[Nintendo Direct] 3DS XL (90% larger screen, 4GB SD, better battery) OP has details

That would be around 107 PPI.

This compares to other portable devices like such:
Code:
107 -- 3DSXL
128 -- Original PSP
132 -- 3DS
163 -- Original iPhone
221 -- Vita
219 -- Samsung Galaxy SII
326 -- Retina iPhone

So 1 pixel ~= 4 pixels on Vita.
Isn't the top screen 4.88 inches?
4.18" × 2.51" (10.63cm × 6.38cm) = 95.59 PPI

From Nintendo Facebook:

I just announced Nintendo 3DS XL which has a 90% larger screen than the original! It’s coming to stores on Aug., 19 for $199.99 U.S. MSRP. What color will you choose – Red or Blue?
- Regginator

The image of the black inside is what the red and blue look like inside.
Oh my god. If they don't release black on launch I'm holding out. Red and blue are fugly.

Where is this no ac adapter thing coming from, I absolutely do not believe that. There is some miscommunication going on, there is just no way any company on their stupidest day would pull a PR nightmare like that, least of all Nintendo.

I've been waiting so hard for this revision but now I really want that purple one and i'm concerned how stretched DS games would look like on this. They are just fine on a regular 3DS, but i'm concerned about on this. Oh god, I can't decide, Theaterhythm FF would look so god on this, and Heroes of Ruin to, and KH, oh god can't decide.

Well, the XL isn't a true revision in my eyes, it doesn't replace the base model, it's just an alternative.

That's just moving the goal posts to be frank. It is a revision. If we don't consider this to be one then all DS models won't count as revisions as well. This definitely is a revision and they lied. End of story

[Update: Nintendo says that the U.S. version WILL come with an AC adapter. Japan is doing their own thing over there.]
Glad to see sanity wins at least one round.

DS to DS Lite was a revision, the OG DS model was phased by a device with the same form factor. 3DS to 3DS XL is not a revision, is an additional Sku for people who want a big 3DS, just like the DSi and DSi XL.

USA - AC ADAPTER INCLUDED
EVERYWHERE ELSE - NO AC ADAPTER, SOLD SEPARATELY.

Confirmed. You better believe it.

no black on the inside.

Yup. Wii U influence in full effect...
minus the second analog stick...:(

Good thing that Nintendo waited till after E3 to show this.. They wouldn't have wanted to upset the balance of the show by presenting something people would get excited for...

Please Nintendo, do not make the only releases for this thing in America that ugly looking red and blue, I have a red 3ds and it's beautiful, but this looks like shit in comparison.

You're completely right, sorry about that. Fixed PPI table:
Code:
 96 -- 3DSXL
128 -- Original PSP
132 -- 3DS
163 -- Original iPhone
219 -- Samsung Galaxy SII
221 -- PS Vita
326 -- Retina iPhone

Nintendo is just as bad as apple when it comes to revisions

Lol what. Apple makes substantial revisions, bringing the hardware internals to the cutting edge technology and most ludicrious resolutions available at the time of release.

Nintendo's recent revisions on the other hand are just complete and utter shit. Ugly as fuck. Leaving out much needed, well supported, easily implemented features that many fans were clamoring for (a second stick). And having an atrociously low resolution on a big ass screen.

That AC adapter info should definitely be added to the opening. (And maybe even the thread title.)

Glad to hear it.

So buying a black one. Glad I waited.

I was only talking about the XL version, mind you. A resolution double wouldn't improve the visuals, but it would allow the larger version to retain the visual fidelity of the smaller version. How much more would you say?

But does it really require that much more power for a resolution boost?

Well you'll pay extra for that processing power... It would be like a new graphics chip, basically. And it's not even for new games... it's to merely re-render current ones for a really tiny sharpness benefits in 3D games (while meanwhile all the 2D assets look like shit). Who would want to pay extra for that? Why would Nintendo, who is trying to cut costs.. not increase them, ever do that?

Or would you suggest that alongside this, a new generation of games that take advantage of the extra processing power, which couldn't be played on old 3DS? We would call that "a new console", and 1.5 years into 3DS, that's not quite in the cards...

As a side point... I bet you'll find that a blown up 3DS looks better than you'd expect it to in your imagination. The original DS XL looked great.

Well, I was super jazzed about this. That is, until US got shafted on the colors. I want the White one so bad, but there's really no hope if we can't even get solid black. What the fuck?

I forgot about the Japanese 3DS being region-locked.
Still, the Japan eShop has tons of exclusive stuff on it.

Torn whether to import for a White + exclusive Japanese retail/eShop stuff.

This is isn't "dark, shiny, glossy, sexy red" like in the Red normal 3DS (even if the little sparkle speckles seem tacky). This is bright red matte Kindergarten Red.
Would it had really killed them to at least give Black to NA? Red and Blue only, come on.

Mm, I expected it would look more like the Wii U. The DS came out before the Wii and its redesign brought it closer to the Wii. Not like there was a trend before now but I still expected it.

A black 3DSXL I will get!

I think it looks better than the original, but still sub-par compared to the DSiXL.
