[Nintendo Direct] 3DS XL (90% larger screen, 4GB SD, better battery) OP has details

Nintendo doesn't care about the CPP, we were never gonna get a 3DS with it. I remember reading about it in early 3DS docs, Nintendo was only going to release it if there was third party interest, similar to how they originally said they would look into the Wii-U having 2-Gamepad support in case a third party developer wanted to support it, and even then one system owner would have to take his controller to a fruend's house. Notice all the support Nintendo has given the CPP - they didn't advertise it, they only sold it at one retail store, they only shipped a few of them to each store. They added support for it to one of their games, but only for left-handed play.

I think you're right...

...and I think if you listen to podcasts, read GAF posts, etc, circa late 2011, you will laugh your ass off about how many people thought it was the indication of a total 3DS refresh, revision, admission of hardware failure, etc.

It wasn't shit!

Apologies if this has been mentioned but I thought they needed the black bg around the screen to aid the 3d effect?
That was one of the reasons.
Now, seems that because of the bigger size of the screens it may not be as needed.

If anything ,the smaller/regular 3DS would be a better sign of that. If units of that size or smaller don't have said black borders; then it was indeed bull. :p

and the US only gets

Red/Black

Blue/Black

*sigh* NoA...
US gets AC cable too. :p

 I think I'll keep my purple 3DS, thanks. One of the reasons I like my 3DS is because of how dainty and compact it is, and while I loved my XL I just don't see reverting back to that.

So IGN says NA gets an AC adapter

While reports earlier tonight indicated that the Japanese version of the system will not include an AC adapter, Nintendo of America has confirmed that the North American version of the 3DS XL will include an AC adapter in the package. A 4GB SD card will also be included with the system.

The system will be released in red and blue. Europe will also receive a silver option.

They got 2/3 right. Bigger screen? Cool. Longer battery? Much needed. No second stick? Ridiculous. So are they saving it for the next re-vision? : /

I’ll stick with my original. I went through the whole DS gen with my original phat, and I’ll be doing the same here. I think I’m over my 3DS anyway

The charging time yes.

3DS

Battery life playing 3DS games: 3-5 hours
Battery life playing DS games: 5-8 hours

So why is the bottom limit only improved a half hour but the upper limit improved by 90 minutes? Also, I never figured it out, what DOES cause the extra battery drain. More demanding games? Or is it just having 3d turned on?

MIYAMOTO THE LIAR!!!!

hahaha, good I waited :D
Now that I dig up those old stories, it's not that he lied: it's that some news sites put words in his mouth. He never actually said there wasn't going to be a revision, he just said some non committal stuff about being satisfied with how the 3DS is now and they're thinking about the future.

Though that bit about the gyroscope making up for a lack of a right stick definitely was a hint we wouldn't be seeing that added here.

Both. No 3D gets you the upper limit, with 3D your most likely under the lower limit of 3 hours. (on the original). Plus power saving options ofc.

People talking doubling the pixel resolution to increase the pixel count really didn't think it through. Regardless of whether the console has a resolution increase, the software is programmed to use the resolution of the 3DS. Regardless of whether the hardware has a resolution increase or not, the pixel resolution of games will still be the same, except now one pixel is made up of four pixels. There will be nothing that Nintendo will make that will take advantage of a resolution increase.

With that said, this hardware does look interesting. I wish that the battery life increases were better since I am assuming that this uses a much larger battery.

I will likely buy this bad boy this fall since it does look like the 3DS I always wanted :)

To be honest I'd probably be all over this system if it came out in a decent color. NoA needs to fire whoever decided those colors were good. :P

gimme

my red reign of handhelds continue

I'm actually really excited on this one.... I dont really like anything about my 3ds.... Always felt it paled in comparison to my xl.... Really looking forward to this one. I'll probably wait til there's other colors or some cool LEs though as I'll probably be getting a wiiu this year.

Besides the size, is that due to the picture or do I see soft DSL-esque buttons?

If so, gimme gimme gimme. I just got MK7 yesterday and damn, playing it on 3DS is painful.

Has anybody figured out whether or not the size increase corresponds to a proportional increase of the pixels? It'd be incredibly shitty if it didn't scale quite right and games would look all janked out.

Sigh, still no second stick? What the hell nintendo?

I'm also guessing the current CPP won't be compatible with this new revision? Typical Nintendo. :/

Wretched behavior from Nintendo. Release an add on that is all but required to play certain games properly, release new revision of handheld that makes said add on unusable...until they release new one for the same price.

No second analog in this "revision"... Just made it bigger... So... I'm guessing the pixelation will be even more prominent?

Might have bit if there had been a second analog stick.

Nope.

That's why I don't get why people are jumping up and down for this.

no second stick is a bummer, but beside it, it's excellent:

1. 'Large' screen
2. Very good Better battery life
3. No shiny border
4. Round corners
5. only $30 more

Really good purchase; I just hope the screen quality is better like DS revisions too; think soon we will have hands-on impressions.
