[Nintendo Direct] 3DS XL (90% larger screen, 4GB SD, better battery) OP has details

Anyone mind if I make a new thread? I have an OP put together.

Or I could just post it here, but it would eventually get lost.

Sorry, huge meh for me. I'll keep my white clochard edition.
Why the hell there shouldn't be the AC adapter in the EU version? I think it's a shame!
Bigger but still there's no second pad (not a problem for me anyway), another CPP?
Same resolution.
Thanks N, you made me save my money.
Last but not least, Miyamoto's quote lol.

Loving the fact that they didn't include a second stick.

It is a bit of a disappointment, but I think I can understand the reasoning behind it. Honestly they want to keep compatibility the same across the boards.

But then again... how will they deal with CPP games? Will there be a new CPP attachment... will the old CCP work with this model? What's going on there?

Guess I'll just get the cheaper normal sized ones. Never cared for XL sized DS systems.

Was planning on getting the revision as I assumed it would have the second stick. Looks like I was wrong on that.

Not a valid reason. If I remember right Sony went ahead with releasing the dual analog controllers despite the original Playstation controller not having them. And look how that turned out (extremely well).

i read somewhere that the screen is way bigger, and battery life is better, is the thing

The resolution doesn't get any better, and increasing the size of the screen only make the image quality worse. This revision should've had the second analog stick... Imagine having to get the "second analog stick XL" for this thing... Ridiculous.

All your questions are based upon the assumptions that the CPP is a required accessory or that Nintendo actually cares for supporting the CPP. Neither of which are actually true.

Not really. The resolution / graphics are good enough for a bigger screen, maintaining Wii quality looks. Have you not seen most 3DS trailers in at least the size this thing comes in? For 3d epics with a huge scope a bigger screen was needed. Unfortunately Monster Hunter wasn't announced here so I'll still hold out a bit on trading in my original.

Exactly. IQ goes down as the screen gets larger. I'll take the smaller but cleaner image over the blown up one.

if you've been watching, i dont think the CPP is getting even a % of the support the dualshock did, though. that was sony's product to sell, this was supposedly made for capcom, for one.

not saying it's not shitty - again idve liked to have had it for RE:R and KIU alone - but let's not make it more than it is.

i serously dont believe anyone really thought the rez was gonna be better on any revision, much less one this soon. and personally, im not sweating the stick unless i see more games id want using it later...but what i do need in my life is a bigger screen (3D tires my eyes, and even playing DS JRPG's like TWEWY its tricky reading item descriptions late at night) plus improved battery life. i get that this is entirely subjective, but for me, it's ridiculous to hear that there's nothing in this revision. it's way more than idve expected this early in the cycle.

Perhaps because the changes here are not that massive to warrant the responses of "oh, well...okay". They're nice, but they seem to be perks for comfort, not something that completely revamps and redoes something, like the screens on the Lite. Games actually had color on the damn thing, so much so games were worth playing all over again on.

At the price it launched at, wouldn't you have expected this AND more?

Hmm I really dont get the color situation. Why is it so hard to release the same colors everywhere?

Nintendo,Sony and MS are all weird with colors for some reason.

you lost me on the color thing, you mean the GBA or wha?
im looking forward to replaying some of my DS classics on a larger screen, myself. they should be in color too!

oh yeah, $250 was way too much, which is why i didnt buy in until after the cut and the games started showing up. i liked what i got for the money at the time, but i knew the screen was just barely bigger than my then-current DS. battery life was what threw me for a loop, so i put $10 into the nyko pack and it's been way better since then.

there's always more a system could do for me, but i buy in when i think there's enough for my dollar, like anyone else i imagine. and like a lot of GAF, i wanst expecting an XL model till maybe next year, i guess that's much of my excitement here - ill be able to play stuff like Luigi 2 and Fire Emblem Awakening at a more ideal size for me.

PMed a couple mods about getting some stuff into the OP

thanks man...lazy salsas

By color I meant the screen brightness and quality between the original DS and the Lite. It was the backlight and sharper screens that gave every game a poppy, colorful look. The Lite and XL only upgrades the screen size, only getting fuzzier with each resolution boost.

Between the 3DS and XL, the screens are of the same quality and brightness, so it's another case of Lite vs. XL where the core difference is size, and for someone like me, that's not enough. The games on this system are not designed for such a screen size in mind.

My guess (hope) is that Nintendo just let's go and forgets... and never does a similar thing again.

