If you don't hate apple you are an apple fanboy.

If you question any other company then you are an apple fanboy.

Cut the damn crap guys.

Microsoft can be just as bad with their business practices, the difference is I actually like windows as opposed to that atrocious iOS and OS X. Now Microsoft is showing an even stronger product design than apple could ever wish for. It's Insanity!

Im really surprised they never used some retarded pun like

"and this is just scratching the SURFACE..." after first revealing it

Please review that Anandtech article. It will help cut down on the ignorance. Games reviewed include:

-Crysis: Warhead
-Metro 2033
-Dirt 3
-Total War - Shogun 2
-Battlefield 3
-Portal 2
-StarCraft II
-Minecraft
-Civ 5

Yes, this will be a weaker processor in this tablet overall, but you should be able to extract some ballpark figures on what HD4000 graphics can do.

That's not bad at all for a tablet. I'd be fine with just getting ScummVM going without having to jailbreak or something. :-P

It's fucking annoying.

You can like Apple and other devices too. Shit is so tiring.
Not blaming you as part of the problem, but you have to realize Apple fans did this to themselves as an aggregate.

Aside from having their own retail stores, MS has really continued to ramp up their retail partnerships, offering training and other representation.

But I do not know if they've ever gone as far as had reps in stores. Or if MS really could ever pull that off on a large scale. That's a lot of stores to cover.. and they'd just have to hire people and train them. Could produce a whole shit-ton of not that knowledgeable cheese-ball ass mofos to hang out in Best Buys.

Yea, I agree. I just worry that your average Best Buy salesperson is going to fail to clarify what the product is and sell it. Then again, I'd have a hard time selling the RT with a straight face.

This is the type of shit im talking about.

I'm still finding it a possibility. Touting your device as a tablet and attaching a $1000+ tag to it isn't gonna do you any favors.
If the price was that low it would have been at the end of the talk today.

that's just simply incorrect. 100% incorrect.

please look up some HD4000 benchmarks before commenting further and spreading more FUD.

So it will be play even more PC games than approximately 95% of them? Good. My point was this is a great gaming device in that it can play thousands of PC games (and emulators) right out of the box. If it can hold its own with recent high end games as well, all the better.

Office is bundled with the RT version. Extra for the Pro version.

But is this some special MetroUI version of Office?

That "news" about ARM running "only Office and IE" confuses me.. so MS bothered to completely re-code the entire Office Suite from the ground up for ARM, and then..

.. are giving it away?

Or is this some special ARM only MetroUI version?

Holy shit, we've got some grade A fanboyism going on in this thread. Reminds me of the golden age of middle school console fanboyism politic.

*gets popcorn*

I think they will be marketed slightly differently, the RT model as a tablet and the Pro as a full-on PC that happens to have the benefit of tablet form factor.

This look nice but it looks expensive. Microsoft is not a premium brand and if they try and price this like they are it will fail in a world of ipads and $200 Android tablets.

This needs to come in at $399 and not a penny higher.

Sure as hell looks like a premium product though.

Some of you all should take a ban bet on those price points. Yall cray.

I'm not going out on that limb but seriously you are pulling prices out of your ass.

This is brand new technology that shows really well. They are going to price it as such. I don't blame them.

But they're near identical in appearance. I still say that would be hard to pull off. There needs to be some proximity in pricing to push customers to move up the ladder.

This is how i think its going to shake down

Surface RT

$500 Wifi 32 gig
$600 Wifi 64 gig
$625 LTE 32 gig
$700 LTE 64 gig

Surface Pro
$700 64gig dual core low end i5
$800 64 gig dual core low end i5
$900 128 gig dual core low end i5
$1k 128 gig dual core mid range i5
$1.2k 256 gig with quad core i5.

You guys have to remember they said 3 months after windows 8 launch for the Pro intel will be on a whole new set of chips if not a new micron process .

The samsung people posted will be over a year old at that point .

In fact i expect the 64 gig verison of the pro and the 32 gig verison of the RT to go away by the time these ship.

