Microsoft Surface Tablet announced

This is also why no Xbox branding. They're not just aiming for casual users, they want the business users as well.
If this takes off I half expect an Xbox line however, which stresses parts for gaming rather than just business or casual use. That could actually do good things for both tablet and PC games, but we'll see where that goes.

So.... with MS fucking over all it's hardware partners with this, Google promising with all it's heart that Motorola devices WON'T be getting an advantage *lol* it seems like the Dell/HP/Samsung/HTCs of the world get tossed aside.
Let's not pretend like those companies are makin products worth our time and money in the first place...

"I FUCK ON THE FIRST DATE"

The Verge guys say MS is only showing the RT version and apparently the RT version ships first.

Maybe I am projecting based on my own tastes but in order of priority the pro seems a far bigger game changer than RT.

What am I missing?

People who didn't like or care for the announcement can pick one single specific detail and says how they're still behind the competition.

What's the point? Nitpick all you want, when was the last time there was a fully supported software and hardware implementation of a tablet + desktop device? Oh, this is a niche product and people won't buy things at prices more expensive than iPad? Who the fuck cares. This is cool and useful to a lot of people. Other OEMs are already making similar devices? Well there are a lot of OEMs making similar Android devices to iPad don't they? Aside from one or two they don't even match up hardware wise and the software is definitely not up to par. So when there is finally a worthwhile alternative to the iPad, all you can care is the resolution not being equal when we have been used to it all these years? Seriously? Damn you.

Don't worry about it. Fuck 'em.

Trolls are trolls.

Right off the bat:

- Full version of Windows8
- Core i5 Ivy Bridge
- USB 3.0
- Tablet or desktop, you choose the form factor
- Digitizer, stylus compatible
- Thinner than an iPad, even with a built in kick stand
- Keyboard cover
- Larger screen than iPad, at full HD (what's the use of having an infinity x infinity resolution screen if source material maxes out at 1080p?)
- Competetively priced to arm/ultras
- Gorrila glass 2

It's a great piece of hardware and M$ knocked it out of the park tonight. I'm excited for it, so should you be.

Until I hear the specs I will be reserved, but from everything they showed this is how a tablet should be. Not like an iPad.

you mean the pro model that will likely cost around a grand and have sub 6 hour battery life?

because the RT model is pretty much exactly like an iPad.

MS knows the pro model is not a big deal for most people looking for a 10” tablet. it’s a well made but niche device for people who need to run desktop apps and have a stylus. it’s not going to post big numbers so they’re gonna lead off with the direct ipad competitor.

Any indication on when we're gonna get price? Availability? Battery life info? Future event? Random press release in the future? Or is this a pre-empt google thing and they weren't fully ready, considering windows 8 won't be out for a couple months.

Welp, I'm impressed...now I'm not sure if I should get this or an iPad 3. I honestly didn't think MS would go this route, especially since this will surely make their hardware manufacturing partners rather upset.

Any word on an SDK for this?

The only thing that wold make it a bit nicer is something other than Intel integrated graphics.

If digital ink is pro only...lol

Thats pro only specs right.

Reading text is the answer to to the underlined part.smh lol

Surface looks pretty cool, and is nothing like an iPad, so that's a win of sorts. The cover-keyboard is really neat.

This has business application written all over it. Exactly what I was waiting for. Thank you Microsoft.

The Pro model does, it looks great.

I think people are underestimating the RT model. I saw someone say earlier in the thread that people know their way around their existing Windows programs and that the RT model won't be supporting those legacy Windows programs, but bundling Office with the RT model is a shrewd move. Casual computing these days is all about basic utility and using a computer as a lifestyle companion. This thing has the form factor, the looks and the connectivity right (USB3.0, HDMI etc)... If people can do their browsing on it, rewrite their CV in an easy and familiar way, and pour countless hours into touch screen apps and Facebook -- it has the potential to be hugely popular. Get the price right on the RT model and support it with popular Windows applications, and we have a goer.

I can see MS would start a game streaming service, doesn't require powerful hardware but you need a decent internet connection. Works well within their plans in pushing the live marketplace.

