Nintendo E3 2012 Conference Thread

That's skirting the issue massively. All I was talking about was what they showed on stage. That's all that I, and everyone else in that thread, cared about. Did you think we want a Vita-like situation where they ignore the majority of games?

This was all about the conference. Admit it, you were wrong.

Haha. I guess I'm missing what I'm supposed to be wrong about especially when I specifically said "my opinion" which you clearly quoted. As I said I can't control what they decided to show on stage. If anything I should have been clearer about what I meant by execution.

The main problem with this conference was it showed almost nothing that we didn't already know about.

That's down to the internet, get used to it, conferences are no longer for surprises, they are merely a presentation to the industry. Gone are the days where a company could keep anything worthwhile a secret, you fill up on information on a daily basis now where-by it used to be spoon-fed to us.

Based on that I agree that E3 is losing its relevance due to the number of information feeds we have these days.

Sure they could've shown you a bunch of stuff that you didn't know about, but what's the point if it aint ready yet or is just generally boring uninteresting shit.

I don't think Nintendo realise they've got 12 months to get core gamers away from buying a PS4 or 720 by default.

Really poor showing and it's obvious they're catering purely to current Wii owners with the U.

This conference has been hyped to hell for over 6 months, and this is what we get? Fucking shit. If we don't get Zelda 3ds or something new, at the 3DS presentation, I'm gonna go cry in the corner, clutching my Gamecube's handle ;((((.

I went into the conference with very low expectations and they still somehow managed to be worse than I thought. Can't imagine what it would be like to have actually been hyped for the conference.

A late port of ME3 is not too bad I guess. If it runs at 1080p native resolution, 60frames per second, I will buy again with no hesitation. If not, forget it. Same with all the other ports they are looking to bring out.

but why? you already played it. not necessarily trying to ignite a debate on purchase decisions.. Buy what you want, when you want..

but at the same time, that's exactly why companies think it's OK to launch their console with year old ports.

Did they blow it really? If Nintendo Land is their next Wii Sports, I'd say they're laughing all the way to the bank again.

why should gamers care that they're laughing all the way to the bank? that really turned out great for the wii, didn't it?
this conference just proved that wiiU is shaping up to be wii2. great with the casuals, awful with the hardcore crowd after a year or two.

So even if we assume Nintendo first party efforts are in the pipeline (duh), where is the supposedly obvious 3rd party support? I thought Black Ops 2 was basically confirmed? Where is the EA Sports stuff?

Yeah, this was very disappointing for me.

The launch lineup is pretty packed as is, but it's much more focused on casual gamers. I'll pick up NSMBu, ZombiU, Pikmin 3, and AC3 most likely.

exaggerated backlash here is astounding.

Just astounding.

It was a meh conference. They blew it.

So that means Wii U will never have any games besides Pikmen 3, NSMB U, and Wii Fit U... EVAR.

Pack it up, Nintendo has stopped developing games!
It reminds me of many of the comments regarding Vita. That the Vita is dead because of what was shown at this year Sony's E3 press conferance.

Might just be me, but I've found "i'll wait until later" always works out to be the smart choice in gaming.

Many people seem to have the patience of a mayfly, or something.

It's not even an exaggeration; it's like those people who sell their xbox when a game doesn't come out for 2 months that they want to play, then buy another when the next Halo is out, then sell it again.

I really am wondering if some do literally think Nintendo is not making any games because Starfox, Zelda, F-Zero, Fire Emblem, 3D Mario, 3D Zelda, Smash Bros, and Mother 4 were not at the pres conf.

Might just be me, but I've found "i'll wait until later" always works out to be the smart choice in gaming.

It's always the smart choice, yeah. But I do like shiny new toys, and Nintendo platforms will always be bought eventually. Sometimes I just go "fuck it" and grab it at launch.

The Wii U might still end up like that for me, but yeah, the conference was a slap from reality. That maybe I can hold back my desire for expensive new toys and just wait awhile.

Kajima, I like your posts. But there are really no excuses for the product they put out.

We know there will be other games for Wii U. We always know Nintendo's developing something. There'll be a 3D Mario, a Zelda, etc. But E3 is a stage to communicate your vision for your console, its future, and its library. It's the perfect time to give little morsels to whet your appetite. We got nothing of the sort here.

