I have no idea which is why I asked. :)
... Really?
All right, then... I may not always agree with him, but Ebert sounds like a fairly smart guy to me, and I hoped he would be among the ones calling Prometheus out for its lazy writing and sophomoric attempts at profoundness.

have you seen it?

Maybe he's not as quick to disdain a movie because it reaches for things it can't quite grasp. Or maybe he though it achieved what it set out to do fairly well. (I haven't read his review... I know him, he probably summarizes 2-3 key scenes so....)

Just saw it last night and it was great. Sure, the story doesn't directly lay everything out in front of you and it's up to the viewer to piece a few things together but that's one of the things I loved most about it.

As Ebert says in his review, he's a sucker for movie concepts that hint at things beyond human comprehensibility, especially if they involve questions of science or humanity's place in the cosmos. I think he gave both Tree of Life and Watchmen four stars for similar reasons. He may have found the attempts at profundity somewhat less sophomoric than you did.

Again: what do you think?

It purported to be a science fiction movie about "big ideas", and I wouldn't say it achieved what it set out to do at all, there. In fact, it gets quite idiotic fairly often.

I know, which is why I thought he'd be more critical...

Apparently so, hence my disappointment.

I enjoyed it's story. It's "lazy" writing is better than 95% of the movies released today.

So disappointing. :( So much potential wasted. It all felt underdeveloped and erred on the side of silliness when it should have been tense and horrifying. Cinematography and production design aside, i think it could have been executed better in pretty much every respect. The characters were the main issue. They were all so poorly realised other than David, who pretty much stole the movie, if only for Fassbender's performance.

Damn. What could have been. That's my main feeling upon leaving the cinema. :/

This is what I think to myself everytime I watch Sunshine. I hope this movie isn't like that for me.

Sunshine just ended in Event Horizon-style silliness, always ruins it for me - I like how Prometheus ended... though going by most of the impressions I think I'm in the minority :P

I thought the ending was alright. Certainly not a cliff jump like Sunshine.

My main disappointment stems from other aspects of the film.

Hey, I've been banned for awhile and couldn't take part in the discussions.

Now's as good a time as any to ask:

Are there any cool/scary creatures in Prometheus? Everything I've been reading is extremely disappointing, as it seems that the aliens aren't in it at all. Is there at least anything remotely scary? The weird cobra thing that they showed in the trailer looked weak as all fuck.

Go ahead and spoil me; I don't really care about being spoiled. Black bars are fine.

There were some truly jarring scene transitions and tonal shifts that had me going "wtf?!". You could tell they removed some transitional scenes of some sort... or maybe the screenplay was just that poor. Lindelof's fingerprints were all over the dialogue. Lots of completely unearned moments that had me eyerolling.

This is what I think to myself everytime I watch Sunshine. I hope this movie isn't like that for me.
That's exactly what i thought about Sunshine as well.

Yea, seriously if you take the first 2/3 only, Sunshine is my favorite sci-fi movie of all time, and close to my favorite movie ever. That last third though....goddamn, what a waste. Still one of the best sci-fi movies though. Going into Prometheus with huge hype, so I'm bound to be disappointed in 2 days. Woot!

I'm finding I enjoy movies a lot more not reading threads, even after seeing it. No matter how entertaining or good you think a movie is, there are tons of people telling you how shitty it is.

Gaf movie threads, no one likes anything.

Exactly. I think i'm just going to go and watch it for myself.

So, for those who've seen it, what's the main issue that they had with it? Wasted potential? I'm just trying to keep my expectations in check.

My main issue is with the pacing, it seems like the second half of the movie didn't get as much love/time as the first.

Wasted potential is a flaccid statement, there was nothing to waste and it's a solid and bold sci-fi flick. Wasted potential translates to "not what I wanted".

Wasted potential, most characters not being well developed, people acting stupid, movie cliches.

Just go in expecting a fun sci fi blockbuster and you should be fine.

I saw it just now, and I was as hyped as anyone until I started hearing impressions. I seem to have restrained my hype just enough however, cause I really enjoyed it.

The main problem for me was the script. What does that even mean, I here you ask. Lame dialogue basically. Lines that fell flat.

But it doesn't matter. It looks so good. All the 'sci-fi' stuff is so pretty, and the concepts are interesting enough for me.

Fassbender is a bonus.

My problem was that
I was expecting something more grand and philosophical to the extent of why this mission was so important. Important to the scientists/selfishness, but not believable for the rest of humanity. It was really a cliche'd ridden movie with some nods here and there. Entertaining, but not as profound as I would have liked it to be.

also, saw it in 3D. NOT WORTH 3D admission price. As amazing as the sets and cinematography are, 3D effects were not "immersive" and really felt like tacked on.

Got my tickets for the opening midnight show IMAX 3D!

Wasted potential, as in the movie had the potential to be truly brilliant, but was let down by a terrible script. There is a great movie in there. I'm fine with the basic plot, but so many parts are executed poorly, are tension-free and don't resonate the slightest bit - all as a result of of poor characterization and lack of build up.

I read that Scott wants to do a Prometheus 2. Wonder if he'll do that or the Blade Runner sequel first.

I think pre-production has already started on the Blade Runner sequel... but I'd really rather see this continued.

Blade Runner has always been it's own thing where as Alien has already seen so many variations that I don't mind seeing more (yes I realize the irony of this given BR's like 7 cuts.)

Ah I see, DC will (hopefully) be sorting all that out.

Blade Runner's a good movie, but I don't have that deep love for it like other people do. I dig space horror though a lot.
