The LEGO Thread

My oldest daughter turns 6 this week so I took a few days off to spend some time with her.

Today was our first "daddy/daughter" day in ages with just the two of us. She may have gotten a little bit spoiled. Unbelievably she chose the castle of her own volition. Can't wait to crack it.

We spent about three hours working on Olivia's house and she was able to do 95% of it on her own. Love the detail in the individual rooms-especially the kitchen. Strange that the parents have no bedroom.

Our local Lego store had a ton of Fire Brigades in stock....I'm getting closer and closer to pulling the trigger on that one.

After becoming very jealous of the people who live near newly-opened LEGO stores, I broke down and used Pick A Brick (with a handful of BrickLinked pieces) to reconstruct the LEGO Store mini model. I'm very pleased to have it. Such a fun little structure.

I also picked up one of the LEGO-esque iPhone cases from SmallWorks. I'm pretty impressed with its quality and its compatibility with real LEGO bricks.

I have some questions for Lego GAF. I have been watching a bunch of youtube reviews and videos of some interesting Lego sets, coming across most of them from interest in the LoTR sets. I'm not new to Lego's, owned some generic ones when I was kid and even had one of the first Lego Mindstorms sets. I've been trying not to get pulled into these sets but some of them are just too enticing for me.

I was thinking of dipping my toes in with the LoTR Shelob Attacks set. It's only $20 bucks on Amazon and most of the LoTR sets are still available on Amazon. Is that a good place to start?

Secondly I notice the price on these sets can go up fast because seemingly these sets go out of stock real quick. Is it wise to jump on a set quickly if you are thinking about it? Where do you purchase your sets? For instance most of the ToysRus around me have closed and Walmart doesn't seem to stock these sets i'm looking at. Amazon has a lot of third party marked up prices but i'm noticing the official Lego Store online doesn't have the sets i'm looking at in stock right now but are allowing you to order them and they will ship in about 30 days. They aren't marked up, but you do have to pay shipping, do you all buy from them alot?

Lastly besides the LoTR sets i've really been looking at these Monster Fighters sets. I'm a fan of classic monsters and halloween and the thought of having these sets displayed for halloween is really awesome to me. Does anyone have opinions on these sets? These are the sets that are out of stock but you can still order and get them in 30 days. I really like that Vampire Castle and the Ghost Train and have saw some pictures of a Haunted House coming out in September and it just looks so awesome.

If anyone can talk me out of getting into yet another thing to collect spend money on i would also appreciate that, thanks in advance.

Have that case myself. I had a Lego TARDIS on the back of mine for a long time. But I LOVE the Mega Man art on that one. Might go back to that case soon once I figure out what to make with it. The limited space is both wonderful and horrible. But limitations force creativity.

Anyways, picked up Helm's Deep and Weathertop tonight. After getting home very late from work, I put Weathertop together.

Small footprint. Easy to display in almost any place.

Also the only set (so far) to come with Nazgul. Ringwraiths. Neither living nor dead.
Also come with the newly designed horses, which are more posable now.

The interior detail to the set is kind of "meh."

However, the outside of the set is quite neat on display.

Overall: highly recommended. A very fun and interesting build, and very nice tiny lil display piece. To top it off, you get some really nice mini figs.

BONUS: ZERO stickers in the set. After the insane sticker-fest that was Moria, this was very nice.

You'll get better advice from others, but i started with a $20 Creator set and the next day went out and bought more sets. But the Creator set gets a lot of mileage, because it has 3-4 build instructions and the pieces are great for beginner MOCs. The themed sets have specific colors and as a beginner, I don't get inspired to disassemble really cool looking sets to make my own pos MOC, even though making MOCs is way more interesting and fun than just building by instruction. So in that sense, more "generic" sets with decent piece counts might get more for your money.

Also once you start a theme you will want to keep buying more of that theme. And then if you are limited by money, you might shy away from cool sets that you want just because they don't fit in with the themes you're collecting. Like I really want the LOTR and Monster sets but I don't have anything that fits it, like the Medieval or Castle themes. I'm afraid that once I buy one I'll start wanting other themes that fit with it. I've had my eye on the Medieval Market Village and think it would go great with the LOTR stuff.

