Then...who?

Her? IDK, he never said it was form TASM

I still prefer Emma, she's much more petite and actually looks like a high-school student

Agreed. People who say Doc Ock's arc wasn't handled better than Connors' are just being delusional or really hate the Raimi films that much to ignore any good thing about it.
Wait, who the hell has said that? Doc Ock is still one of the best executed comic book villains in a long while, imo. Especially visually, Raimi nailed the tentacles look.

So I'm almost definitely seeing this tomorrow - is there a GAF consensus? Is it any good?

I have no expectations other than it being better than 3

I want to see this, but something about Garfield just bugs me. I can't even put my finger on it. I just can't imagine the guy as Spiderman.

He can't be any worse than Tobey was as Peter Parker right GAF? Right?

He's awesome as Peter. Go see it.

I felt so awkward during the scene of Peter asking Gwen out. I was like "For God's sake someone call cut! CUT CUT!"

I was kinda thinking the same way but it worked for the female quotient. Overheard a row of them saying "Awwww. So cuuuute!"

I thought it was pretty good. A solid 7.5/10. I just watched SM1 the other day and I felt that ASM established its own identity and avoided looking like an imitation.

The score was pretty awful, I must say. It made the film feel really, really cheap.

I guess that's what happens when James Horner actually tries to compose new music.

Best part of the film were the two batman trailers in front of it.

I kid, but that was funny. I liked this film a lot. They handled the origin "moments" better than raimis spiderman, but there was a lot of small stuff that irked me.

The whole notion of not being able to get what you want and learning to sacrifice your own pursuits for the greater good is a whole lot different from "blow up the city." Or in this movie's case,
turn everyone into lizards

One of those plots has a theme and an emotional throughline. The other is just cartoonish.

You're completely conflating plot, theme and motivation. Connors and Dr Ock were motivated by the same thing: using science to improve the quality of life for mankind. Thematically you may prefer Spider-man 2 but in terms of character motivation and objective they are identical.

Okay so... some thoughts on the film.

1. Overall, I enjoyed it. But I think I only really enjoyed like 25% of the movie because a lot of it is bloated with stuff I've seen in the trailers or stuff we already knew was going to happen.

2. I thought the pacing was pretty bad, but you all know that by now. It's really weird... The movie feels bloated with all of the plots trying to converge (Peter's Parents, Peter's angst, Dr. Connors, Uncle Ben teaching Peter to be a better man, Peter's relationship with Gwen, Captain Stacy and his relationship with Peter, Connor's becoming the lizard, ... oh and Peter eventually becomes Spider-Boy). BUT the strange thing for me is that the real IMPORTANT scenes seem to just zip by and we're mostly poorly handled in my opinion.

3. For example, the spider bite (that kicks this whole character off) felt kinda anti-climactic and just happened in the middle of scene. Uncle Ben's death was so poorly done, I can't believe they left it that way. The guy who stole did so in a non threatening way and only seemed to steal a handful of cash. Then he bumps into Uncle Ben and his gun pops out, which causes Ben to... try and grab it? Why? The thief would've probably just run away and not hurt anybody unless they intervened and acted AGGRESSIVELY towards him like Uncle Ben.
Then, he gets shot on accident? What? I think whoever wrote that scene just... missed the entire point of that piece of Spider-Mans origin.

4. I thought starting in Luchadore/underground wrestling was a better way to explain why he wore a costume/mask at first, where he got (some) skills fighting, where he got his goofy name from or why he even needed a name. In ASM, he just seems to feel compelled to buy all of this stuff online (which I mean like... did they just Spider-Man costumes online or did he make them himself?).

5. It was nice seeing him not being able to control his powers at first. I always feel like super strength is one of spider-man's powers that people often forget (he's kind of OP lol).

6. The Lizard, looked kind stupid and was not really that compelling. I was hoping that they wouldn't keep his original origin/plan to turn everyone into lizards since that's cheesy as fuck by they did.. And I don't think that really fit with the tone of the movie.

7. I'm watching a movie where old handsome people pretend to be young awkward people...

8. So Flash want's to be buddy's with Puny Parker when his Uncle dies but has no problem kicking the shit out of him even though his parents are dead too? Where does he draw the line?

9. A young, boring Aunt May? Why? She's one of the tentpole characters in Spider-Mans story, why but her in the background?

10. There's sort of an imbalance with Spidey's one-liners/quips in this movie. Overall it's a fairly bleak and serious movie (once Uncle Ben dies) outside of the Twilight romance. So it comes across as strange for him to be saying "Oh that suuucked" or "Don't...Make..Me.. Hurt..You!" in a fight in one scene like a cartoon character and then apparently hurt and human in the next scene.
I thought it worked well with the car thief since Spidey clearly outclassed the guy and he was under no pressure. But while fighting the Lizard and getting (apparently) beat the fuck up? I dunno.

11. The crane scene. Cheesy as hell and ridiculous that someone thought THAT was the way they were going to have the city show support for Spider-Man. Even though, I thought the scene looked kiiiinda cool, it was just so... stupid.

