Where the fuck do you live that a 3d movie ticket costs $30, lol

Here in boston it's $14 and that includes the glasses.

Matinee 3D IMAX in Natick is like $8.75 Awwww yeahhhh. The perks of being attached to a damn furniture store.

Man I remember the thread when the trailer was leaked or something for this. You couldn't keep up. Sad to read some of the reviews here.
I'll probably see it sometime this weekend.

There's spoilers in that review, I had to stop reading it. I'd advise folks who want to go in fresh not to read it until afterwards. That said, the snippet above gives me hope. Ebert's tastes and thoughts usually match up with mine so my hopes are now much higher. zoukka and davis' posts also have me excited. Also, one reason Ebert is my favorite reviewer is that I find his reviews are enjoyable to read even when I completely disagree with him.

Yeah I saw Ebert's review and decided to read it after I saw the film. Many of his reviews are very plot descriptive.

Ebert is an asshole for that, for those who've seen Super(ellen page and dude from office), this is the first paragraph of his review

"Super" is being sold as a comedy, but I doubt it will play that way. It begins as the portrait of a lovable loser named Frank, and as it ends, we're pretty sure he's an insane ruthless killer. That's not a joke. Maybe writer-director James Gunn intended it as a joke, but after the camera lingers on the young heroine with a third of her face blown off, it's hard to laugh.

I nearly lost it when reading that review.

Will end up seeing this eventually but with the people I trust saying it's pretty much crap, I've lost all the immediate incentive to do so anytime soon. Blergh.

Seeing it at midnight in AVX 3D in Toronto.

I've never seen an Alien film in its entirety. I barely know anything about this film outside trailers. I think Gladiator and Blade Runner might be the only Ridley Scott films I've ever seen.

I'm doing it wrong, right?

Just such a sucker for midnight movie releases. Best theatre experiences ever. Crowd makes it so much better.

It's probably better that you haven't seen Alien before this. Will be better to watch afterward.

I'm about to go see this in IMAX 3D. I watched the Alien Anthology today to refresh myself on everything. I can't believe that my generation is getting its own Ridley Scott sci-fi film! Even though I'm excited I'm keeping the tepid response to the film in mind so I don't get overly disappointed if it doesn't click with me. But I hope I like the film as much as Roger Ebert did!

Sitting in IMAX seats to see it now. Cannot fucking wait!

Some guy brought a Macbook Air to play Diablo 3 while he waits for the movie to start. He tethered his cell phone for an internet connection.

He gave away the whole opening to the movie and almost spoiled the creatures for me, had to peace outta that browser tab fast. Opening sounds really cool though from what he described.

Can't believe so many of you were let down....did you forget The Phantom Menace?

Ridley Scott is old...can't sugar coat that. Artists get old, they lose it with age. Name one director who made his best work during his 70s...or even 60s.

Lucas, Spielberg, Scorsese, Coppola, Kurosawa, those are just directors...

now, composers: John Williams, Danny Elfman, Ennio Morrocone, James Horner, etc.

Clint Eastwood?

Clint Eastwood?

did he even start directing at a young age?

He did a fine job yeah, but when it comes to actors turned director, it's harder to judge since they normally start directing later in their career...except Mel Gibson, who is, IMO, one of the best actors turned directors.

Box Office reporting this movie is EXTREMELY front loaded with notfabio reporting 98% of presale tickets are for FRIDAY alone! midnights looking to be around the 5 million range. This could open HUGEEEEE especially Friday

I haven't bought tickets early... I plan to go on Saturday and buy tickets for the 5:00 show at noon. Supposedly they're reserved, so I hope not a ton of people have bought tickets and we wind up with crap seats.

well hopefully word of mouth isn't too bad...

Don't have to. You did in your own post. Spielberg is as consistent as ever.

Martin fucking Scorsese.

you...have got...to be joking.

Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas....all very recent, eh?

The Departed was pretty good, but it was 1. a remake and 2. nowhere near as good as his earlier works.

Don't you remember how people thought it was ridiculous that after all his great work in the 70s and 80s...he finally gets his first oscar for The Departed?

Not sure if serious...

Spielberg?? After that last Indiana Jones movie?

You seriously think Spielberg is as consistent in the past 10 years as he was in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s?

His 60s are composed of:

Gangs of New York
The Aviator
The Departed
Shutter Island
Hugo

Might not be his best decade but fuck me.

Choosing the wrong film, bro. The only film there that belongs in his greatest pantheon is The Aviator.

And Mamba - I have great love for both Jaws and Raiders, but neither are my favourite Berg films.

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull's pretty good. It's fun. Not... the best, but fun. Munich was really good.

None of those compare to his earlier work.

You are missing my point. Artists in the film industry have prime years...they may still make good films later on, but as they become more familiar with filming, they become less creative.

The Aviator and Shutter Island sucked, btw.

I think Sculli might die of a rage stroke in a minute.

Also, wasn't Scorcese's 'Hugo' beloved by critics?

Pretty sure Lucas was always shit.

THX1138, not a great movie by any means, but sure better than the SW prequels.

SW episode IV, nuff said.

But yeah, Lucas was never that great, but he sure as hell was a lot better in his younger years.

That's fine. Maybe it's Schindler's, Crusades, ET, JP, or SPR. All made before 60. Here's what he's done since he turned 60: Crystal Skull, Tin-Tin, War Horse. Only Tin-Tin is one you actually like, IIRC.

He's had good films this century (Munich, Catch Me) but none the quality of those I mentioned earlier or in this post, although maybe you'd argue for AI but even still he's not close to batting the average he did pre-2000 and certainly not pre-60 years old.

Yes.

Let's take a look, shall we?

1970s: Duel (Very good), The Sugarland Express (okay) JAWS (Great), Close Encounters (Very good), 1941 (terribad)

1980s: Raiders of the Lost Ark (Great), E.T (Great), Twilight Zone segement (shitty), Temple of Doom (okay), The Color Purple (mediocre), Empire of the Sun (Great), Last Crusade (very good), Always (shitty)

1990s: Hook (good, fuck the haters), Jurassic Park (Very good), Schindler's List (Great), The Lost World (mediocre), Amistad (mediocre), Saving Private Ryan (Great)

This century: A.I (Great), Minority Report (Very good), Catch Me If You Can (Very Good), The Terminal (mediocre), War of the Worlds (Good), Munich (GREAT), Crystal Skull (mediocre), War Horse (mediocre), Tintin (Very good)

Spielberg is easily the most consistent out of all the old timers.

Jaws, Close Encounters, Raiders, ET, Jurassic Park, and Schindler's List, and Saving Private Ryan trump everything afterwards. My point still stands. Directors tend to make their best films when they are young.

I predict that the Dark Knight Rises will pale in comparison to The Dark Knight.

AI is not great...god no.

But you do have a point...out of the old timers, Spielberg has held up better than most others.
