[Nintendo Direct] 3DS XL (90% larger screen, 4GB SD, better battery) OP has details

EU is getting the Silver/Black colour (the top cover looks like an ipad's reverse side), and it's launching earlier than the USA - 28th July. Those pros for myself weigh out the negative of having no AC adapter (which was confirmed in the UK stream).

Wasn't judging your decision, sorry if I gave that impression, I was just surprised it didn't have AC in EU.

Between that and the region lock I think that will definitely push me to a USA system.

I actually will jump in on the color bitching.

I want white.

I'm sure it'll come along soon enough... and I have a 3DS already, so I'm cool for awhile.

Sweet! So glad I waited for a revision, I loved the DSi XL so I know I'll love this one

Exactly! If they upped the resolution, all that would do is make games have to scale to the higher resolution, which would make them look WORSE--see: DS games on the 3DS.

And seriously, two games use the CPP. Two. People really want Ninty to add it to the hardware for that? They didn't put a 2nd analog in the 3DS to begin with, and it's too late now. All of these people who think companies should split their userbase in the middle of a hardware cycle are fucking crazy, in my opinion.

I don't disagree with your reasoning, but then they never should've made the peripheral at all. Why go to the trouble of producing this fucking weird hunk of plastic and getting developers to support it if you're going to kill it a few months later?

As for "two games", is Wikipedia mistaken?

Circle Pad Pro

Pictures of the device first appeared in Famitsu, where it explained that the add-on would add a second analog joystick and extra set of shoulder buttons and would be bundled with Monster Hunter Tri G. It will also include a black wrist strap similar to the Wii.[126][127] The first game to support it was Monster Hunter Tri G in Japan and Resident Evil: Revelations in Europe and North America. Other titles announced to be compatible with the slide pad are Ace Combat 3D (Japan version only), Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance and Dynasty Warriors VS.

GBA games didn't scale, and they looked better because they were on a true backlit screen instead of that washed out frontlit SP screen.

Huh, really? I guess my memory must be fuzzy then.

And by original GBA, I meant the original, decidedly un-backlit screen. What an awful time that was.

Ehh, my 3DS can barely fit into my pocket as it is. I already worry every time I sit down I'm going to crack the damn thing. Why is a bigger version such an improvement? Someone convince me.

Well for those of us with adult hands and bags/briefcases this makes sense. The 3DS is horribly uncomfortable to hold for any extended period of time.

The back should be black, too, right? Just nasty colors for the outer top part I hope. I wish that blue was darker.

How about some info on a Circle Pad Pro XL and 3DS XL Stand? Kidding, kidding. I just wish I hadn't bought the CPP; I never got around to using it.

PS: I reiterate my desire for the stylus to be moved to the right side of the system. And I hope the screens are at least as bright as the 3DS' screens, if not a bit brighter. Hopefully they let us set the 'real' brightness levels 4 and 5 without being plugged in; I mean, no AC included......

My guess why Nintendo chose not to bump the resolution is because I believe the brightness of the 3DS is a function of the resolution due to its parallax screen. With higher resolution comes the need for a more powerful backlight to achieve the same brightness (due to additional parallax barrier lines obstructing the screen) and thus greater power consumption. Increased battery life is a much better selling point, especially considering 3DS is such a battery hog.

If the XL is anything to go by, the screens will be brighter.

Yeah, but they were extremely limited and came out after the DS did. Good luck trying to find one for a decent price today.

Yeah, they stealth released a new model of SP with much better screens after the DS came out.

Ah

I remember me and a friend were playing SP's in a dark auditorium. I couldn't see anything on my screen unless I hit the button to turn the light on.

My friend's SP was bright enough without the light and only went brighter with the button pressed. I was mad at the time.

The games are designed for a specific resolution.

A higher resolution screen would literally do nothing to change the look of the games.

If you started re-rendering games in a new resolution, you'd need additional graphical hardware in there... and that's like talking about a new platform altogether.

No upgrade to a handheld platform has EVER had a resolution increase! No one should ever expect something like that! This is a crazy new meme or something, no basis in reality!

I would have wanted it if the visual quality of the games improved, but considering there's notable visual faults already on the current 3DS...no dice.

Sorry, Ninty, my body isn't Reggie for a larger screen and nothing enticing. I bought a Lite and a PSP 2000 for the big features they had the previous iterations lacked (better screen brightnes and TV-out) so I won't cave here.

