[Nintendo Direct] 3DS XL (90% larger screen, 4GB SD, better battery) OP has details

I don't know what you guys are talking about. The new 3DS XL looks cool. Not as cool as the DSi XL, but still MUCH better than the stock 3DS. Can't wait to get my hands on it.

If it had a higher resolution that was actually used, then you might have had me, Nintendo. Bigger screen at the same resolution equates to a lower PPI, and thus worse image quality in my opinion. Battery increase is nice, but having that in a larger unit is weirdly contradictory to the concept of portability.

Cool upgrade if all you want is a bigger 3DS. No other reason to buy one.

If anything, the revision convinced me to finally bite on the original 3DS.

I knew there would be people thinking like this. And honestly I'm not sure I can blame them, I liked the aesthetics of the N64, GC, and SFC controller, but if you have a color scheme that'd sell better to people who want a "mature" looking system then release the damn thing where people care the most about that. I'd rather not have the "kiddy" perception with colors, but it honestly does feel like Nintendo is factoring out adults here entirely, nevermind some kids probably do want white or silver anyway.

However, I do think it actually makes a lot of sense for people to go "I'll wait until colors I want are out", it's entirely possible that in just a few months Nintendo will announce they'll bring white here or a new bundle with a game you (hopefully) want and color, like the red 3DS with SM3DL last year.

That's what's so infuriating. The reason for making a larger system is to appeal to adults. That was the whole marketing angle of the original DSi XL.

Here, it's a larger system clearly designed for adults, but in kiddy colors. It makes no sense!

yea i`m not jumping in until white comes to the US...i`ll be patient

How much do you think the UK price will be?

I'm betting it'll be about £170.

It'll be the same as the DSi XL was as compared to the DSi.

DSi = £129.99
DSi XL = £159.99.

Right now, the 3DS is at a price point of around £130 in the retail market. So it makes sense to expect a price of £160-£170. Straight Yen to GBP conversion (it's 18900 yen in japan) is £150...so I'd bet on £159.99.

Time to sell my 3DS now while I can still get decent cash for it!

see, i gotta wait so i can transfer my content, plus i wanna play it till the new one's out, heh.

how is blue or red even kiddy
they don't have hello kitties and clown noses on them, dammit people

Just a thought but:

what if....what if the docking station ALSO IS the new CPP?

i like the way you think

Srsly wait for this thing to come out for it:

(XL CPP)

Gun be awesome.

what have you done

Hm... did DSi also suffer from lower Pixel Per Inch?

Good news that the AC adapter is included for the US. Probably won't get it though because of no second stick. Can't wait for the "3DS XL is final nail in Vita coffin" articles and CPP Pro XL

This revision is non-news. Seriously, same shitty battery life coupled with pixels the size of a football field. Can't they make a 3DS Micro?

I think they'll go for £179. Pre-ordering as soon as they're up available :D

I'd expect £159.99. £179 is ridiculously expensive, especially considering the lack of an AC adapter.

NOA, Ice White 3DS XL please. Thanks. Hell I'll still buy the Ice White current model. :P

Edit: you know, I really like red and black as a scheme but for some reason not on either 3DS.

Just bought my 3DS last week to prepare for Culdcept. Feels bad man, especially after Miyamoto said they wouldn't sell the 3DS LL about a week ago.

I must have missed something here because I thought they were touting much longer battery life with the XL version.

i just dont get the love for the same tired black handhelds weve had since the game gear, and ice white that looks like apple products. but to each their own!

It's the shade that kills it. Instead of a normal looking red or blue, they went with some candy colored variant that looks terrible.

i mean, i get that - my midnight blue DS is still gorgeous to me. but after all the moaning for the launch aqua blue 3DS, i thought this was a step up.

Its the matte finish what does it. Nintendo can't win, they show 3DS red/blue every complains when there not at retail.

Everyone complains at shiny 3DS. Nintendo launches matte finish Red/Blue lol

Personally I like the outside, just the inside looks a bit meh.

I'm really not sure what to be more shocked about:

No power wart? WTF? Unless they print that in 40 point font on the box they're relying on Gamestop employees to warn new buyers about it just so they can push a $15 adapter onto them...which is probably good for Gamestop but I can't believe Ninty is really willing to take the risk of consumers feeling a little screwed when they go to buy the system.

or:

People actually thinking a revision in the same generation of portable hardware could actually have a resolution increase? WTF? Are all of you new to how LCDs work? The games are all hard-coded to run at the native res, an increase of less than 4x would have to....*cringes* scale (barf vomit yuck) and 4x would just quadruple each pixel and wouldn't look any different. I guess the iPhone 4 spoiled people and made them think that could be the norm in a transition but Apple and app developers had to re-do all their graphical assets to take advantage of it.

I actually like the design and colors, pastels are great. I just wish they'd also revise the small one, that size of screen with that resolution and no AA is just something that I wouldn't want to look at.

You are so defensive, Whitney!
In the modern world the ppi of this revision is just offensive. Games on the original 3DS look grainy enough, imagine how shitty they will look on this monster.

oh jeez

THE AC ADAPTER IS INCLUDED IN NORTH AMERICA. STOP WORRYING.

you can relax now.

I don't know about Matte, but they'd win on colors just by getting either White or Silver/black out here at the least. The lack of either is ridiculous given what IS popular for handheld devices here, I can't imagine retailers pressuring Nintendo for these instead anyway.

Ewww... Those colors are so ugly. When I saw the Japanese Nintendo Direct I was like "day one for the silver-black 3DS XL" but then NoA announces these shitty colors?. Fuck that, I'm going to wait till we have a decent colour. At the rate Nintendo of America releases new colors I'll be waiting a year. Their loss, really. I had the money literally ready to buy it day one, now I'm just gonna spend on XBox 360 games instead.

After looking at those better pics, I sort of like the red.

I will probably get it at launch with Mario, and when a new color arrives that I really want in the XL I will just give my nephew the Red one.

Nintendo knows how to make a sexy matte handheld....