I think a better cheesy scene of the same ilk would've been:
Spider-Man leaves Captain Stacy on his way to Oscorp. Cop shoots his leg and starts to falter. Spider-Man tries swinging but ends up slipping due to the pain in his leg and hits the ground. The crowd parts around him and watches as he limps towards the building. Spider-Man stumbles again and goes down one knee, thinking that he can't go on has pushed himself too far/is in over his head. The onlookers see that he is trying to help and clearly wounded. The kid he saved earlier runs up to him and hands him something (could be whatever, like a drawing he did of Spider-Man saving him, or something of sentimental value to the kid). The kid says "Take this Spiduh Man. It'll make you strong" (call back to the car scene, though now their roles are reversed). Spider-Man realizes that he's the only one with the power to stop Connors and protect the city. At this point he becomes aware that he isn't just doing this to protect his loved ones but also to protect everyone in the city (cut in an Uncle Ben talking power, responsibility flashback here). He thanks the kid and finds the strength to rush off towards Oscrop.
Fin.

I think the sequel will be much better, but right now this was only "okay" for me.

Gwen was damn hot in SM3. I could almost understand why Peter acted like a total fucking idiot in SM3.

I used to think so but I watched Spidey 3 last night and damn, Stone completely smokes
Bryce Howard. And honesty Dunst gets hated
on here a lot but I thought she looked damn good in Spidey 3.

I felt so awkward during the scene of Peter asking Gwen out. I was like "For God's sake someone call cut! CUT CUT!"
So you don't like having real life interaction in a movie?

I want to see this, but something about Garfield just bugs me. I can't even put my finger on it. I just can't imagine the guy as Spiderman.

He can't be any worse than Tobey was as Peter Parker right GAF? Right?
The one thing everyone agrees on, even those who hate the movie, is that he's an excellent Peter Parker as well as Spidey.

They should introduce Felicia Hardy to compete with MJ in later movies

Black Cat was my female superhero crush when I was a kid

The 3D turned out pretty weak overall. While the CG fight scenes and traversal scenes were spectacular, a huge chunk of the movie was cardboard cutouts and dialog. It's ironic that the aerial shots of skyscrapers had more depth.

If they want my advice they should use wider lenses and get closer to their subjects. This will yield more dynamic depth of field from near to far, and prevent the harsh cutout layers. Hollywood needs to stop relying so much on long lenses when shooting 3D. Those lenses don't work, at all. They're fine for 2D, but what's good for 3D is different.

The score was pretty awful, I must say. It made the film feel really, really cheap.

I guess that's what happens when James Horner actually tries to compose new music.

Yeah, I'd prefer him being a hack again instead of writing overbearing scores. Christ, that shit was intrusive.

There's one more thing that bothered me and that's the fact that when they see this giant Lizard man in the streets, there's not as much of a freak out as I was hoping for. It's like everyone in their movie world was a-ok with believing a giant lizard dude was possible and wrecking shit in New York. Now, this would be ok IF this movie was in the same universe as the Avengers, as the people of New York would be familiar with the fact that super heroes, aliens, and gods exist, but since there's no shown connection it feels weird. Any one else feel that way?

Oh, I like how movie was touted as 'the untold story will be revealed' except it isn't. terrible marketing
Is Pete's dad covered in Spider-Man? I just watched it the other day but I don't remember anything. His dad's role seemed all new to me.

They don't mention his parents at all in Spider-Man 1, or any of the Raimi movies if I'm remembering correctly.

I cringed at Peter Parker binging. How much did Microsoft paid for those scenes. :-|

I like this movie more than Raimi's. People actually acted in this one.

Anyone else want to know how Concerned Dad managed to free himself from his car just fine, but apparently didn't bother to get his son out?

What a great dad.

Solid 3.5/5 for me. Acting was great for the main characters, action scenes and web swinging were excellent. We already knew they story of course, so it's all in the telling and I enjoyed it. Lizard's effects & animation were cool. It was a bit slow at times, but overall I really enjoyed it.

BTW here are some shots of the deleted scenes - taken from SHH

* "Do you have any idea, what you really are? If you want the truth, Peter, come and get it! Do you think what happened to you, Peter, was an accident?": these lines weren't in the movie, as well as the entire scene, where Peter encounters both Ratha and Curt Connors in his sewer lab. I suppose, it's long enough + if Ratha survives during the fight, then not only it explains a few plot holes, but also - how a particular character figured out Spidey's identity in the very end of the film.

* The scene where Lizard enters Midtown High was completely changed: in the final version of the film there are no two girls present, no violence, no Lizard taking girls into the corner of school's bathroom, licking one of them and smiling, saying a few words and then chewing them (like in the San Diego Comic-Con footage). Even his visual appearance is not the same (definitely toned down, less beast-like and scary).

I liked spidys new outfit, its very glossy and the web swinging looked phenomenal at night. They really knocked it out of the park on that aspect.

As previously stated, the pacing was odd. Lizard coming out of nowhere to the high school was just odd. I guess a 2 1/2 out of 4

Now I'm starting to wonder if they cut a few scenes where Peter sees there's a reward for a picture of the Lizard creature which would explain why he set up his camera in the sewers. Otherwise, it made no sense other than to show Connors who Spider-Man was.

I doubt Sony would release a Directors Cut. The story elements that got cut are probably being put into the sequel instead.

I'm convinced there were last minute changes to the origins.

Anyone else want to know how Concerned Dad managed to free himself from his car just fine, but apparently didn't bother to get his son out?

What a great dad.
One would assume he got out of the car to see what the hell was going on and told the kid to stay or something.
