS3 provides a userbase of 55-65 million (easy) potential buyers. Sales logic dictates this is a better option.

- They would have to redesign assets and start much of the production over again to support next gen tech - unless, as said before, it's a dirty port job. I can see the logic of porting it as well as releasing it on PS3, but to go next gen only at this stage seems like madness... Then again - SQUARE ENIX.

Valid points, but S-E has done this before.

FF13 was originally designed on the PS2:

Note that's a Rikku based model since Lightning and Vanille didn't exist yet.

FF11 was originally for the PC and the ps2 a bit later. Then inexplicably it jumped a console generation and joined the xbox360 4 years later.

FF4: The After Years came out on cells in 2008, then was released on the PSP in 2011. (technically a remake, but still a bit of a console jump).

And if we even further back in time, FF4 was originally a NES game, but finding details of that is REALLY hard.

Also, Zelda: Twilight Princess springs to mind as well, since it was for the cube but simultaneously made it to the Wii. I think that may be an unprecedented move, however.

S-E making some bizarre console switches both before release AND after release seems par for the course, really.

Moving FFXIII away from PS2 was one of the worst decisions they ever made, it turned into a money and timesink of gargantuan proportions and it damaged their entire homeconsole development for this generation.

I think changing the name would help, but this idea of moving to next-gen comes up in every Versus thread, and I see no logic behind it at all.

It's the light at the end of the tunnel for some; acting as an excuse for them to buy the next console, in turn, justifying the delayed release of the game.