So MS charges $60 a year for Xbox Live.. which basically is just a matchmaking / chat / online store... meaning, each user is taking up as much horsepower on their servers as your average Neo-GAFer is browsing this site...

And you think a cloud gaming service, where each individual user needs hardware power exponentially greater than that same person does using Xbox Live, and said hardware needs to be geographically closer since cloud gaming is HIGHLY latency dependent...

Somehow fits into their plans?

Well can the RT version turn into a full computer with desktop mode? If so then it still beats the iPad in utility.

You're mixing specs. The Pro version is 13.5mm thick. The point of high DPI is for extremely sharp text and interface elements. Hoping you were just joking on that point…

They will care in the showroom, and it is relevant that they care.

Whether they care is not relevant to a man on the street test to see if they can discern the difference.

If I had any doubts that Apple fanboys are threatened, tobor constantly harping on retina like anyone gives a shit is a sure sign that MS did something right. 1080p on a 10 inch screen isn't good enough now, yeah, ok.

Edit: giga and chinn are here too? And LKBAP? Perfect.

It'll be interesting to see where these companies are 5-10 years from now. At least half of those will try to come out with OS's of their own.

Fary Cry 2 was what, below 720p or under on Xbox 360 at 30fps? Not bad. Call of Duty runs at what, 540p or something? Play it at that resolution I wonder what fps you get.

yea, probably better fps than some Xbox 360 games at the same resolution. absolutely.

I would not be surprised of CoD ran at 40-50fps on 4000 graphics, but I haven't looked any numbers up. I'm sure they're readily available since the hardware has been out for some time.

I do wonder about temperatures, though. People complained about the little bit of heat the iPad3 generates when gaming...how much more a Core i5 trying to run Call of Duty? :D

Microsoft has totally confused consumers this thread is clear.

There are 2 version and one is missing a lot of the features. I think this was on purpose.\

Also im still dying at that 1080p source material comment. LOL.

"infinity x infinity" LOL

1080P is fine. I've been talking about the RT model. I know it's hard to keep up.

If the battery life was good, wouldn't they have mentioned it?
That could have been a massive cherry on top. It's probably not great.

Looks pretty nice though. The keyboard thing is a really interesting idea.

I don't know the RT model is the one designed to compete with the iPad so I'd say it's more important. The specs for the pro make it seem sexy but in all likelyhood it will be expensive and have poor battery life, plus its thicker and heavier.

Alright, so between 1 and 10, how mad are the OEMs at Microsoft right now. I give them a solid 8.5

Fuck the OEMs. They're satisfied with slopping out mediocre junk, because that's what sustains them on the PC side of things. The desktop/laptop landscape is a vast, underwhelming landscape of bleh.

If Microsoft wants to make a name for Windows 8, they had no choice but to take it into their own hands.

Well can the RT version turn into a full computer with desktop mode? If so then it still beats the iPad in utility.

It has a desktop but only MS programs run on it. Comes with Office Home and Student. I assume email duties are being left to the Metro App.

This is the same nonsense shit people said about the Xoom and tons of other "me too" tablets. Apple fans aren't threatened they are just coming for a laugh.

I don't see why anyone would bother getting anything BUT the intel version. The thing is a game changer.
Because not everyone has a use for it? The features are great and all, but if I'm only using this to check internet, write notes, read, watch some movies and doodle, why do I need all of that?

Seriously the pro looks cool but with no mention of battery life or price there is no telling if its worth it.

I'm gonna let you in on a little secret here. Apple always covers their tracks when it comes to these things. They nearly always offers compensation for it.

Xerox was offered a great deal to invest into the company.

Delicious Library Interface creator was hired by Apple in 2005.

CoverFlow was bought in 2006.

As for Konfabulator... Well I'm not gonna alarm you but the idea for that was made by Apple... in 1984

No thats pretty much it. From what I gather there aren't many reasons to get an RT over an iPad. But if they can get that Pro model out the door for 999 or less it's gonna look prettay prettay sweet next to that Vizio ultra book or even a MacBook Air.

This "convertible" laptop form factor has been around over a decade but this is the first time Ive seen it actually make sense after making its transition from concept to reality.