Well, after spending the better part of trying to recreate a MOC of a Mini-Modular version of the Pet Shop, I have to admit defeat.

This is the set i was trying to duplicate:

I've found that I am unable to complete it without more information, mainly the interior structure and rear details. I was able to make the roof and the front and side of the middle section, but the VERY creative way the 3 windows are made, which I was able to make with the help of this old post:
I think it's just the normal spacing. The left end appears to have a smaller gap than the right end -- the right end is the stud end with the flat plate on top:

I just haven't been able to solve the problem of attaching those windows to the rest of the structure AND build the rear windows for that same floor. It was a lot of fun trying to figure it out, but the limited space requirements are killer.

For now I suppose I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed and hope LEGO comes out with another mini-modular set with the Pet Shop in it.

I'm back in the top 10 for the week on CUUSOO for my tumbler, sitting at #8 with +189 votes last week. Current tally is 2272...almost a quarter of the way there :/

Locals of Broken Hill woke up this weekend and rubbed their eyes in disbelief at the sight of a magical mystery surprise. A life-sized LEGO® Forest has risen from the red soil creating a colourful contrast against the iconic vibrant landscape.
Last seen surrounded by concrete in central Sydney, the Forest will now remain in Broken Hill’s red dust plains and blue skies of far-western NSW until July 12.
There are 15 of the famous LEGO ‘pine’ trees and flower sets that have been recreated to a 1:1 ratio of the original pieces, but supersized to be 66 times bigger to make you feel like you’re playing in your very own LEGO universe!
Their new home is the breathtaking Living Desert,a unique 2400ha reserve with spectacular views and numerous walking trails allowing any intrepid explorers to either get up close and personal with the Forest or climb to a vantage point and marvel at them from afar – both cases providing some amazing photography possibilities.

Attack on Weathertop is one of the nicer LOTR sets IMO but it's very flawed. The inside detail is a waste of time/bricks as is that separate little section. I think the most ridiculous thing is that you need to buy 3 Attack on Weathertops to get a full set of Wraiths...

Let me give you my take on it. Just speaking my opinion on this. :D

I was thinking of dipping my toes in with the LoTR Shelob Attacks set. It's only $20 bucks on Amazon and most of the LoTR sets are still available on Amazon. Is that a good place to start?

Yeah, I consider the $20 area to be a great place to start, in general. I don't are for LotR, so I can't help you with that. :)

I depends on the set and the popularity of it. Rule of thumb is that LEGO will produce the sets for at least a year, so you have some time to get them. If it is a Limited Edition, a good time frame might be 6 months. If you are looking at a Cuusoo-born set, then jump on it when you can.

Since I belong to the VIP club, I will save my bug purchases for that, as I don't feel so bad paying for shipping, and I get a tiny amount back. Otherwise, I go where the sales are, and Amazon is a good place to that. I also check the clearance areas at the local stores. TRU I stay away from, unless it is a great deal.

If anyone can talk me out of getting into yet another thing to collect spend money on i would also appreciate that, thanks in advance.

I started out with the Minifigs series. From there, went to Shuttle Expedition, and then the Modulars, and mini modulars. I want to get into the Creator houses, because the amount of detail is amazing, so that is next. I love the Monster Fighters, so those will be purchased by Halloween. I grew up on Star Wars, but really have no desire to collect the Lego sets, mainly due to the price increase, and limited space. Some sets are cool, but they need to mean something for me (B-Wing is awesome, and from the original trilogy, so I jumped on that). I love Marvel, but won't jump into those sets (might get Deadpool, though. Damn you Phonc!).

Also, Lego might say it will take 30 days for new stock, but I've seen them get stock quicker.

TL;DR:
want to save money? Go with Amazon or sales/discounts.
Is it a limited run? Jump on it ASAP.
Buying on sale usually negates the VIP bonus price-wise, unless they are exclusive sets thru Lego (modulars, etc).
I cannot comment on LotR, Marvel/DC, PotC, Dino, and most Star Wars, as I don't have interest in them.

