TL;DR:
What x% of a population would have to fit a stereotype for it to be considered true/valid/etc?

So, on to the topic.

To start off, I'll list examples of three pervasive stereotypes, so we can discuss the topic in the context of these three. Whether you believe them to be true is up to you.

1. Women are bad drivers (or something similar).
2. Black people are bad tippers (or something similar).
3. Gay people are promiscuous (or something similar).

A few things to point out about stereotypes:
1. Targets are populations which are either minorities (blacks, gays) or perceived to be weaker in some area (women drivers).

2. Contentious stereotypes tend to be those which paint the population in a negative light e.g. "Chinese people are good at math" - no one would have a problem with that though it may or may not be true.

3. Generally arise out of personal experiences (or lack thereof). Have you come across a bad female driver? Or a bad black tipper? Or a promiscuous gay person? Personally, I have for all three. But I'm inconclusive on the veracity of these stereotypes, because I've also come across cases where the opposite is true.

4. Limited observance/selective memory/limited recall ability. All these three things can explain why people who hold certain stereotypes are adamant that they are true. If you hold a certain belief to be true, you are more likely to observe things which reinforce that belief.

One Little Caveat

How do we define a "bad driver"? Or a "bad tipper"? Or a "promiscuous person"? Normally, this would be a debate in and of itself, but "What is a bad driver?" is not the question posed by this thread. Fortunately, for the purpose of this discussion we can qualitatively define these as:

Bad Tipper - who tips x% less than average;
Bad Driver - who scores y% less than average on a make-believe "Driving Skill Assessment";
Promiscuous person - who has z% more sexual partners than average.

Conclusion

So, what do you guys think?
-Do stereotypes exist because they tend to be true?
-At point would you say, "Hey, x% of people in this group fit this stereotype so its true." 20%? 50%? 99%? Never?

A less volatile statement would be "stereotypes usually have a grain of truth".

Of course it's always important to keep in mind that people shouldn't be judged solely by stereotype.

people say "black people are good at basketball" but in reality a majority of good basketball players are black, but not all black people are good basketball players.

They exist because they're anecdotally true. We all know someone through someone or something that fits the stereotypes. It doesn't mean the majority fit it, it just means we can know someone who does.

I think "men are promiscuous" might be a better stereotype. Judging by the gay relationship thread, the percentage of people who fit your stereotype is close to zero! I'd be interested to hear your anecdotal evidence.

If this is true at all, which I don't believe, the only reason it would be true is because stereotypes influence the behavior of the people being stereotyped...

For every stereotypical behavior I've seen from a specific gender or race, I've seen an exception. I've also seen stereotypical behavior that's supposedly exclusive to a certain gender or race perpetuated by other genders and races. I'm gonna have to say no they don't tend to be true.

You say you know some specific examples that reinforce stereotypes. Now ask are most women that you know bad drivers? Are most black people that you know bad tippers? Are most gay people that you know promiscuous?

If the stereotype tends to be true, then it has to apply to the majority of those people.

And this thread will not end well. Just resign yourself to that.

Gay, 9 1/2 year relationship, never cheated. With one dude since 17. I know I know, I'm an exception. Just thought I would make a post as useless as the OP.

2. Contentious stereotypes tend to be those which paint the population in a negative light e.g. "Chinese people are good at math" - no one would have a problem with that though it may or may not be true.

This isn't true at all. Expecting someone to be good at something because of their ethnicity is still ignorant and offensive. "Oh, you're black, you're great at athletics I take it?"

The problem with your theory here is that you already seem to be viewing the world through the lens of several stereotypes. A woman driving well shouldn't ever be considered a "case".

I agree to be perfectly honest.

I think it's foolish to blanket define a particular subset or minority or whatever with a certain set of characteristics, that's definitely short sighted.

But at the same time these stereotypes are not just created - they are social phenomena that arise from somewhere - they are derived from and based on something that commonly is re-occuring.

So far I'm more interested on the reactions at this thread. Not very civil, as I expected.

Stereotypes tend to fallacies if taken as true.

This thread is a bad idea. We should probably not be having this thread.

...But you know the Minnesotan soccer mom stock character that sometimes shows up on TV shows? They exaggerate the accent, but the rest is very real.

Are you white?

White people can't jump
White people can't dance
White people love mayo

etc.

This thread is also a potential minefield.

Can't dance?
True. However out of those, the only prevalent one I hear "often" is "white people can't dance". And that is usually coming from some...less enlightened individuals. But again, the point here though is that none of those things listed are necessarily "bad" or to be shunned for. Women and minorities have it much worse.

Hopefully someone can attempt to answer this with reasons/rationale soon:

-At point would you say, "Hey, x% of people in this group fit this stereotype so its true." 20%? 50%? 99%? Never?

edit- and I don't mean 'true' as in computer logic 'true' - which is either 0% or 100%.

C'mon OP. You cant just create a thread that will potentially lead to bannings or heavy criticism and not actually name some stereotypes of your own.

Its like dangling some beef jerky from an electric wire while you eat your own batch safely in the security of your own home, not sharing with anybody.

You want to create a controversial thread? Well then be controversial yourself. None of this play it safe crap. You obviously have feelings that some of these stereotypes have a fair amount of truth to them. Which ones would you say you agree with? Lets ask YOU the questions first and see if GAF agrees with them. ;)

Fuck, man. I can't even get into this. This is the type of thread that will someday get me perma banned. So ignorant and absurd.

Notice how all your stereotypes are against minorities? I can't even think of a single stereotype for a white person.

uh, I can think of a ton, maybe because I'm not white.

White people love soft inoffensive guitar music
White people can't dance
White people can't jump
White people can't educate their children (pretty common sentiment in many Asian households, from what I gather)

I can keep going, some of these are obviously offensive
