Microsoft Surface Tablet announced

It will likely be fine for 95% of the PC games out there. No, it won't run Skyrim or Mass Effect 3 at anything more than 5 fps (if that), but those games are the tiny minority of the PC gaming landscape.
you can run ME3 on low on a HD3000, but it's not a particularly demanding game.

You shouldn't have said this. Never tout the MS store as something Microsoft does well. It was a desperation move if anything. Most people know nothing about them.
Best Buy is a horrible retail experience, i'm glad Microsoft is following Apple in this.

i'd say the ARM tablets will get something like 10+ and the x86 ones will get something like 5+

I'd rather not go with the ARM model. I am in the market for a true x86 pc. If the Pro doesn't get 6-8 hours I would probably just go with on of lenovos thinkpad ultrabooks. Might as well get a full PC, if the tablet performs like a PC.

can Microsoft absorb some of the costs and sell them at a loss for however long they need to? or does the X-box drag them down and prevent them from adopting a similar model?

I'm sure Microsoft could afford to sell this hardware at a loss, but they have to be very careful as I think it'd almost certainly open them up to lawsuits from the OEM's.

This mythical consumer of yours just paid about twice as much for the pro version of the tablet yet doesn't know they can use their existing Office license or buy a cheap one online?

Do you guys actually read what you type? Come on man, dont make the trolling so obvious.
You don't understand consumers. Same people who buy 1080p televisions and have SD Comcast cable and composite cables hooked to there theater system.

People don't know. We know. Most don't.

One thing I'm surprised wasn't talked about more was Xbox integration. Obviously there's smart glass, but I can see this being used for a whole lot more gaming applications.

Remember back in the day when everyone was insane over a Microsoft handheld? Well kids...this is it.

Why would non-touchscreen windows 8 users, which will be the vast majority of the userbase, care or pay for apps designed for the metro mode that they universally hate (on a non-touchscreen device) or straight up can not use due to not having a touchscreen?

Yeah, we'll have to really see how useful, or.. annoying Metro UI is on desktop PCs.

Or, why would developers give 30% of their cut to MS, if they can just sell the app on their website the same way they have been doing for years, and they would be usable on Windows 8 as always?

BUT

If it does catch on.

Developers will be thrilled for another potential revenue source with the built in marketing and search exposure an App Store provides.

Those who whine about royalty fee cuts are in the vast minority. It's basically a software publishing service, and being able to keep 70% of your sales is a very modern publishing concept.. it's usually the other way around.

The more I look at that keyboard cover in action the more I think Apple's lawyers are surely suiting up as we speak. The iPad Smart Cover has got to be patented to shit.

But doesn't the keyboard aspect of it represent a substantial divergence? I see what you're saying, because you're right. There are significant similarities, but enough to trump differences to make a patent case?

Considering this was the launch, I can understand them not mentioning to much. Expect more of it in the near future.

But yeah. Listening about smart glass during E3 bored the hell out of me. If it had been after the announcement of this tablet, I'd have paid WAY more attention, which I am now.

But this is just a tablet running windows.
Those already exist.

Where could one possibly go to get their hands on Microsoft hardware? Too bad they have no retail relationships built up. So boned. Mom would never shop for Xmas at Target, Wal Mart, Best Buy........

already said, but yes...Best Buy is probably it. Dunno if they're going to do the presentation right or not. I almost feel like MS should hire their own reps and send them to these stores to speak on behalf of the product...

...because Best Buy is sure to fuck it up.

Well shit, If microsoft continues to push these awesome sorts of devices I may get a 720 over a PS4. Wait what am a saying, I shouldn't go crazy just yet...

I never touted anything. I just stated a fact. Just like ( you pretend) you've been doing in this thread all night.

As far as I know, they've just recently premiered the stores outside of their own local area in Redmond. I dont get wrapped into corporate allegiances the way you do so forgive me if my facts are wrong. Just last month they were hosting a concert here for the opening of the store which is the only reason I even know it exists.

I'm no patent expert but I don't think they look at the product as a whole, rather specific aspects of it like the way the hinges clip on or the way the magnet wakes the computer when it opens. Maybe someone here who knows more about patents can tell us.

Seems like small potatoes in the grand scheme of things to go to court over between year two companies. Especially since these are keyboards. It seems that it would boil down to "you can't use magnets too!"

My corporate allegiance seeing as i own 2 windows desktops, a touchpad, an ipad and a mbp.

Have owned 2 android phones too.(htc hero, evo 4g)

quit bullshitting

I love technology. Don't care which brand it is.