I still have one of those fuckers. And it's the only hardware I own that plays GBA games. Needless to say, every time I consider finishing Golden Sun: TLA I shudder and forget about it.

I half-wish I had opted for a DSLite instead of a DSi, but then again the DSi's harware is so much better that it's not exactly a no-brainer...

Perfect. I'll buy a Japanese one when I get the chance.

Not sure if you know; 3DS systems are region-locked, so a Japanese 3DS can only play Japanese 3DS games. But maybe you knew that. I highly doubt Nintendo would remove region locking on this revised humongous monstrous beauty.

People who downright pass on this thing because of the color instead of being just "ugh.. oh well" and getting it anyway are the weirdest people ever

If i'm spending $200 on a piece of consumer electronics why is it strange that design is a factor? THe entire design is ugly. Looks like something that would have been released 10 years ago.

Nintendo won't give up its MonHun base, the CCP will still be supported, but as an accessory. Remember that the CCP is more than just a second analog, it adds an additional two shoulders buttons and console-like ergonomics for hardcore MonHun players.

If it had a higher resolution that was actually used, then you might have had me, Nintendo. Bigger screen at the same resolution equates to a lower PPI, and thus worse image quality in my opinion. Battery increase is nice, but having that in a larger unit is weirdly contradictory to the concept of portability.

Cool upgrade if all you want is a bigger 3DS. No other reason to buy one.

not design, specifically color

the thing aint red or blue in the inside anyway, it just seems super crazy to me to pass on something you're excited for just on the fact that it doesnt come in the colors you want

If you barely care about it/already have a 3DS then yeah, I can understand

I'm not spending $200 on that red and blue bullshit. It looks like its made for toddlers.
I knew there would be people thinking like this. And honestly I'm not sure I can blame them, I liked the aesthetics of the N64, GC, and SFC controller, but if you have a color scheme that'd sell better to people who want a "mature" looking system then release the damn thing where people care the most about that. I'd rather not have the "kiddy" perception with colors, but it honestly does feel like Nintendo is factoring out adults here entirely, nevermind some kids probably do want white or silver anyway.

However, I do think it actually makes a lot of sense for people to go "I'll wait until colors I want are out", it's entirely possible that in just a few months Nintendo will announce they'll bring white here or a new bundle with a game you (hopefully) want and color, like the red 3DS with SM3DL last year.

Nintendo's monster hunter base is coming from PSP, which only had one stick.

So, any ideas on when Amazon (UK) will be listing the XL and taking pre-orders? Today?

I've got two weeks booked off (20th July until 2nd August), and the release date falls right in the middle - which is just perfect.

batman and then a new 3DS, yay

Looks nice, but hate the lack of white for NA.

I currently have my Cosmo Black system and have been toying with the idea of trading it towards a Midnight Purple system. If they had offered white, I'd have probably traded my black system for it. Ah well, my ambassador games are safe for now until I see a color I like.

Weird. I always thought the 3DS looked terrible. The awkward headphone jack placement, the membrane over the buttons, the harsh corners.....
Yeah, this DOES look cheap but it's not as if the 3DS really looked like a slick, high end piece of electronics either. Though I disagree on the headphone jack placement, I'd rather that NOT be right where my hands may be gripping.

Are people accessing more powerful drugs than normal that they expect a bigger resolution?
I think it's a combination of Apple/smart phones setting that expection and ignoring the fact higher resolutions need more powerful hardware to support, and the fact screens that large with resolutions that low honestly could look a little nasty.

I have a 3DS already. If I'm going to make a frivolous luxury purchase, I might as well wait until it's available in a color that isn't for babbys.

I'm not spending $200 on that red and blue bullshit. It looks like its made for toddlers.

yo im tryin to be real civil here people
ya'll are crossin a line with this! blue is a respectable color, just ask sega or miles davis

Allright now I need to know if I can transfer all my download games from my OG 3DS to the XL.

you can man, there's already a system in place, check your settings. everything goes and little pikmins do it for you.

I like your attitude.

whiskey makes a man mean!

Looks like Platinum again this upcoming year.

right? WU + 2-3 launch titles, 3DS XL... i was just telling gravijers, this might be the year i get the game & watch ball thing.

How much do you think the UK price will be?

I'm betting it'll be about £170.

the red and blue aren't bad colors, they just are a bad combo with this design. Red and blue looks okay if it's glossy like the current 3DS, but it's just not a good color to go with matte.
