[Nintendo Direct] 3DS XL (90% larger screen, 4GB SD, better battery) OP has details

The fact that they're only releasing this in Red and Blue in NA makes me think NOA really does think all their potential 3DS owners are kids. 'Hey, Ipods are mostly white and sometimes black. Those are popular, but we can't have people think we're an idevice or something. So let's release our handhelds in tacky red and tacky blue. It's huge and vibrant so a kid lets all his friends know that he's got a Nintendo handheld. A kid doesn't care that it won't match with his WiiU! We are geniuses!'

Have you not seen what's actually required for an emulator to internally render a game at a higher resolution? It's really not as simple as you seemingly assume. The fact that Dolphin requires at minimum a quad core 3ghz+ processor to render a Wii game at 1080p with minimal glitches should speak volumes about just how ridiculous hoping for a similar effect on the 3DS XL actually is.
Admittedly that's completely different hardware emulating a console, for something like this it'd be a simpler issue of putting in more powerful versions of the components already in there, similar to an iOS device or how GC games ported to Wii can get Widescreen added.

... Of course, there's STILL the fact you'll have HUD issues, not all games can necessarily have this happen without a hit to performance despite that hardware being fine for 90% of the games, and as I understand there's many settings thrown into emulators to cover when problems arise. Here's the thing most people seem to completely ignore: this is a console, not a PC or PC-like platform. Games for consoles are designed for a very narrow set of hardware to ensure even performance across all systems and the guarantee they can push hardware without worrying about losing customers. That, and emulators are a hobbyist effort, they're not trying to sell this, they're making them because they want better performance on PC, want to play stuff on their PC period, or just enjoy the challenge of it.

Another thing about the resolution: can you imagine how games meant for a 480p 3DS would look on the standard 3DS? It'd be like playing HD games on an SDTV, you'd have to hope they remembered the lower resolution model and QA'd it properly. Assuming they didn't just break base, which is a terrible, terrible idea for a device that is having some problems with getting people to buy it.

The red is starting to grow on me somewhat, but still...

how long do you guys think it will be before we get some sort of limited edition XL? There were only two LE DSiXLs as far as I know, but that revision was released much later on in the DS's lifespan.

I'm REALLY happy its matte this time though.

Wouldn't you just up-rez an original resolution screenshot into a +90% resize using no filters to get an idea of the scaling?

wow.. i don't care too much about the second stick, but it would have been a PSvita finisher had it placed a second stick on the top, unlike the uncomfortable positioning of the vita's on the bottom.

I hope this means the purple one will drop in price :D might have to get this one, though.

as far as the resolution, i'm sure they're not gonna just let it look as pixelated/jagged as the above screenshots..

Wouldn't you just up-rez an original resolution screenshot into a 190% resize using no filters to get an idea of the scaling?
Try 137% instead of 190% ^_^

(I'm almost sure that the +90% is for the surface, not the dimensions)

That being said, it's not a good comparison (a +37% increase will add artifacts because it's not an integer upscale). Besides, some of your shots are not so great to begin with.

No second stick, now I never have to cut my dick off. GAF must be pleased.

As for the revision, looks slick, but the same resolution is disappointing, it already looks crummy on the small screen, it's going to look like ass on this.

Both colours for NA are disgusting. Have the European colours been confirmed? If the wasn't any region locking, I'd get the white Japanese one.

Imagine having a SNES VC to play Super Metroid on this massive screen. Do it, Nintendo.

I love the NA colours, I'm gonna be all over that red one. So much better than the XL which launched with brown and burgundy, lol.

The burgundy DSi XL is beautiful. It just looks slick and classy, like the high end sports car of the DS line.

The 3DS is such a mess aesthetically. The 3DS XL is an massive improvement, but still looks cheap next to the DSi XL.

I'd say it's more impractical to have a screen nearly double the size yet with the same resolution. What's the point?

The point is: it's bigger and you don't have to hold it right next to your face.

A 22-inch full HD TV set has the same resolution as a 50-inch set. Doesn't seem to bother too many people.

Also, depending on the screen type, with larger screen will have relatively smaller "borders" around the pixels, which boosts colors and provides a cleaner image.

Anyone else glad this is a matte finish? Looks that way anyway. I guess I'm pretty OCD when it comes to fringerprints and smudges. lol

I'll buy it JUST because it's matte: I'm very OCD about that stuff. I'll give my current red 3DS to my sister (that don't give a fuck about fingerprints and stuff like that).

Welcome to the superior XL race. dsiXL has the best matte finish on any handheld I've held (dsi comes second).

But...

I like the red :/

black and white launch with pokemon?

The best part of the 3DS XL is the potential bundles for current 3DS owners. Rather than settling for a launch color 3DS XL you can wait until there is an amazing game bundle with some sort of exclusive decal (like the Zelda 3DS).

The matte finish and 1:1 DS game playability on the larger screens will definitely play a major roll in a potential purchase. A second analog could've softened the blow for current Circle Pad Pro owners, but I feel that a Black Friday bundle will prove to be nearly irresistible.

Still mad about the flat, boring, dull, tacky colors that the US is getting lol.

Someone should make petition to Nintendo of America so that we can at least get some good looking colors here (like the silver x black or the all white). Tired of getting the shaft when it comes to choices of color.

::Kanye voice:: "Nintendo hates American people."

holy crap at the people here not knowing how graphic engines work

And lol at the comparissions to apple. Each iteration of the iphone is not a revision, it's the next model. They can do stuff like upscale the resolution of old stuff if the apps update accordingly and because the newer iphone would be more poerwful.

None of this was ever going to be true of the 3DS XL. It's a revision of existing hardware that acts as a response to previous complaints (screen size, battery life) without significantly increasing the price. What did people seriously expect? a system that costed up to something 100 bucks more JUST to have the games at a bigger resolution? and for Nintendo to somehow update all previous 3DS games to display properly? and for the upcoming games to support both?

this never happened in a revision of a system, ever.

Yes, apparently.
And they'd complain about it if it DID do that and cost $100 more.

Wait, you want Nintendo to include all the hardware needed to hardware-emulate a GBC, GBA, NES, Sega Master System, and Turbografx-16 in a 3DS??? That thing would be ginormous! And expensive as hell!
Given the state of Hudson these days and the fact its not been mentioned in 2 years I think this has been axed. Then again TG-16 was like the smallest one of those...

for Nintendo to be Apple.

Didn't PSP2000 onwards have more RAM (32 to 64mb)? Hardware changes like that are always nice. Although they barely get much support (like DSi's change)
