I think it's a very bold and clever move, one product that allows them to fight a war on two fronts.

consumers don't care about processors. There are inexpensive 7" android tablets on the market now. There are also 7" tablets from Amazon and B&N.
The person looking at a $200 7" android tablet isn't the same person looking at a $500+ 10' tablet that runs MS office...
They're hot garbage when held in portrait.
Will have to see how practical it actually is though. You need a proper table or something to rest the thing on, so in most case where i use tablets now, the keyboard wouldn't work that well. Not sure if the kickstand is worth losing space for more battery either. I can't imagine these things haven't been considered by Apple, but you know they would never adopt them because that's not Johnathan Ive I guess.
The iPad isn't 16:9 so it's wrong

If the price, quality and battery life are good, I'd drop my ipad3.
I've tried to really find ways to make the ipad my goto work device but it just doesn't cut it. This seems to get me there.
The cover = keyboard is brilliant. Nice work MS.
I hope MS do more core hardware products and not just turn their product into an OEM mess like Android. So happy I stayed away from that platform.

I've been waiting for a tablet to come along and merge the traditional tablet with a laptop. Particularly as far as OS and legacy programs go.
I missed most of this announcement and quick reading through the OP and the last few pages has left me with questions. Will the Win 8 version work with Steam?
Or am I still pipe-dreaming?

If you have an Intel or AMD system like the Pro then yes. Nope for ARM like the basic one.

Windows RT and 8 Pro software aren't finished yet. That could very well be why there is no info on battery life.

I'm not interested in the ARM version (I already have a tablet) and when I think about it, if the Pro version is $1000+, I'd rather get a Macbook Air or a Windows Ultrabook. I'm still impressed with what they showed. It's a slick looking device.

MS typically never lives up to the hype, but damn if this didn't impress. It's hard to be innovative with a tablet, being that it's a tablet.. but they did it.

No, it seems like the Pro version is full desktop Win 8 and all that entails. So yeah, steam. And a USB port for your 360 controller? Theoretically?

Caught up reading live streams, so I'm not sure of all the facts as that's all I read.
USB 2.0 is kind of a loser for a 2012 product though. Pretty lame there.
Built-in kickstand is also pretty tacky, but the device still manages to look fairly slick.
The cover/keyboard looks pretty interesting though (highlight of the show). I'd like to fool around with that.

The ancient, at this point, Lenovo X201 tablet got about 6 hours of battery life with the last-gen Core i7. The Intel-powered Surface should be fine.

Nope, totally got it. But it needed a flagship hardware component to realize the promise of the idea and now it (theoretically) has it.

Wow. MS pulled an amazing hat-trick. This is basically a Win 8 touchscreen Ultrabook. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but they've convinced people to pay a premium for something that's already out.
Keyboard was cool, sure. I dig that Adobe was part of the presentation which means they're definitely unified in their hatred for Apple. However, what I want to know is:
1. What is the environment like? Is it a closed system like apple? I dig how i don't even have to THINK about viruses and the like with iPad. Surface? Who knows?
2. What's MS's answer to the apple store?
3. What's the integration with Xbox Live?
4. Can we see examples of how the touch screen works with drawing? That's an area that apple severely lacks in. IF this is a an alternative to those expensive monitors that artists use, then this becomes very interesting.
5. How will the device manage media? If i use the VERY AWESOME USB 2.0 input for an external drive, is it as simple as drag-n-drop? Could be cool, I guess, but this goes back to my first concern about the eco-system...
Anyway...watching with an open mind. At least this doesn't feel like an IPAD knockoff....
