Microsoft Surface Tablet announced

$599 seems ok to me. Don't forget that includes the smart cover that doubles as a keyboard. Though, I do agree that if Microsoft really wants to take on the iPad with the RT they should shoot for sub $500. $449 for all that and I'd be in day one (but that's wishful thinking). Count me in at $599.

Easy to shoot for a price, not easy to stomach losing a bunch of money on each unit sold. I know, razor blades, etc. But if it came down to high quality and a higher price, I'd take that.

It absolutely does compare favorably to ipad but the 32 gig version. If they have a GOOD 1366x768 screen I don't think you will see too many complain about it next to the retina display because you will really have to squint to see pixels on either. Build quality otherwise will be as good as the ipad.

Then they see windows 8 (and more importantly office load up) and will see the difference in software imo. All they have to do is pin 2 apps side by side and that crowd will go nuts because they will think its real multitasking.

That said I still think it hits the $499 price point.

seeing the difference in software heavily favors Apple

Actually, the experience of using Windows 8 apps is totally different than iOS apps, because of the MetroBorg Prime Directive that makes them fairly consistent and easy to use. It is almost like Out-Apple-ing Apple.

There's no way the Surface is going to be $399. Not with 32GB of storage and that build quality.

It needs to be though, even if that requires Microsoft to take a loss on each unit. Absolutely no one is going to pick Surface RT over iPad if they're the same price.

OS or software?

One company actually has applications, the other doesn't.

and seeing Office load up will probably be one of the most jarring experiences of playing with the tablet.

How is that jarring? You know that the corporate world is just foaming at the mouth for Office on a tablet, right?

If these prices end up being true it's DOA. The Windows RT model needs to be 499 and pro model 699-799 MAX for this to have a chance. I'm sorry but 999 is suicide, even for how amazing of a tablet it might end up being.

MS is going to have to take a loss at first if they want to seriously compete with Apple. No fanboy here, I really want this to do well. But there is no way in hell I spend 1000 on a tablet, even if it is a full blown PC.

yes. they will sell not one device. ever. absolutely not!

Agreed, 999 for the Windows Pro Model is way too much, I can get an ultrabook for that price, with better specs and bigger drive.

I agree that Metro apps are just starting to be developed. The Surface w/ Windows 8 Pro, however, is so much more superior than the iPad in terms of number of software for work & play.

I don't think they are bothered about competing for volumes with Apple, they want consumers to want the Surface, and if they see it and think 'If only that was $200 cheaper' then they'll see the OEM version and realise it's doing the same thing in a less polished way and get that.

The Surface is about driving demand for Windows 8, not necessarily selling the most units.

How is that jarring? You know that the corporate world is just foaming at the mouth for Office on a tablet, right?

You put a good, working version of Word on a tablet, and my entire firm would switch to Surface. So many of us have ipads, and the universal complaint is, "if this had Word, it'd be perfect." I have a feeling Surface is going to be huge in the business world.

Exactly. My company has been looking into iPads for our field techs. It sucks trying to find a workaround for software that we need them to be able to use. If these surface tablets do even half of what MS claims they can do, we're in.

Jarring as in, jumping to the land of the old desktop.

They are, and will most likely be getting it later this year on the a device that millions in the corporate world already have.

Examples? I'm actually genuinely curious.

there are none that can match the specs, let alone beat it, at $999, not sure what he's talking about

999 seems like a great price for the Pro. That was my best-case scenario.

I don't really have a handle on the tablet market, is that price so horrible for the RT? Isn't it comprable to the iPad for a model with the same memory? I understand that it has a lower-res display, same as the iPad2 right?

I can see that being a hard sell but not outright awful.

Here's one:

Asus Zenbook Prime - $1029.99 - Link to site

Specs:
Display 13.3" IPS FHD (1920 x 1080)
CPU Intel i5-3317 (1.7GHz)
Intel HD Graphics 4000
Memory 4G DDR3
Hard Drive 128GB SSD

EDIT: Theres an 11" 1080p model that hasn't been released yet, the UX21A, and it's likely to be cheaper than this model when it comes out.