If the price is right I will buy a pro.

that's just simply incorrect. 100% incorrect.

please look up some HD4000 benchmarks before commenting further and spreading more FUD.

thread moves a bit fast. i dont know if anyone answerd already, can this play SC2? or is it closed off to xbla games or whatever.
yes, it can play SC2.

Honestly, there's no trolling. Look at the discussion I was having. It was about choosing between RT and Pro and consumer confusion. At least in my mind, I think there's a big value proposition to getting MS Office for free. And I think that value proposition is the MSRP price of MS Office. When Sony bundles games with Vita/PS3, or when Apple used to bundle iLife when iLife used to cost much more, it's the same thing they're trying to do, create a value proposition worth the MSRP of the software being bundled, even if it's not really worth that much in actuality.

It's a strategy that works, which is why companies keep doing it. If it only affected "mythical consumers," they'd stop doing it because it doesn't work.

lol, yeah, that would cause a shitstorm of patent infringement claims across their entire portfolios. I think there is some sort of gentlemen's agreement between the two.

Is that a MagSafe connector?

No, but it is a connector that MS filed a patent for. Similar to MagSafe, but for both data and power.

Small potaoes keep the lawyers in Beamers.

They'll probably sue over two dozen aspects of this device, just as they do over every new touchscreen. Then Microsoft will dig through their patents and countersue, then the whole thing will get settled.

If we're talking the Pro, its not closed off at all. All a question of graphical horsepower, and given some of the calculations I've seen in here, its suggesting that use, it can run SC2.

Now the RT version (lite version if you will), not so sure. I think it can, horsepower wise, but it does not have the open environment that the Pro has.

nVidiot_Whore said:
Wait.. Office is bundled?

From what I understand, yes for the RT, but an RT version of it.

For the Pro, not sure, but likely no. BUT, it can run the full version of it.

For further insight on HD4000 graphics:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5771/the-intel-ivy-bridge-core-i7-3770k-review/8

Please review that Anandtech article. It will help cut down on the ignorance. Games reviewed include:

-Crysis: Warhead
-Metro 2033
-Dirt 3
-Total War - Shogun 2
-Battlefield 3
-Portal 2
-StarCraft II
-Minecraft
-Civ 5

Yes, this will be a weaker processor in this tablet overall, but you should be able to extract some ballpark figures on what HD4000 graphics can do.

(assuming minimal downclocks, of course)

Wait.. Office is bundled?

Or is that a confusing side discussion?
Office is bundled with the RT version. Extra for the Pro version.

So.... with MS fucking over all it's hardware partners with this, Google promising with all it's heart that Motorola devices WON'T be getting an advantage *lol* it seems like the Dell/HP/Samsung/HTCs of the world get tossed aside.

They kind of deserve it. For the most part they've failed to deliver.

If you don't hate apple you are an apple fanboy.

If you question any other company then you are an apple fanboy.

Cut the damn crap guys.

It's fucking annoying.

You can like Apple and other devices too. Shit is so tiring.

You don't understand consumers. Same people who buy 1080p televisions and have SD Comcast cable and composite cables hooked to there theater system.

People don't know. We know. Most don't.

What do they need to know? One is about twice the price, you're not accidentally buying the pro version dude. These aren't impulse buys, these aren't televisions, if someone is skipping out on the winrt version AND and iPad for a pro, surely they are aware that all
their old software will work?

I'll grant you the inverse, where consumers don't know the winrt version doesn't play their old software, but there aren't a lot of consumers splurging for a $1000 pro version without knowing why they are paying that much for a tablet. There has never been a mainstream market for tablets priced that high, there may never be one.

Aside from having their own retail stores, MS has really continued to ramp up their retail partnerships, offering training and other representation.

But I do not know if they've ever gone as far as had reps in stores. Or if MS really could ever pull that off on a large scale. That's a lot of stores to cover.. and they'd just have to hire people and train them. Could produce a whole shit-ton of not that knowledgeable cheese-ball ass mofos to hang out in Best Buys.

The more I think about the fact that is only generation one the more awestruck I am. The intel version specifically. It makes sooooo much more sense than a laptop.

Apple was granted patents for the Smart Cover just a few months ago. I think they'll let it slide though and just copy it for iPad 4.

I can totally see Apple going up on stage with a slide saying "The iPad Smart Cover just got smarter" or something similar.

HEY, IT WORKED!

Apple and Microsoft have a cross-licensing agreement and they never sue each other ever since Bill Gates put his mug up on WWDC. They pony up cash together in buying up patents and are the major backers behind the Rockstar group, which sues others for patents Microsoft and Apple jointly own.
