Ugh, I had the willpower to say no to the minecraft set because it seemed hard to create a cool display without buying tons of them, but a good portal set would break me... :(

Well I went ahead and bought the LEGo TIE Fighter and X-Wing, going to build them a bit later. I also bought 5 of the series 7 minifgiures, I'll let you guys/gals know what I get.

Yeah, that's what I was referencing. I'm saying it's a shame they rejected it because it's more appealing than some grey room from Portal.

The Portal license has a lot of neat things that can be done with it, not just random grey rooms. They could sell a set that was nothing but the Weighted Companion Cube and it would probably sell better than the Minecraft set.

While out today, I grabbed Hillside House (just for MOC parts really). While I was at Toys R Us, they had Echo Base on sale for $66 and change. Very nice price for a big set like that, but I did not grab it.

And strangely, it looks like Target has marked UP the Lighthouse Island. It was ringing up nearly $50, and shows as $44 or so on the site. Very strange, as it is usually $40 there and many on here reporting it is being clearanced at their Targets.

I've noticed recently that the prices on some sets at Target have actually increased. You know something is odd when Lighthouse Island is cheaper at TRU than it is at Target!

Did you see any Monster Fighter sets at Target?

At my Targets they are on an endcap with LOTR sets, none were in the actual Lego aisle. Sometimes I find them on an internal endcap opposite the board games, sometimes it is an exterior endcap opposite the videogames/DVDs. I picked up the Hearse from Target on Father's Day. :)

Yeah the Lighthouse set was "clearanced" to 42 or something even though some dumbass employee left the old price on the shelf and it's clearly 39.99 there. Dunno what's up with that.

At my Target they had Monster Fighters on the endcap with a plastic case display of some of the sets.

TRU had them months ago but dat TRU tax...

No Monster Fighters at Target yet. I know that BN is going to get them soon though. I think I am going to hold off on the Monster sets for a while, but the Haunted House will be mine as quick as it can be after release.

Any way to get B&N coupons without having a membership? I want to pick up Uruk-Hai Army, and getting it for $25 instead of $30 would be irresistible. And as a former longtime Borders employee, I try to avoid shopping at B&N as much as possible.

They send email coupons pretty regularly. You can also check coupon sites for them as well. Lately they have moved to unique coupon codes that only work once, so getting the emails is probably the best bet.

Keep in mind though that the member coupons are better than the non member ones. Like the non member one is for 15% off but the member one is 20% or more. And you usually get coupons in the mail. Got a bunch of 20% off coupons the other week in the mail.

As soon as an inventory of that set hits I'm gonna order parts to make it in sand blue, I can't imagine it costing mote than $20, standard bricks are generally pretty cheap.

I am curious to see the modifications but...

I don't like the green either.

I will wait to see the set in person before passing judgement on anything.

So I started another Modular MOC tonight. Not sure what it is going to be, but added an extra challenge of making it a corner. I know I am going to run out of longer beam bricks before I finish it. Dammit.

No idea what it is going to be, I will do the interior after I finish the exterior. Thinking of making it a book store or something. If I had the right pieces, I would love to make a Flynn's Arcade MOC.

I did manage to get the door offset enough with a spinning plate to have it line up with a wing plate. Using some 1x1 bricks with grip bars sticking out (the thing that there is a plethora of on Tower Bridge) to stop it from spinning. But by a happy coincidence, I got it where I could have bricks cross onto the regular plates and lock into place. Now, getting the top of the door to line up will be the next challenge.

This is a first pass. And I did as much on the sidewalk as I could to get it under the steps.

Phony, how much free time do you have on your hands? Seriously. You post here a TON and then you got all these modules like, every other day.

I work 40 hrs a week, but have no extracurricular activities besides movies/TV and building while I watch those. I just happened to be off most of last week and this weekend, which gave me LOTS of time. But I would say I spend a few hours a day building or taking apart stuff. Even on work days.

so did you disassemble your cafe to get started on the new moc?

Nope. Cafe is still standing. It aint going away anytime soon. Gotta finish disassembling the Millenium Falcon, X-Wing, Y-Wing, and TIE Fighter sets soon though. Want to raid those for parts. The Imperial Shuttle and Modulars are kind of permanent for now. And of course the Death Star stays for a long time. Tower Bridge was a great display piece, but it is the gift that keeps giving for MOC parts. Too many great small pieces to ignore. And since what I seem to like building are modular buildings, I want to keep adding to them.

I will eventually get around to making that old school space MOC I thought about weeks ago. Just have to figure out what theme I want to stick to. Thinking of making a big Space Police station or something. Not sure.

You should make that modular be a toy store or gardeners store.

Grand Emporium has a Toy Store on the third floor already. I have thought about a garden or hardware store, but that would need a lot of tools to put on the wall.

A book store would be a nice add on though, which is what I am leaning towards. And it would compliment a cafe quite well.

Is there a good way of getting enough pieces for a custom modular-like house without paying that kind of price? Went to the Lego store in King of Prussia but they mostly had 2x4's and didn't really offer me what I wanted. Can't shell out for a 125+ kit but would like to build something to display all the mini-figures I've collected.

Bricklink is your friend in this case.

