[Nintendo Direct] 3DS XL (90% larger screen, 4GB SD, better battery) OP has details

there is no reason to lower the price of the 3DS. it's basically just adding a feature (bigger screen). if you want the added feature, pay $30. if you don't, buy the regular 3DS

Eh, I don't think $30 is a big enough differentiator to divide the two products. I expect a 3DS price drop, maybe to $149 USD.

I've not read the entire thread at this point, and it's probably already been said, but why the hell didn't Nintendo show this thing at E3? If not their main conference, why not the sub-conference for the 3DS? It's mind boggling. Fear of negative press or something? Distraction from the Wii U? The time between the reveal of the DS Lite after the original DS had to have been similar, so I don't feel it's "too soon" of an announcement or anything.

it felt like e3 was really just for wiiU. they even said that in the days leading up. why they didn't do it i don't know..... but i don't think it matters

Nintendo doesn't know what it's doing anymore. Why not announce this at E3? If not during their big press conference, why not at the 3DS one? Why not announce Layton and Fire Emblem coming to the US?

If your choices are $170 3DS or $200 XL, which would you pick? Which would they want you to pick?

As for E3, I'd guess focus on the Wii U and otherwise to show the general lack of importance of the show.

It isn't a big enough difference. If I had to hazard a guess it's intentional and they're still losing some money on the OG 3DS but aren't on the XL. So now there's a (not exactly subtle) push to get folks to favor one over the other.

It is what it is, one way you get more than what you paid for and the other way you just get what you're paying for.

Nintendo is still losing money on the 3DS. I guarantee they are not losing money on the 3DSXL. They won't lower the price of the regular 3ds model since they would rather make money on hardware than lose it.

I think the industry wants to kill e3. They've succeeded imo.

The DSiXL was released at $170 on a time that the DSi was $150.
The DSi then went down to $130; and the XL continued at $170...up until a month ago.

If anything, a price drop might depend on sales more than on the two units' price difference.

Interesting…
That pic makes it look thinner than I expected.

^^^^

Wow you are right that is really thin.

I kinda wish Nintendo pulled an Apple and made it available a week from the announcement. That would've been bad ass.

I don't know if you live in NA, but we are getting it late and with crappy color choices. :/

I can finally have a proper launch DSLite replacement if NoA would offer it.

Yeah I'm in Chicago. I really could not care less about the color choices, but waiting until August is killing me!

I think only Apple's been able to successfully do that. Sega tried the same thing with the Saturn, and that was one of the biggest disasters to ever happen.

Then again, this IS a revision, not a whole new platform. Not like you have to rush games out to be published, or make space for the games on short notice, just get it sorted out higher up a month ahead of time or however much time's needed.

I'm glad they changed the positioning of the battery indicator light. There's been a few time that I've failed to notice the light was red with my current 3DS. The pictures make it look like you'll be able to see the light when looking down at the bottom screen.

I don't agree with a lot of Nintendo's decisions at E3, but it was a good decision to hold off on this. Wii U was the focus. I know there was another conference, but I still think it's best that hardware wise Nintendo focus on Wii U at E3 and leave this for later.

I've just thought of this.
Does anyone know if the 3DS XL comes with AR cards included?

Might have saved them from having such an underwhelming show. But hey what do I know.

I have a feeling 3DS is going down in price or XL will just overtake it.

According to Nintendo it's half a mm thicker compared to the DS Lite

Cool. Guess is an illusion the size and angle.

I guess so. In either case, you can print PDFs of the cards from the official site; so if they get "really cheap" they'll probably include an insert telling you to download/print them. :p

3DS XL weighs more than DSi XL? Looks like I won't be getting one then. DSi XL was horrible to play, for me. My wrists started hurting after holding it for more than 10 minutes. It was like holding a brick.

Might have saved them from having such an underwhelming show. But hey what do I know.

I don't think their strategy or ambitions are unclear at all. In fact, it seems crystal clear to me. They're downplaying the role of their E3 conference (particularly in terms of 3DS, which isn't really targeted at the West in the same way it is in Japan), and shifting the emphasis on to their own Nintendo Direct shows, which can be deployed at short notice to get great hype. Why share news with most other big gaming companies for one week a year, when they can dictate the news agenda for themselves whenever they please?

I see no downside. We get a steady stream of announcements and unveilings throughout the year, and Nintendo get to have the news and hype to themselves in a way that they otherwise wouldn't if they stuck to E3.

E3 is simply nowhere near as prominent in Nintendo's plans as it once was, and, considering how successful the Nintendo Direct broadcasts have been for them, that's only going to become more true.

E3 is certainly not the be all and end all for Nintendo from now on.

Man, gotta agree on this. The DSiXL was heavy for me too..

Has anyone done a comparison to the size of the Vita yet?

Why does everyone like the bigger screen? I've never used the ds XL, but for anything monitor/tv related I also prefer the largest resolution to the smallest screen size. To a certain degree of course, I'm assuming the games are all the same reso across both 3DS systems so won't that make it look worse scaling it to a larger screen? (Think older iphone games running on the ipad)

There is no scaling.

The screen resolution is the same. Just bigger.

Everything is easier to see? I have far less than perfect eyesight, so the bigger the better for me.

As someone else said, lower resolution on a higher screen is one thing but you'll naturally hold it further away creating a similar viewing experience.
