They touched on it in the DVD commentary. Some people believe that Homer was being unnecessarily mean and nasty to Grimes, while others just felt that it was just Homer, but turned up to 11. Depending on how you view Homer in that episode, you'll either love it or hate it.

Personally I love it, and it's one of my favorite episodes. I don't think he was being very mean at all, and it was clearly shown that he wanted to be friends with Grimes, or at least get Grimes to like him.
 
It's Homer being Homer, if not "caring and nice Homer". He goes so far as to invite Grimes to his house with the intent of becoming friends and showing what an upright guy he can "try" to be. The real jerk-ass was Grimes. I could sympathize with his struggle, but he went out of his way to sabotage or embarrass Homer only for it to (rightly) blow up in his face. But somehow Grimes' backfires make Homer the bad guy? Really the only "Jerkass Homer" moment I can recall off the top of my head was the "change the channel Marge" at the end.

Or maybe it's because he's endangering the entire town by not taking his job at a nuclear plant seriously. That combined with Grime's shitty life makes Homer the bad guy. Homer wants Grimes to like him not because he cares about what he thinks but because he wants people to like him. Both Grimes and Homer were selfish jerks but in different ways.

Homer not taking jobs seriously is basically 50% of the show...

It's a betrayal of the entire ethos of the show. It's like if you love "the office", and someone comes into the show as a character and starts loudly and obnoxiously pointing out the jokes. "HEY GUYS, DWIGHT IS WEIRD OMG". It's like a painfully stupid and obvious version of "thatsthejoke.gif"
 
Grimes episode hate is damned wrong. Wouldn't want something like it every time, but a stunner as a one off episode. For me, it's the perfect series finale; having so heavy deconstructed itself, the Simpsons was finished.

And, of course, they ruined it later by including a son of Frank Grimes, conceived by a prostitute, who tries to murder Homer. Garbage.
 
Grimes episode is shit.

Its parodying and poking fun of the worst elements of the show. The bits that were causing the obvious decay in quality. I see the common complaint against it is Homer is a jerk, but he was always a bit of a jerk anyways. When Flanders Fail, Stark Raving Dad, and Saturdays of Thunder. All from Season 3 had him kind of an asshole. But when Flanders did go broke due to his wish. He was there to make it right. He has always been selfish, dense, idiotic, and everything Homer's enemy was trying to convey, but he had a conscious. He wanted Grimes to like him just because he didn't want to be hated. And right to the bitter end, they played up on it without every acknowledging the good side of Homer. Its an episode crafted to pick on the absurdities without acknowledging the heart.

And it is exactly what Simpsons lost. That is why that episode is shit. Nor is it the only one in the earlier seasons which are terrible too. Secrets of a Successful marriage is pathetic.

Fuck that reveal! Ugh.

One character I'm glad they never brought back to be "destroyed" by the new writers? Homer's half-brother Herb Powell. Hopefully DeVito has the sense to stay away if they ever remember that character.

They mentioned Herb in one of the later season episodes where Bart gets fat and has a heart attack. The episode itself had some good bits, but the Herb mention was when Homer was asking who else needed to lose weight, and pointed to a picture of "my seldom-seen half-brother Herb." I don't think he was ever referred to again.

"Uncie Herb" *shivers* was a shitty character anyway. I never watch his episodes, because of him. Even Devito's voice acting is awkward, but perhaps the shittiness of Herbs character reflects on the voice.

I don't know how you can hate unky Herb. And his episodes have some great jokes. "Powerfull like a gorilla, but soft and yeilding like a nerf ball." "This leash demeans us both." Etc.

Uhhh, Souldriver is a...brilliant man who has come up with many...well-thought-out, practical ideas, and is insuring the integrity of this thread. Oh, and his personal hygiene is beyond reproach.
 
Regardless on your opinion on Nostalgia Critic, whenever he does those opinion pieces (e.g. his top 11 stuff) he does them so well that even people who hate him tend to like those. With that said, it's his Top 11 Best Simpsons Episodes.

The only outlier in his review imo is Homer and the Bat (which is rather ignorable, imo). People also think he should've added You Online Move Twice, but meh, that episode is one of the overrated episodes I've seen.

I think I'm right in saying that the writers tried to get the character back a few seasons back, but DeVito refused to let the character be wrecked by a half-baked reappearance, and so wouldn't sign up.

I saw that one. God was it shitty. It's one of those newer episodes where I questioned why I was too lazy to change the damn channel.

It's actually Lisa's deadpan "We give up" that cracks me up.
 
My problem with that episode is this. How were the Simpson kids never baptized? They complain about going to church regularly, at least in some episodes.
