was waiting for the Mcelroy defense force to show up. if Segata was here, he'd want you guys to remember the time this clown "reviewed" Nier for Joystiq, couldn't follow a mini-map and bombed it. when he got called on it, he showed up over here to defend it, and when that failed? he cried "im too busy for this" then went on a podcast mocking GAF for, you know, pushing him to do his job as if he were a professional or something.

so yeah, there's even more context for you over why he's salty here. and wow @ that twitter exchange, too.

In all honesty.. that document that was "leaked" is pretty spot on with what Microsoft seemingly wants to do. They want a living room box, and it shows it. Whether or not it actually is from Microsoft is a key detail, but in the end, in my opinion, it shows what Microsoft has been striving to achieve in the past several years.

So in the end... we've got two things...

Someone who's clearly a cry baby.
Someone who is throwing around baseless accusations...

Look man, some things are always going to be incredibly difficult to joke about, and so should be left alone out of respect 99.9% of the time. Things like murder, rape and such should be left alone. And doubly so on a goddamn video-game news blog.

McElroy isn't an clever, edgy stand-up comic. He's a news blogger covering the games industry and should act as such.

Totally. I think he works because they can just leave "news" to him and the rest of the staff can focus on the other things they do. He may be goofy, and I disagree with him quite a bit, but he does take the games journalism thing seriously. He properly sources and follows up on what he writes. Probably the result of that journalism degree.

What we are sorely missing is Shawn Elliott still writing about games to take the piss out of games journalism. I really miss his rants and calling out all the games press bullshit.

That's entirely beside the point. The context of a podcast is different, like with a stand-up show. You go in knowing it's going to be satirical to begin with. It's not like pursuing a gaming blog and getting murder jokes along with your news.

I dunno maybe that's why Twitter underwent a redesign last year to make it more accessible? Some people don't spend a lot of time there, so if they're forced to look it gets a little overwhelming.

I see your point, but I also want entertainment from video game sites I visit. Which is why I follow Giant Bomb. It's also why I can't stand Arthur Gies.

I can see how people would consider it offensive (I don't), but just wanted to point out that he's a funny guy and should be able to be creative in whatever way he'd like.

If he had succeeded in being funny, it would have been fine IMO. But, he tried to make what should have been a simple punch line joke into an entire blog post that fell flat. When you go all out on a joke like that, and fail, it's just painful.

His Sherlock Holmes bit from the E3 Bombcast some years ago was his greatest moment for me.

MBMBAM is hit or miss. Everything starts out super funny but then it always devolves into mediocre penis jokes.

But yeah, I think he's pretty funny, I had no idea he was a journalist until today.
 
Well, he's right: GAF isn't a certified news site. That document is a "rumor" at most, and unless MS confirms it (fat chance) it's always going to be a rumor. "Journalists" (hah) jumping on that instead of doing a little digging and calling MS for confirmation before posting it up with a HUGE "please take with a grain of salt" sign is just asking for the typical "LOL GAME JOURNALISM LOL" response from GAF.

But as for "fake"-ing stuff, outside of the MGS "triology," I don't think GAF's ever purposely posted fake things for the blogs to pick up on. That's generally 4chan's department.

What's amazing about Triology is that it got called out literally two posts later and was picked up anyway. It still stuns me that someone can see a post by a guy named "RanoNL" without a link and think "Well that's good enough for me".

No one should use a collective "GAF" because such a thing does not exist, but if you must you can't say GAF is actively trying to trick people but conveniently leave out that GAF is actively pointing out false information and banning sites that distribute that information.
 
I don't get the hate for Tricky. Guy has a passion for what he does and he does it damn well. His writing is excellent and he does his best to fact check and properly source his work. You can't ask for more than that, especially given how shitty video game journalism is. He's a credit to his work and an asset to giant bomb.
 
It's kind of funny. Once in awhile someone will post something on GAF that's a pile of BS. But within a few posts, we're able to see clearly through the nonsense. And while that's all happening, someone whose job it is to report the news, someone who makes a living doing so, starts running with it.

Is anyone else annoyed at sites that post "rumors" generated on message boards without original reporting? Just because you put "RUMOR" on the headline shouldn't give you carte blanche to post click-inducing fantasy stories. Do your own reporting if you are going to put something on your site. The Verge or Polygon, are in a position of authority because what they say has a much greater impact on the public.
They are a news organization in gaming. IGN and other sites irresponsibly use the platform they are given to write asinine stories that are only written to drive page views. This is why traditional journalism is dying. People no longer see value in well-researched articles, the money is in vomiting out the most enticing things onto word in the shortest amount of time to stay current. It's better to report false news than miss out on a story. There is no value in journalism, it is why anyone can do what Polygon or IGN does. They are only concerned with drawing you in. They don't give a shit if you learn something meaningful from their stories.

This is what I was saying earlier in the thread. It's just lazy.

In the time this Polygon guy read the Powerpoint and blurted it out in different words, he could have picked up the phone and done some proper investigating.

But why put effort in to something when you'll get thousands of clicks from unfounded speculation.

Almost every thread of 'rumours' has a first page full of posters calling 'FAKE!'. It always seems to me that a lot of Gaffer's are cynical by nature and are happier crying 'Fake' than believing in the rumour and, in general, take a lot of convincing when it comes to unconfirmed leaks and such.

To be fair, the "report" on the Microsoft leak/fake whatever wasn't done by Justin (or Polygon it seems). It's on the base Verge site.
 
Ever since I found @NeoGAFNewThread (I'm pretty sure I'm one of the first people to find this twitter account), I've been monitoring who's following it either cause it's hilarious or just interesting to see what gaming industry folks are looking at NeoGAF. This Twitter account has basically changed the way I look at GAF since I don't need to constantly refresh for threads. One night, I found consecutive followers from Polygon following it. All at once. I think EVERYONE from Polygon follows this account.

Also, that Harmonix 2+ 'AAA' IP story thread I made yesterday? I believe I was the first one to post it on the Internets. Guess which site posted it after I made the thread? Yup, you guessed it. And the source info (Harmonix's podcast) was posted hours before I even made the thread.

So what am I saying? I don't know...don't blame us for everything or something
 
gaf is a forum, the fact "the press" use it as a means to gather information shows just how baseless and unprofessional gaming journalism is. Gaf is not, nor should be, a place for people who get paid to do research, to take information from freely. Use it as a starting grounds, but don't make rash and baseless articles off of the crap that gets posted on it.
 
This thread taught me that the guy too obtuse to follow an X on a mini-map in Nier is the Skyrim Dancing Gif Guy.

How the hell did he find anything in Skyrim?

(Also, instead of being pissy about the occasional fake story leaking through, dude could be grateful that GAF aggregates news stories so he doesn't have to. Since apparently a message board with thousands of posters counts as a monolithic source.)
 
This kind of stuff from gaming press is just embarrassing really. For bountiful reasons that I'm shocked they're not aware of.

It's on there, but it lacks the "/gaming" thing that the other articles on Polygon have, so it seems like it didn't originate on Polygon.

Not to say you were suggesting it did, and I'm guessing most people reading this have already figure this out, but I've never visited The Verge or Polygon so I'm parsing out their site layout as I go :lol was a little confused.

Basically Justin's new site (Polygon/Vox Games) posted the 56 page "Microsoft" document, Patrick questioned the logic of doing this, and Justin complained at Patrick saying that journalists should stick together and not question each other because GAF does that enough already.

He should resign immediately if that's his actual opinion. HE is the writer, it's HIS job to fact check before he reports on something. Whether "Neogaf" (apparently one single entity") was trying to "mislead" him or not is completely irrelevant. What a joke.