Hope this helps. Welcome to the
supoort
group, and good luck!

I ordered all of the special pieces from S@H, and will probably bricklink the rest. Need to save some monies at the moment, as we are planning on hitting the closest Lego store in about a month.

I ordered 10 of each piece that are not on the PAB site, which was about 12$ after shipping. Didn't order the sticker, though.

ARAK-N3 model moving along. I got it walking now, and it's really awesome when it rolls and walks at the same time. It looks like it's ice-skating :) Now for some more styling touches and it will be ready for the final photosession.

Oh, and I call it Shagohod, as it reminds me of the metal gear precursor from MGS3 that also had some kind of tracked + walking capability.

It looks like biggyfries already took care of the link for you, so that's good.

In all, I think the bricks set me back around $60. Definitely more expensive than buying it at a store, but quite a bit cheaper than getting one off of eBay. Plus, I don't have to journey to an opening store, stand in line for hours, and hope that they don't run out of the sets before I get to the register.

Most of the bricks were available from the Pick A Brick site. If I remember correctly, I only had to use BrickLink to get the clear 1x1s, the clear 1x1s with the hole (that are holding the door handles), the clear discs on the roof, and a couple of pink 1x1 circles for the little Pick A Brick wall in the back of the store.

I also didn't get a sticker for the store's sign. I wanted to get a brick with the logo stamped on it, so I had to BrickLink that as well. Apparently it's a fairly rare piece as there were only a couple on BrickLink, and they were all in Europe (I'm in the U.S.). That one piece ran me about $5, but I'm glad to have a sticker-free set. Heck, that's arguably better than the "official" set.

Well, after doing Weathertop last night, I woke up to build Helm's Deep today.

A fun build, and minimal stickers (actually, the stickers can stay and still be useful in things) on the set. It is much larger than anticipated, and the unique nature of the build makes it a bit difficult to display properly.

And after finishing Helm's Deep and having dinner, decided to keep going on my second modular MOC. And I finally decided on a theme for it: The Corner Florist

I left handles sticking from the corner to attach whatever sign I make for it. That will also help obscure to blank area near the top of the door.

So I had to pillage my modular garden/park that I build last week, but I am feeling good about it. Gotta say, doing a corner door added a very unique and fun challenge to building. Now to figure out what details to add to the second floor. :)

Found on Eurobricks, the results of the Lego AFOL survey:

Dear LEGO® Fan community,

We hereby share top line, aggregated results of the LEGO Fan Survey which was conducted in May 2012.

Over 6.000 LEGO fans over the age of 13 participated in the survey. A majority of you who participated in the survey were above 18 of age with seven out of ten being between 18-44 years old. 14% of the respondents were women. When we compare this figure with previous studies, it indicates that more adult women are entering the LEGO hobby. The main occupation among you who took the survey were “computer/engineer/technical”, then “arts/design/media”, followed by “business/financial operations” and “education/training/library”. Close to half of you have a bachelor degree or more.

In general the data indicates that the joy of building was ingrained in you from early childhood. Thus, eight out of ten confirm that as children they really enjoyed coming up with solutions to problems. The data also suggests that you were not afraid of embarking in building activities that others would think of being a bit too challenging. Apparently, you had plenty of time for free play and for many, playing with LEGO elemets was a daily occurring activity. Surprisingly, at least to us, the numbers suggest that you did not make use of older siblings and friends to help you build with LEGO products. This to us suggests that you were self-motivated and did not need assistance or to be encouraged to play with LEGO products.

Among those of you who responded, LUG members and people who have participated in a LEGO fan club meeting or a convention seem to represent a smaller group. However, data suggest that there are many more fans who expect to participate in LEGO fan activities in the future. We can also see that there are quite a few who expect to organize or participate in events where the purpose is to show fan created work to non-LEGO fans. Thus, there seems to be lots of enthusiasm among LEGO fans and a great interest in taking part of fan organized activities. We guess that there is a direct link between the great work that so many LUGs are doing and then this great anticipation to engage and socially interact.

