The video wasn't really that surprising since he is classified as a psychotic which means loss of contact with reality but well at least a lot of fans enjoyed it.
Maybe some of you would enjoy this Pyro video, it is a touching well made story and the Pyro is really adorable

the insight you were supposed to absorb was that the guy is batshit insane. apparently in his mind he sees himself being helpful and playing with people in a fantasy-like experience...while in real life, he's BBQing shit.
They actually put you in the mind of the Pyro. If that's not "insight" into the class and "why" he's doing the things he does, I don't know what is.

They do what they enjoy. So in the course of making games (TF2), they discovered something else that they like to do that the community for the most part enjoys. This is why what they do actually do, is so good. They're constantly passionate about it.

Yeah, it's pretty clear that Pyro does the job because Pyro's freakin' nuts. Pyro is living in his own little world.
The series isn't about going that deep into the merc's backgrounds. It's about who they are, not why they are (with a minor exception for the Scout, who's enough of a blowhard that he can't be taken at his word anyway).

and none of those questions are in any way relevant? who the hell asks why someone in a video game is insane? because (s)he is?
the character itself is supposed to be a question mark to be left to the imagination. where's the fun in changing that aspect? what's the value-add? you know all you need to know about him/her/it.
Deliberately held off on viewing it until I rewatched each entry, and I'm pretty pleased I did. Worth the wait, Valve really hit it out of the park with this one.
There were a million ways to do this wrong, yet it rendered perfect justice to the character and its madness. No braindead unmasking scene to artificially inflate the video's hype, fitting aesthetic and tone, perfect balance between the comical and the macabre, no frame went to waste... it all just works marvelously.

The entirety of the Pyro's character is that he's an insane childish mystery man who brutally murders people while mumbling.

Why would I care about that? This isn't Neon Genesis Evangelion. I got to literally see what the Pyro sees. I can't say that about the other Meet The... videos.

I think this is magnificent. I've watched it half a dozen times, keep spotting new animation details and background stuff. Its beautifully made, clever and very funny.
