Supreme Court to rule on healthcare law today [Update: Upheld whole law]

Without the Mandate it is not sustainable in the least and will have to be majorly reworked or it will drive the nation into debt and insurance companies out of business. For instance: pre-existing conditions are still covered but you don't have to carry insurance so you can wait til you get sick and go buy insurance.

That said, maybe these idiots who proposed the legislation should think about whether it is constitutional before they push it through. If they had made a tax increase the size of the penalty and allowed people with insurance to write it off it wouldn't be an issue. This is on the people who penned the bill.

They did. And most constitutional scholars think it IS constitutional. And have always thought it was constitutional.

Can't find thepost, but in the other thread, 21 of the top constitutional scholars in the country, all members of a political think tank, were polled about this issue. 19/21 thought the mandate was constitutional, but 13/21 thought the mandate would be overturned by the courts.

That means at least 11 out of 21 of the top constitutional scholars in the country think the Supreme Court will strike down a constitutional law because of ideological hacks on the bench.

The question of constitutionality has never been a serious topic for debate until republicans decided to pursue every possible course of action to sabotage Obama's presidency, even at the expense of their own legislative goals. And it's only a topic for debate because the court is extremely conservative and has 2 or 3 far-right ideologues whose rulings seem to fall more in line with their political identifications than an objective analysis a judge is supposed to provide.

Which think tank is this?

Looking forward to losing my health care today. I'm on my father's since the age limit was extended due to a part of this "evil" plan.

I hope they strike down the mandate and the rest of the law stays, so while the super expensive provisions remain in tact without healthy people to pay for it all every insurance company collapses under its own weight and we can finally do the only thing that makes sense: single payer.

Side bonus: Kosmo unemployed

On the one hand, I don't like seeing conservatives/Republicans politically happy, so I want it to hold.

But on the other, I want it to fail so we can get rid of this insurance industry handout and focus on single payer. However, I'm certain if it fails, we'll never see insurance reform for another generation.
Besides that magical "tort reform" that Republicans tout like the second coming of Christ.

More like Kosmo's kids pay for all of us, since he would like them to work on the farm.

+1 for them striking down the entire thing but I hope that 90% of it gets gutted in which blocks any of it from going into effect. Businesses will boom if this happens because finally we won't this cloud hanging over our heads.

The fact that a law Republicans don't agree with can be pushed to the supreme court and rejected because the majority of the supreme court are Republicans, just doesn't sit well with me.

They stole the election in 2000 this way and passed a law to allows corporations to steal all future elections for Republicans as well. It's disheartening.

Yea, it's easy to say "well if this fails we'll just fight for singlepayer" but think of all the shit that needed to happen for this piece of shit to pass.

It wasn't Republicans who sank single-payer, it was good old boy Democrats like Ben Nelson, Joementum, and, apparently, Barack Obama. Republicans weren't going to vote for any healthcare bill. But Democrats had 60 votes in the Senate and this was the best they could do.

Unless someone seriously sees Dems getting 65-70 votes in the future, single-payer ain't happening any time soon.

Thanks for the expert analysis about businesses and stuff. I can't wait until finally we won't this cloud hanging over our heads.

yeah man, this'll fix our economy right up, and you just know the uninsured will be better off too amirite

The age limit no longer applies to me, but for God sakes please keep the part about getting rid of the preexisting condition clause.

Let me guess, you're one of those people who think if we eliminate taxes on businesses they'll use the savings to hire more people right?

There are some good things in the law, but there are bad things too. I don't think they'll rule the whole law unconstitutional.

The thing I hated the most about the law was the way it was passed. I wish they would have done more to get more bipartisan support and I really didn't like the way not a single person in Congress could be bothered to actually read the bill and know what was in it.

Nope. However, businesses (such as the place I work at) have been in a hiring freeze due to the impending costs of benefits through our insurance provider. Once the monkey is kicked to the curb, businesses should spend because they'll know their budgets.

I expect the unrevised GDP to be instantly revised due to the cloud and stuff

And the GDI to be revised downward after its upward revision.

lol. Businesses aren't hiring because there is no demand. This stuff isn't hard, chief.

Obama wanted a single payer system but tried to compromise with Republicans... by giving them what they wanted. The individual mandate.

Little did he know that the only thing they want is to sabotage his presidency. It doesn't matter if he passes something they originally supported.

Really? Obama should've known that because that's what Eric Cantor said like, in the first week of his Presidency ("our goal is to make Obama a one-term President"). His naivete has been well documented by now, but maybe it should be reiterated. He believed his own bullshit and got suckered by these guys.

what is wrong with how it was passed? it was passed with a majority in the house and a super majority in the senate

(I don't support the bill, but that is an odd reason)

The individual mandate survives as a tax according to SCOTUS blog?

Surely the blame lies in the camp of Obama, who has always held the principle of bipartisanship high (also prior to his presidency), and not by the republicans who are not actually proposing policy, but simply opposing any and all policy "from the other guy".
