[Nintendo Direct] 3DS XL (90% larger screen, 4GB SD, better battery) OP has details

Can I save all my ambassador games to an SD card and just port them over to this? I want this.

EDIT: Nevermind, now I know you can actually do this.

If you want to be top class in Revelations, it's CPP or bust. I guess it depends on how you play your games that dictates whether the stick is relevant or not.

I vow to never play revelations without the CPP, it makes it a console style shooter on my 3DS and I love that. I can't wait for KH to come out so I can use this thing some more. What are the chances they drop support for the CPP?

I really thought Miyamoto would go back on his "no second circle pad" quote, but I guess I was wrong. The system looks good, but with out the second circle pad, I'll pass. Plus, if they release a CPP addon for the LL, think how gigantic that system would be.

Well shucks, I new it was coming but was still holding out hope for the Pro features.

I doubt it'll be encouraged unless they make a new giant one. Menu buttons look improved, which is nice.

zero i'd say. developers are still going to make games that support it and play better with it for the same reason they campaigned to get Nintendo to release it in the first place. Nintendo will more than likely continue to ignore it. games will still have to be designed to work with just one stick.

but see, again, why do you want to turn Revelations into a console style shooter? that's just so mad to me. it's not supposed to be a console style shooter. blah. pick better examples of games that would or do benefit from dual analogue controls because there are plenty. Revelations is a bad example. bad.

Monster Hunter is the perfect example.

If you can't manage without dual analog and baby-aim, I suggest sticking to the 3 HD consoles or QHD handheld. You've got plenty of options, no need to dumb down my hardcore games.

Pretty much all I care about is improved ergonomics and a more comfortable fit for my hand and long fingers. This larger unit just might fix that issue for me and for that I would purchase one without hesitation. The improved battery life would also be welcome.

Can't wait to see how it feels in the hands. I am also interested in the screen. The current 3ds has such a small sweet spot, that at times I have to turn of the 3d.

Maybe with the XL a new CPP will only stuck on the side of the 3ds.
But for this they need to add an IR on the side.
I can't imagine a bigger standard CPP.

I'm still pissed off that we don't get white.

It would be better if we actually got red and blue but no, all, we get is Nintendo pretending to have two colors when there is only black. Horrible.

I actually like the black, but I got a black 3DS and usually like switching colors when I get a new revision/system.

Still, this is the first time since the DSL that we have only gotten one color for a handheld. Kinda shocking. (Red and Blue do not excist if its only on the top layer! They are both black and anyone who says otherwise is delusional.)

:p

But seriously, it really is only one color in my eyes. Makes me sad Nintendo went back to the horrible two colored DSL colors.

Still might get it, but if I do I may be unable to get a Wii U at launch. (Which ain't saying much, especially if Pikmin 3 doesn't launch till next year)

Those screens...I wants them.

Seriously. I honestly can't believe what I'm reading this morning, it's as if these people just put down their N64s or something.

In my case I don't want to play action games that require a second stick on a handheld anyway, so I'll be getting a 3DS XL.

My favorite PSP and DS games were titles like Ouendan, SMT Devil Survivor, Tactics Ogre, Wipeout, etc.

You're good. For a minute there, I thought you were serious.

I do want to play those games and that's why my 3DS is sitting in the dock whilst my Vita is blasting out Gravity Rush.

WipEout uses the right stick to do a 180 in battle mode ;)

Tempting, but still surprised to see no second stick. Seems like they don't want to play up the second stick for the sake of original 3ds adopters.

Nintendo will never make a game in-house that uses it. (Kid Icarus was Sora, and support was thrown in at the last minute.) If they wanted a second stick for first party games, they would have built it into the system from the get-go. The CPP is purely for third party developers.

I did some quick calculation with regards to pixel density:

Original 3DS = 132 ppi
3DS XL = 96 ppi
DSi = 98 ppi

...that means that 1:1 mode for DS/DSiWare games will be comparable to playing the game on a DSi. Here's a mock-up I made to visualize the difference.

How does adding more options dumb anything down for you? If you don't wanna use it, don't use it. But don't say others shouldn't have the option for the 3DS.

I mean, it is what it is and it's why I won't be buying certain games for my 3DS but it makes no logical sense to not include a second analog stick.

For me, gyro and touchscreen aiming are a pain because while I play 2.5 hours a day it's on the damned train and it shakes like hell.

More options are NEVER a bad thing.

So how is this going to affect the 3D in games? Like someone else mentioned, seems like the larger the screen gets, then it's going to be a bit more difficult to find that sweet spot which provides the best 3D viewing?

I may end up making jaggies looking a little worse. We'll wish for some 4XAA.lol

... Is what I first thought. But I think I know: to have a 3DS that's profitable from day one. Hence the absence of a charger.

This will please investors I guess, but it's a joke from a consumer's standpoint.

what was the point of the DSi XL?

whatever it was, it still sold pretty well... so presumably theres a market for such devices.

I doubt the charger is really a cost thing, 3DSXL is going to be cheapest in the only region that includes one. There's undoubtedly some other (dumb) reasoning behind it.

I was waiting for an XL version for some time now since the system is hard to hold and look especially after the Vita, I even got the Cp-pro for just holding it first and the Circle pad was just an extra , if the new model didn't update the screen size I would've been truly disappointed.

Reading some of the comments here, makes me realize that some people are just so irrational brand loyal, that it is no wonder why big companies like Apple or Nintendo can screw customers with half-cooked revisions over and over again and get away with it...

Yup.

First of all, it's not a revision.

...I'll bite.

How on Earth is this not a revision? It's a new version the same platform with improved battery tech and screen

Yeah they have been saying to investors that they expected the situation with 3DS profitability would change before October. I always took this as meaning a new model. Maybe they'll be getting rid of chargers in the small 3DS box too? :o

The revision most people said they'd wait for was implied to be something with the same form factor and price point. A DS Phat -> DS Lite update rather than DSi -> DSi XL.

Honestly I can't see what else. Nintendo is no stranger to that kind of cost-cutting measures, no matter how little. See MP3 support for Wii dropped in favor of AAC.

@others: of course it's good to have a bigger screen. But you'd expect a premium model (or any model, really) to include a charger at least. The DSi XL I could sorta understand the point as it was meant for older people, it included a pencil-like stylus and a couple of games with a significantly improved battery. Plus it just had a slick design with colors that screamed refinement. It was also one last way to bolster hardware sales before the new system. The 3DS XL just looks odd.

£128 actually..
...plus $199.99 doesn't include sales tax...and I'd be very surprised if we don't see some retailers selling it in the UK for £159 or less (which in real terms is only £5 more than the US taking our 20% VAT rate into account).
There are a few states that don't have to pay sales tax at all, and so will get a 3DS XL at that price. Also, average sales tax seems to be around 6% which would bump the US price up to $212, which is still only £136 with charger, not £145. That's a long way from £180 with no charger.

Yup.

See below.

A revision replaces the existing version of a product. The XL will be sold in tandem with the original 3DS, much like the DSi and DSi XL are still sold today.

Once the DS Lite came out, the DS PHAT was put to bed completely. That was a revision of the platform.

In short, this is just a new SKU/model.

Looking at the trailer for the 3DS XL, there seems to be a port on the right side and 2 places where something could attach to. Maybe a small attachable Circle pad? Or what else could this be?

I'd have to see a demo in store to make sure the resolution is still acceptable, but this might be what gets me to finally get my 3DS. Probably going red if it is.