Actually, 2x4s would be quite good for mini fig displaying. Easy to layer and build into stair cases for figures.

As for modular houses, really the best thing is to buy an extra modular set and use it for parts. It is expensive, but gives you incredible price per brick. I have bought a few Apple Tree House sets for MOC parts, but really buying a secondary modular would give me more pieces that would be beneficial and for a better price. Thinking of ordering a second Grand Emporium for that reason alone. It has those massive clear wall pieces for large windows, and has the most individual window pieces of any modular that I can tell. Also, the sides of the building without windows are larger than other modulars, so you get more longer beams to use as well. On top of that, it has the largest sidewalk area, so you get more dark grey tiles to use as well. Not to mention it is three floors, so you get more flat 1xWhatever pieces for layering your floors.

Side bonus: bendable rods for doing whatever with, and a support beam to make another billboard.

TLDR: Once I get Pet Shop and finish off the in print modular collection, I will be ordering a second Grand Emporium to scrap for parts.

I'm wracked with indecision.

Should I get the rare 4184 Black Pearl staring me in the face, thus making my downward spiral into looking for a rare Queen Anne's Revenge my next target?

Or should I get the 7965 Millennium Falcon making it my first Star Wars set & making me open to collecting the rest but I'm not that a big a fan of Star Wars but I like the MilFal.

The Falcon is an awesome build, and almost universally loved on here.

However, the Black Pearl and all the POTC stuff seems to be on the way out, so your window for that and the Queen Anne's Revenge are shrinking faster than the window for the Falcon.

Yeah, I guess once I started looking at Bricklink it would be more cost effective to get a modular. Damnit. I have no idea how one is built so I have nothing to really go off for building ideas.

Edit:

I have a little while anyway, my awesome g/f got me the 7865 Millenium Falcon for my birthday.

As for PotC ships, Target near me (Lehigh Valley, PA) are starting to clearance them out. Currently at 100-ish. If I can snag them for 60-80 I'll probably get one.

The modular buildings and especially Tower Bridge will give you the best bang for the buck out there. Just be warned, once you start down the dark path of the modulars, forever will they dominate your destiny. Consume you they will!

I know and this thread doesn't help either. It all started with the silly mini-figures series 6. I was like 'oh these are cute.' and then I bought a 6 dollar creator set. Now I'm doing Fill-a-cup at Lego stores and hunting down deals for Lego.

Oh, you have not gotten the bug yet. Trust me. All it takes is your first mega set and you are done for. I have gone on for months about the evils the Fire Brigade, but it is the truth. I had collected Lego as a kid in the 80s, but was out of the game until January this year. I picked up the new (Se)X-Wing and TIE Fighter models and got the itch. Then I grabbed the Imperial Shuttle and was spoiled by mega sets. But then I got Fire Brigade and it was all over for me. Now all my money goes towards Lego sets. I need more, more, MORE! Just more sets for parts I may or may not need to build some random thing in my brain. And I never have the parts I want, so I must buy more!

And I said I would not get addicted to the mini fig series, and I was soooo wrong.

But really, be afraid of dipping your toes into the modular series. Be very afraid. Once you go to the big sets, there is no going back.

stop fear mongering :p
go and get the fire brigade Hero ;)

I have done the worshipping of the set long enough. It has become kind of a joke how much I would recommend the set. I am at the point now where I will encourage everyone to get it (just as before), but now will also warn them of going down that path.

Actually, has anyone on here gotten a modular just to see what the fuss is about and not bought another one or been tempted to get another one? I am curious who is impervious to their charms.

the correct answer here is both, trust me, I have both

I'm dieing for a good LEGO sale soon.

There are a ton of sets I want now that I'm not ready to pay full price for.

Yeah, I'm sticking with sales for my Lego fix at the moment. Got a 10% voucher and £5 worth of points to spend by the end of the month so I'll treat myself to something soon.

The Haunted House will be an exception.

Indeed. I'll get the Minecraft set once it gets in-stock again, but I really want R2-D2, The Black Pearl, and maybe even Hogwarts (I was down on the set before, but it actually looks pretty nice apart from the stickers).

I know those last 2 probably aren't going to be around for much longer so I'm hoping for a BOGO sale somewhere soon.

How come MEGA BLOKS & LEGO both have the PotC license? I see a crappy Black Pearl done by them in the same store.

I think megabloks had the license for POTC movies 2 and 3 but let it expire before the fourth movie, the MB pearl is probably old stock from that.

It seems to me that there was some kind of deal with disney (and this is just speculation) that bundled prince of persia and the pirates license into one graball super deal.

Today I had a Sprint Development class with LEGO!!!!

Unless the UCS R2-D2 is in one of its display positions, are the legs supposed to be a little bit janky? They just sort of flop around if you pick R2 up.

Yes. Not great. Was considering fixing them in the 3-legged position (plus he doesn't lean back enough) but not sure where to start, so I'm waiting for the wider community to put some mods out there.

I already noticed that flipping the the green and yellow circle pieces that attach to R2's head (so the studs point down and are touching that black circle piece inside) - actually allows the head unit to spin smoother/faster and doesn't seem to wobble.

Push the little brown rod down, so the end is as deep as it can go and then attach the head.

Sounds very dirty without context. :)