The launch lineup as shown didn't reflect the learned lessons of the 3DS.

Most of the stuff shown here we've seen before. And they didn't really excite a lot of us then either.

Nintendo absolutely learned from the 3DS launch. Do you think 3DS would have struggled releasing with NSMB? Also Pikmin is a bigger franchise than Pilotwings, or Steel Divers as far as core games go. Come on people, you can do better than that...

I will say it wasn't the best show, but they specifically stated they are only focusing on software releasing in the narrow launch window.

Nothing is stopping them from previewing upcoming games in the days to come, ala the Project P-100 post-conference bomb.

Nintendo definitely didn't go for the hardcore crowd even though that was what they said last year. None of their own games were core games, and none showed what the hardware could do either. Very disappointing imo. It's seems like it's all about the third party now, until Zelda or a new Metroid arrives we won't see Nintendo push the hardware at all audiovisually from what I could tell. Pikmin 3 was okay I guess, it looked fun, but not next gen in any way. Ubisoft was the only one that showed how to treat the WiiU imo, Zombie U looked so much better than anything else show, definitely next gen. But will the rest of the third party devs push the system as much? and will they use their AAA teams? I'm not so sure.

lol Nintendo's show wasn't bad until they hit that lame-o Nintendo Land crap. I still say Sony had the best show of the bunch. I'm definitely gonna hold out on getting the Wii U at launch though.

Haha. I guess I'm missing what I'm supposed to be wrong about especially when I specifically said "my opinion" which you clearly quoted. As I said I can't control what they decided to show on stage. If anything I should have been clearer about what I meant by execution.

Then why even say anything?

NINTENDO IS GONNA HAVE AN AWESOME E3 GUYS!*

*as long as they actually show the things in development which I have no idea whether they actually will or not

BUT IT'LL BE AWESOME! GUARANTEED!**

**no claim is made that it'll actually be awesome

I have a feeling it won't be 1080p, 60fps, or Reggie would be of bragged about it.

"You can play Mass Effect 3 in its best form possible, right on the couch, only on Wii U"

It might seem rude, but I wish that in the future, they would restrain their presenters to either 1) Their own guys or 2) Third party execs who are native English speakers.
I agree. It's too painful with non native English speakers. The Iwata ND was real uncomfortable too.

one old EA title and ZERO Activision Titles... we all know this is the way to win the next gen
I know. Was what they showed really all they could get? No EA or Activision on stage?

The textures in Batman looked worse than the PS3 and 360 versions of the game. How is that "pretty good" for a system that has more ram in 2012?
I was thinking how awful it looked too. Nintendo showed nothing that graphically impressed.

People at Nintendo should lose their jobs over that conference. It can't be said enough.

But then wouldn't Iwata have to be fired? I mean, surely he had last say on the overall content of the conference? Or are people from NOA allowed to dictate a lot of what ends up in these conferences? Honestly, I'd be really embarrased right now to be Reggie or Bill.

Nintendo's E3 conference wasn't horrible. It just wasn't very exciting or interesting. Then again for a show that is meant to showcase a new platform, that is pretty sad...

Prior to this conference the deep down Nintentard in me guaranteed I'd buy the system at launch. And even though such a thing is still possible, I suppose the most shocking thing for me about this conference is the reality slap that I probably won't be missing much if I wait it out. The software line-up is one unappealing game after the other. It's like they're making a console specifically not for me.

Pikmin 3 is a shoe-in, and I'll get Mario eventually, but that's about it. P-100 will probably be fun. And that's it.

As it stands, the Wii U is the kind of system I can look at and comfortably say "I'll wait until later", because until the inevitably great things come, there's almost nothing of value.

And I bought a 3DS at launch. In Australia.

In fairness, this IS a system launch. These things historically never come out of the gate strong. About the only exception was the Wii and maybe the N64 (solely on the strength of Mario 64).

Not to defend the dull conference, but let's all have some perspective here.

I wouldn't expect much better for Sony and MS's launches either, honestly.

The Last of Us destroyed anything Microsoft offered on their conference, and it's exclusive, I don't understand these types of comments. You must have liked Fable: The Journey. The only good thing about Microsoft's conference was Halo 4.

