Secret best feature of 3ds XL: ds games will now be 'playable' at 1:1.

Depends on that black bar in the middle!

But yeah, I might just do all DS gaming on this if I grab it. Depends on if the enlarged size makes the D-Pad nicer to use.

Resolution still wouldn't match, though, right? Which means the jank will still be there.

edit: n/m, forgot about the 1:1 toggle.

I wasn't sure if I wanted the revision before, now I'm leaning towards probably getting it. Can I transfer all of my ambassador titles to another 3DS?

I feel like im the only person on the planet who thinks DS games look good on a 3ds, though I only own 2d games more or less, what am I missing? I have a ds lite, XL and 3ds -_-

It's been a while, how do DS games display on a 3DS screen?

you can either play them fullscreen and kind of blurry since the 3DS has more pixels so the native DS images get stretched.

or

you can play them 1:1 pixel perfect but kinda small with black borders... (i think in this mode it might be a comparable pixel density to the GBA Micro)

now on the 3DS XL 1:1 will be bigger you'd still have the black borders but the DS game would be bigger... possibly the same size as a regular DS screen... somebody do the pixel density math.

This is a big deal for me. 1:1 was too small on the current 3DS. It will be fine here.

Was this actually confirmed?

The screens bigger, so how could it not be?

Unless they've taken out the DS compatibility or the 1:1 mode. (and why would they? no cost savings as far as i can tell)

Yeah, 1:1 mode on the 3DS is prohibitively small, while full-screen mode is blurry and kills pixel-art. The increased size should bring 1:1 mode more in line with a DS Lite/DSi.

no but they never stated otherwise

DSi lack of GBA compatibility was because it needed an extra slot for different cartridges, this is not the case with the DS-3DS transition, so yeah.

Unless there was a legacy DS chip in there they'd want to yank out? But I think that would break DSiware capability, and who knows, maybe they use that hardware for other functionality. Plus those chips probably cost pennies for Nintendo now.

So... the picture will fill up the screen but it won't look badly upscaled? Not sure if I understand.

1:1 mode won't fill the screen and nothing is being upscaled.. but because the whole screen is larger, the game playing space will be physically a similar size to an original DS screen.

Are DS games region locked on a 3DS? If so my DS lite isn't retiring.

Aside from very few exceptions (the one or two DSi exclusive carts, Sonic Classic Collection), DS games are not region locked on any 3DS.

Nope. The entire crux of chickdigger802's argument is now that the screen is 90% larger, this native 1:1 output of DS games will look normal.

More specifically: the 3DS had a higher pixel density than the DSLite, hence DS games on 3DS using 1:1 shrank in screen size; the 3DSXL's larger screen/same pixel count means that it'd be back closer to DSLite screen size.

No.

However, if the game is DSi-enhanced (and some games didn't document this), then it also wouldn't work because of region locking.

yup it would

I can't play my Ambassador games though, right?

What about N-Club games?

All of your settings, games, and information excluding your credit card information transfers when you do a system transfer with the 3DS. That means you'll be able to play your Ambassador games.

There will still be black borders when not upscaled, just that the size of the image will be bigger.

See it this way (crappy example, but to give an idea :p)...

So, those that don't like the 1:1 mode on the 3DS, will get bigger image now at 1:1.

No.

Speaking of that... isn't it weird as hell that there were DSi-exclusive games that even had different style box art? I think I only saw one of them.... there couldn't have been more than 4-5.

So have we done the math yet? Will the 1:1 mode on the 3DS XL be identical in size to an original DS screen? Slightly smaller? Slightly bigger? It seems close, anyway.