Remember there will be other Windows 8 tablets on the market when these come out. They wont be able to price them insanly high and ultrabooks are already at the $700-$800 price point , flash foward half a year from now and this at $700 wont sound silly

^ you think they're going to release NINE tablet models?

wat.

No, it's a real version of Office they made especially for ARM. They've been pimping it for several months now. They showed it off when they first announced Windows for ARM, iirc.

it's fully-featured Office on the normal Windows desktop. It doesn't use Metro at all (unless things have changed since I last looked).

These products are nice but they don't exist in a vacuum and if MS doesn't make them price-competitive with the iPad and MacBook Air they will get crushed.

It's really fucking impressive. I'm definitely considering giving up my iPad in favor of it because most of my software is universal. The keyboard cover.. it's just brilliant. One of the most impressive things I've ever seen in the tech space.

It's absolutely a guessing game at this point. My wild speculation does no harm.

(assuming minimal downclocks, of course)
While its noble what you are preaching (cutting down the ignorance), you yourself seemed to one of the ignorant ones.

The ULV Ivy Bridge GPU base clocks are almost half of the desktop variants, its not MINIMAL downclocks. Performance takes a significant hit too;

And here is the correct link; http://www.anandtech.com/show/5872/intel-dual-core-ivy-bridge-launch-and-ultrabook-review/5

For the record, I'm not downplaying Ivy Bridge's GPU performance. Just trying to reign in expectations before people start believing in desktop numbers for ULV processors.

yeah it uses the desktop. there is a touch mode for it where it spreads everything out though.

Pretty much the only way to look at it.

$900-$1200 is my guess range for the Pro models. Not a penny less. If these puppies were going to be $700 or less, they would have had that shit on a scrolling marquee encrusted in diamonds.

let it be said that I fought the good fight. I stand quite corrected. :(

back to Bastion, Limbo and Half-Life 2 it is. lol

This. I'm comparing against the market. Sure, the Pro is aimed more at the Ultrabooks, but the comparisons against the iPad will still be made. If they put this at $1200, its going to get very little traction.

This is the type of shit im talking about.
lol

I'm not saying the reactions are typically deserved, but there isn't any great debate to say that Apple has a lot more fanboys than PC ... and that with many of them their fervency is quite similar to what you see with console fanboys.

Because of that, the reality is many react in a shitty way. It's not always deserved, but I think it's pretty easy to see why it happens.

I said Apple fanboys, not Apple fans

They ruined it for everyone.

Why? He is absolutely part of the problem.
hahahahaha

I also think it doesn't come with the stylus and any cover. Those are extra for sure. They aren't going to eat that profit.

No, I think that's too low. My argument is that anything over $999, the price of the entry-level MBA, is a problem. I think $899-999 is likely. But what the fuck do I know.
I'd buy this. Companies overprice things all the time though. Look at those android tablets. Maybe MS has learned from the past.

As of now my biggest fear is that cover/keyboard. It's flexible right? If so its not going to serve me too well if I want to type on my lap or in bed.

man this looks fantastic. Too bad i was too busy at work today. Downloading the release candidate, too bad our new laptops aren't in yet, I would totally deploy this to one of them with SCCM.

Civilization on tablets guys, Civ. That's going to be mind blowing.

Civ5 runs like shit on my desktop with reasonable sized maps and more than 6 AI. And that's an OCed i7 2600K with 2 GPUs. Sid Meier will need to bust out the C++, toss that civ5 engine, and redo it.

Yeah, but Civ 5 sucks, talking about the superior Civ 4.

Interesting.

I've been a bit under a rock when it comes to actually viewing demos or playing with Windows 8. Mostly just read information.

I need to mess with it more.

That just seems like an odd contradiction.. to charge for Office with the Pro version.. when they had to completely re-code it for the ARM version.

But I think this thread over-estimates how much value MS is going to put on the Pro version of their product. I think they want people buying the RT version.. they want developers coding to WinRT, etc. I also think people over-estimate how useful a desktop PC is at 10"'s and 1080p on a little fold-away keyboard.. but time will tell.

I feel like the odd man out mostly interested in the ARM based RT tablets.. LOL