Eh? Last of us presentation was pretty boring.. Nothing we haven't seen before. Sonys show was easily the worst of the 3. The lack of vita alone was criminal

It reminds me of many of the comments regarding Vita.

We had confirmation of such developers, let alone the first party working on games for it? Come on now, that's a ridiculous assertion.

Nintendo supports their own consoles, and their franchises sell consoles, unlike most of Sony's first party offerings. The 3rd party support at launch is not bad either.

It's always the smart choice, yeah. But I do like shiny new toys, and Nintendo platforms will always be bought eventually. Sometimes I just go "fuck it" and grab it at launch.

In a way they were doing us all a big favour, haha. Also, they sold me on a 3DS already, so there's that!

Tomorrow's conference should be good.

The problem with all three conferences was the lack of surprises other than a few select titles. People like being blown away, and most games were already expected.

That said, in terms of what Nintendo showed, they had as much as Sony of Microsoft. Whether people were impressed or not is merely subjective. The games were there, but there weren't any "knock you out of your seat" type announcements or footage, and that's what people want.

Looking at the lists of games shown in each conference, all have compelling content. But at this point it just takes more than that to impress anybody.

This. Definitely this. At some point e3 became about DAH MEGATONZ. People want "betrayals" like FF XIII for the 360 and Peter Moore coming out with GTA tattooed on his arm. They want that level of drama. In this age of constant leaks (planned and unplanned) and the rapid-fire gaming news delivery that is GAF, there is just no way that those types of dramatic moments can still happen. E3 is really just a trade show now, for better or for worse.

As much as I love Pikmin and Mario I need more than that.

I'm waiting. Maybe a long time. First time I will have done that with a Nintendo home console since the NES. (I didn't get it until I was seven in 1989)

I can't believe they didn't have more than that.

Man, that was shit.

Does anyone know what time Nintendo's Developer's Roundtable is?
Looks like it'll be our last hope for seeing something interesting
from Nintendo...

So many tier one first party developers are missing in action. Third party support looks poor at best. EA had center stage last year; this year, it looks like they've elected to scale back their involvement. Most of the third party games were introduced last year already. There are still many unanswered questions about the Wii U's online. No game looked particularly impressive graphically, though to be fair, I suppose the ground up titles looked okay for first wave games.

The presentation was uneven and had several peculiar inclusions. Nintendoland took way too long and looks cheap and lazy for the proof of concept game; it should be a pack in but it looks like it isn't. I'm not sure why they took ten minutes to talk about the 3DS when they're just going to rehash it all tomorrow evening. The banter between the executives was awkward.

The conference was boring and thoroughly predictable. I suppose Nintendo had no leaks because there really wasn't anything ready or worthwhile to leak.

Are you fucking kidding me?

IF the developer uses the whole systems power on a game then of course putting another view just as good looking on the GamePad would cut the framerate. But no there's absolutely no reason at all for framerates to be cut as a rule. For instance two maps on two different GamePads isn't going to effect performance noticeably.

Nintendo needed some graphical showcase to sell the hardcore on the system. Instead they showed another 2D Mario game and an amusement park mini game.

I don't think Nintendo knows what they are doing.

This 3ds software showcase better knock my socks off. Everyone thought Nintendo had too much goodness to show and that's why they had to spread out all these events. So far it just looks like they wanted more opportunities to talk.

The Lego game might have looked good, but those games are easily the ones whose series has evolved the most graphically this generation. The newest ones look incredible, they've been 60 FPS (some drops) with motion blur for a while now. The Wii U version of that one game does not necessarily show off the system in any unique way.

So are we getting one of those Nintendo roundtables in the next couple days? And there's that 3DS conference tomorrow, right?

We never saw gameplay for the last of us, and uncharted is the only other game that I can think that comes close to it gameplay-wise but The Last of Us clearly looks better and moves better, enemy action/reactions are better, has a better partner, etc.

So tell me, what about HAlo 4 is new then? Halo 4 looks and plays just like halo 3 and halo 2 and halo 1, just with better graphics. Tomb Raider? looks just like uncharted (and yes I'm aware that uncharted took a page from the original tomb raider but now tomb raider took a page from uncharted). Resident Evil 6? what new thing does it have?

The only new thing was fable the journey and that was just horrible.
