Targaryen nip slips are allowed, trust. And as for Rotten Tomatoes, that's legit only on the UK site, I'm just another critic on the American equivalent. No review from me though. Every critic in the world has the exact same opinion of the film.

I've seen people heavily warned for a lot less than what you have

This is 100% not true

Not really, considering it doesn't lead into Alien and instead sets up a sequel of it's own; I understand the point they were trying to make.

The Phantom Menace didn't lead into A New Hope and set up a sequel of its own, too. Prometheus is an Alien prequel. It takes place 30 years before Alien. It's set in the same universe. The exact same thing could be said about the SW prequels.

They can skip around it all they want, but it's ridiculous. If they wanted to make a standalone movie nobody was forcing them to put it in the same universe as Alien.

Phantom Menace was intended to be the first film in a trilogy of films that led up to A New Hope.

I don't think Prometheus is intended to be the first film in a trilogy that leads up to Alien.

And Prometheus was intended to be the first film of a few that lead into Alien. It's the same shit.

I mean, it does set up its own maybe separate sequel, but it also has that terribly stupid final shot that makes it seem to be more of a direct prequel. It's really weird, actually.

I think it sets up and gives some knowlege of how some bits of Alien came to be... but that doesn't mean the events of this movie directly impacted those of Alien. If that makes sense.

maybe this just comes down to semantics concerning the meaning of a "prequel." the movie I watched, to me, was deliberately a prequel to Alien. even Ridley Scott said that the movie ends without connecting to Alien, but that the next one would get us there or something-- just like the Star Wars prequels. it can have a self-contained story but the SW prequels also had self-contained stories too. what happens in TPM and even AOTC has zilch to do with what happens in ANH, for example.

I'm not sure using Star Wars as an example really gets us anywhere, but it does come down to semantics. The final shot of Prometheus has stuff that has definite clear connections to the original film. Before that I found it to be only tangentially related. But the connections at the end don't lead directly into Alien, they just imply what the path may be.

So it's not a prequel in that it leads directly into Alien, but it is one in that it definitely suggests a timeline of pertinent events that would lead to Alien.

Which I still think is different because we knew that would lead into further movies that would then lead into ANH, where Ridley's talk on Prometheus 2 doesn't convince me that it will lead directly into Alien.

Sure, but Prometheus planted the seeds for Alien and show us how more than a few things in Alien and Aliens came to be. That, to me at least, is enough for me to call it a prequel.

Doesn't matter what pre-release smokescreen they tried to use, this is an Alien prequel.
As the plot has no direct ties, it isn't a prequel.

"Set in the same universe and a little bit before" isn't what prequel means.

But you knew that already, Solo.

But it just muddles things because this isn't the same planet as the first movie, nor does this Alien even look like the ones from that movie.

Plus it totally blows the tone they were trying to convey at the end of the movie with Shaw leaving. Pretty horrible all around.

I think it DOES have direct ties. It would be different if the film had space jockeys, but didn't involve
xenos, face huggers or the corporation and their android's origins.
This felt like all the old peices, just being put into their starting positions.
I mean, really most prequels involve connections just as tenuous.

Can someone please post a few good Prometheus podcasts?

having direct ties or not does not a prequel make according to its definition. prometheus' story precedes alien, therefore it is a prequel. a loose prequel mind you, but a prequel nonetheless.

So Phantom Menace isn't a prequel then?

It is a prequel, it uses the same charachter, its very tied to what is to come (since this is set in motion in these movies)... Prometheus spoiler
there are to many questions unanswered so we can't say if the build up is for something else

It's definitely worth watching, but if you're not too bothered wait for a home release.

ok i might just do that... it's just that i am picking up negative vibes all over this thread here and i am not sure why, since the movie does have an IMDB score of 7.7 so it can't be truly bad i guess, maybe people are just disappointed because of Alien related prequel talk and expectations and what not...

Whatever you do... don't adjust your expectations based on what GAF says. GAF says Inception is the movie of forever.

I didn't say it WAS a remake. I said it was more a remake than a prequel. It's kind of like last year's incarnation of The Thing.

It's funny because last time we chatted you insisted that it wad a clear as a day prequel to Alien. It's not even remotely close to a movie remake.

It is a prequel to me. You know it's going to lead into another film that sets up Alien.

Alas, what I have really been saying is as clear as day is that it's an Alien movie, despite all the bullshitting Scott and Lindelof spun.

Prometheus is basically...

One undeniably leads to Alien while the other to Prometheus sequel.

Not even close to being a prequel or a remake. Phantom menace had some same characters leading up to the originals, Prometheus has none. Prometheus is much more like a spin-off and focuses on the space jockey and much less on the xenos.
Agree with the picture above.

The Assassination of Jesse James has better cinematography than any movie Ridley has ever made.

Come on man. Alien and Blade Runner are fucking gorgeous to look at. Like 'hold your breath' beautiful.

I'm kind of concerned that this is going to end up being the death-knell for tentpole R-rated horror films.

Word of mouth can't be very good at this point, and I don't see this one having much in the way of legs. If Lindelof had put down the pipe and written a good script, or if Scott had realized that the story needed massive improvements, maybe we'd have a good film, word of mouth would kick ass, and the film would do gang-busters at the box office.

Instead, we'll probably never get another R-rated film like this again.

Thanks a lot, Ridley and Damon.

The earnings are very repectable. Sure, it didn't quite reach the levels some had been expecting, but it will be a financial success.

I think it will do fine, but a sequel probably won't. The first film in a new franchise, which this is, has to be really strong to make a second movie viable. I'm not sure if people really liked this movie enough to see a follow-up.

I don't think the movie will put people off R-rated scifi-horror though. I think it's pretty much agreed that those parts were the most entertaining in the movie.

I mean, 'Legend' is legitimately one of the most awful films ever made, but visually it's incredible.

I don't get Solo sometimes. But then I don't get Sculli sometimes. And Jett. And they probably don't get me a lot either. This difference of opinion thing is tragic.

Finally got round to watching it.

Loved it.

I was really entertained. Thank fuck I didn't watch the trailers though, that 3 minute one gives so much away! I don't care about the plot holes, I really enjoyed the film and really enjoyed the 3d. Saying this as someone who was a huge Alien & Aliens fan growing up.