You'd have three requirements if you were looking up something to try and prove your point. It would need to have a current gen Intel CPU (Ivy Bridge), it'd need to have a 10 in. 1080p screen, and it would need to be a conic with an SSD drive.

There certainly won't be many tablets with similar specs and features for around $1000. For example, both the IdeaPad Yoga and the latest X-series tablet will likely be more expensive. I don't know if we have prices from other PC builders.

MS is going to release Office for iOS.

Have they fixed the track pad now?

It seems they listened to user complaints with the previous model, will probably have to wait for reviews to be sure, but here's what they had to say:

Beyond the rose gold and snappy hot pink options for the metallic case, ASUS has listened to users and made significant changes to the usability. Still impossibly thin and lightweight, ASUS has improved the backlighting and pitch of the keyboard and fine-tuned the trackpad.

Flash goes a very long way to make the app argument less important.... a huge number of apps necessary on ios are website replacement apps which are only needed because the full website will not work on ios.... won't be an issue with win8.

What they need to focus on is getting a good library of games..... with xbox live they could end up competing very well there too. The games shown so far look pretty good and with better multiplayer through xbox live they have a competing argument to make.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the RT won't run anything that isn't a Metro styled app.

Also, has it been confirmed that Office is really coming to the iPad? I've seen a few rumors but nothing concrete. I think it would be pretty stupid to do that now, but hey, it's Microsoft.

its ok, it took a few years for most of Android fans to jump on the Flash is dead bandwagon with Apple fans, hopefully its faster for Windows fans

MBA doesn't have a 1080p screen.

this is exactly why i just got my zenbook prime this morning. The MBA "refresh" was sub-par

Exaggeration obviously, but what compelling reason is there to get a Surface RT over an iPad if they're the same price?

Office has been rumored for iPad for months now, and NY Times confirmed it just two weeks ago. http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/06/05/as-google-bets-on-mobile-office-microsoft-waits/

I can see MS perhaps making Office time exclusive to RT for a few months, but it's not really going to be a huge long-term advantage.

It's not just flash.... its having a real desktop browser ported to the tablet and not scaling the limited phone browser up. Most websites will "just work" in IE10 making apps unnecessary for that content.

How are you liking the zenbook?

My point is they should learn from Zune. They have a good product, but if they want to do what you are stating"Drive demand for Windows 8", then they better do it at a price point people want.

This hardly makes sense

http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/21/acer-iconia-tab-a700/

Acer Iconia A700 1920x1200 10.1 inch display , 32 gig storage and has a Tegra 3 processor.

Its price is $450 . So we are expecting ms to launch at $150 more 4 or 5 months from now ? I don't see it at all. Unless this isn't tegra 3 and is instead Wayne. With wayne and the keyboard i can see it .

As for the PRO . This is not going to ship for more than $800 at the base price with the 64gig drive and thats if it even shiped with 64 gigs as an option

http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/22/falling-ssd-prices-swift-boot-up/

of that means that a 256 GB drive which cost $500+ in June 2011, now runs less than $200 -- and at $.82 / GB, it turns from a near-luxury good to at least a thinkable proposition for many.

So I bet when this comes out early next year the only options are 128/256 . I bet the 128 gig one will come in at $800 and the 256 gig one will come in at 1k on the dot but will offer a small cpu bump that you only get with that model

How do you know its not a price people would want ?

$1k for what the machine does is easy to justify in the busniess world esp if it can replace a workers laptop + tablet needs . Heck with a proper dock this can replace most users desktop also.

Think about it .

You go to work and you have a nice 24 inch monitor that connects to a dock and the dock has a keyboard and mouse on it. You simply put your Surface Pro in it and boom there is your desktop computer. You got a meeting to go to so you undock the Surface and go to the meeting and use your pen to take notes or the touch cover. Then you need to go home and you simply take your 2lbs tablet home with you and you can dock it at home. Need to go on busniess ? Boom its only a 2lbs 10 inch tablet to bring with you.

I know that would sell , alot of my friends are already interested in it for just this reason