One would think this is the case, but many games (mainly those that use 2D pixel graphics) benefit greatly from the bigger screen as demonstrated by the DSiXL.

Might have bit if there had been a second analog stick.

Nope.

That's why I don't get why people are jumping up and down for this.

Colors 3D... yeah I'll buy one just for this app alone.

My guess (hope) is that Nintendo just let's go and forgets... and never does a similar thing again.

Agreed. The CCP is a concession to bad control design. Outside of MGS3D the CCP was never a necessity. And MGS3D is probably the game with the worst controls and Touchscreen use I've ever had the misfortune to play. It's a complete travesty and just shows that Kojipro has absolutely no clue how to make 3D controls.

But ranting aside, I don't care for a second stick. A bigger touch screen also means more room for stylus/finger aiming. It also means that Colors 3D will be a lot more comfortable to use.

No second stick is dumb. So theyre really going to make a 3DS Circle Pad Pro and a 3DSXL Circle Pad Pro instead?

Either way, bigger screen and better battery life makes me feely plenty vindicated on never touching Nintendo hardware at launch. Good ol' Miyamoto lies.

ah, i get you... i never had the fatty but ive seen comparisons.
i guess they could've done more here with lighting, but honestly - especially with the larger screen - you gotta figure anything like that is gonna take a toll on the battery even more, no? i see what youre saying, and it mightve been a better tradeoff, but im not one of the people on GAF who thinks the 3DS screen looks like shit. it's not at all the vita granted, but games like KIU look great to me, and im mostly playing older eshop/ambassador shit right now anyway, so again im kinda happy they went the way they did for my purposes.

my only fear is that your point about games not designed for the screen will actually cause some text to look worse than before.

Is the 3D sweetspot better?

Have they changed the sharp little plastic nubbins on the base which dig into your fingers when you hold it?

Day one for the red one (to go along with my red Mario 25th Anniversary DSi XL).

I'm pretty disappointed by the lack of second analog stick/extra shoulder buttons but I love the DSi XL too much not to get this.

Was the quality loss so bad going from a Dsi to an XL that so many people complain about the same resolution ?

It'll obviously be bad for DS games unless they make something about it, but ...

It's a bigger screen, so logically there will be a better sweetspot for the 3D, in relation to your eyes.

And yes, the shitty home buttons are gone.

.

Yeah but a game controller is easy to replace for those who bought older model PS1's. Buying a whole new hand held system for a second analog is a bit different of a story.

This is true. Nintendo used the CPP as a way to get Capcom on board with the Monster Hunter series. Those were the first games announced for the accessory. Now that they achieved that, I guess they can forget about supporting the CPP.

Well, a bigger form factor means it can support a beefier battery. The reason the battery is so shit on the 3DS is because it has the same form factor of a DS Lite trying to run games with the visual quality of Wii games. That drains it like nothing else. The better battery goes hand in hand with the bigger screens and system size. Personally, I tend to really game on it at home with the charger plugged in as that adds additional brightness, and I don't really go anywhere much, so the better battery life isn't for me. For some, that's enough to warrant buying this, and that's cool.

Uk price, or are they doing that annoying 'this is the price in euros, uk retailers will set their prices' that nobody except Nintendo seems to do

And any news on a cradle? I don't care if I have to buy it separately, it's so convenient I'd need to have one

You seem to have come to that conclusion 20 years too late.

Nahhh.

1989 - Game Boy
1996 - Game Boy Pocket.

That's a gap of 7 years before the GB got it's first revision. The GBC didn't count as it was technically a new console, and the GBA was it's successor. The revisions only really picked up in 2003 with the SP.

I'd say...he has come to the conclusion 9 years late.

It's likely to be £159.99. My reasoning:

1. when the DSi XL was launched, the DSi was the same price as the 3DS is now. That XL launched at £159.99.

2. No AC adapter.

3. The JP price is 18,900 yen. That's £150. add another tenner, and you have your price.

The EU direct show had a cradle + charger pack image.

3.5 to 6.5 hours for 3DS games.
6 to 10 hours for DS games.

Battery charge time 3 hours and 30 minutes.
The charging time yes.

3DS

Battery life playing 3DS games: 3-5 hours
Battery life playing DS games: 5-8 hours
So roughly an hour longer playtime? Not sure it's worth the extra $30 and uglier design. Don't care for the screen size either way so I guess I'll just go for whichever has the better deal/bundle/color.