About your online LEGO hobby activities, nearly nine out of ten check out LEGO related online sites a couple of times per week or more. You mostly use LEGO related online sites to check out new LEGO products and MOCs and to read reviews of LEGO products. Many of you use LEGO related online sites to learn new building styles and techniques, to keep informed about good LEGO deals, and to hear the latest rumors or gossip. Fewer of you use LEGO related online sites to show your latest MOCs, to contribute to LEGO fans’ discussions and to get other fans’ input and help with things you are working on. Only very few use LEGO related online sites to find new friends.

Regarding the way you perceive LEGO products, most of you agree that you feel a personal connection with LEGO products and that you believe that LEGO products are best in class. Judging from your answers, you are very knowledgeable about LEGO products and many of your non-LEGO friends turn to you to get advice on LEGO products. Close to half of you who took the survey have played with LEGO products for more than 16 years. So, it is actually no surprise that others think of you as a great source of knowledge and experience.

Seven out of ten agree that they take great joy in showing and explaining LEGO models to people who are not actively involved in the LEGO hobby. Six out of ten agrees that he or she feels compelled to help a fellow fan if he or she asks for help on how to improve his or hers LEGO design. This to us indicates a general openness and willingness to share and exchange the deep knowledge and experience many of you possess.

We also asked you about the way you perceive your MOCs. While most of you would not be too worried if other LEGO fans disliked your MOCs, many of you agree that the opinions of other LEGO fans are important when judging your work and that a MOC has to live up to certain standards if it has to be appreciated by many LEGO fans. More than eight out of ten agree that winning a MOC award or having one’s MOC praised by other LEGO fans would potentially represent a very positive experience.

We are using the survey results to better understand the LEGO fan community and your relationship with the LEGO products in general. We would like once again to thank you for your participation.

With kind regards,

Jan Beyer, Community Operations Manager EU/Asia
James Foulds, Community Operations Senior Manager, Americas/Australia

Thanks Parrotbeak and Biggyfries. I really liked that Ghost Train and saw it sold out really quickly everywhere and was worried may not find it. I really feel the need to complete sets so if I started on a couple Monster sets yea it would make me mad if I couldn't complete it. I'm a big comic book fan but thats why i'm staying away from the superhero sets because i'd be wanting so many characters that wouldn't be made. Why I had to give up on minimates. From the sounds of it I should probably be able to still get the monster sets around October.

For now yea I think I will start with a couple LoTR sets since i'm a fan. I already ordered the Shelob Attacks set and may get the Gandalf set just because its sort of cheap. From there I guess I will decide to plunge full in and get that Helms Deep set or not.

To anyone collecting the LoTR sets does that Urak-Hai Army set compliment the Helms Deep set well or is it a pass?

The two sets are specifically designed to connect. After having assembled Helms Deep, I am very much looking forward to getting the Urak-Hai Army set (maybe 2) to expand on it. More figures to flesh out the battle is always good.

I haven't gotten the Uruk Hai Army set yet, but Helms Deep is a fun set. All I have gotten of the LOTR sets is Weathertop, Moria, and Helms Deep. Of those, I think Weathertop is the most fun build and the neatest little display piece. And you get Nazgul to boot.

To anyone collecting the LoTR sets does that Urak-Hai Army set compliment the Helms Deep set well or is it a pass?

The more Uruk you can get, the better, really. They do a decent job of making each Uruk somewhat individual, and I would say it does help with making it look like a battle scene.

I still say the LotR sets are overpriced by about $10-15, but I suppose licenses aimed at adult collectors carry a premium in the end.

I finished the Fire Brigade finally. It looks good! The second floor was a lot of fun, but I was running out of steam at that point in the build too. I prefer the Grand Emporium overall, but it was still a fun build. These modular sets really are the best Lego to display IMO. After I add the last 2 (Pet Shop and Town Hall), it will be a fairly large place to start displaying various mini figs and other sets like Batman/Avengers/UFO Defense among the town.

If I were to do a MOC building, I think it would be either a Bank or a Ice Cream Parlor. I have ideas in my head, but I'm not keen on tearing up existing sets to build them. A 2/3rd sized Ice Cream Parlor with an outdoor playground would likely be my first MOC because the bank would have to be pretty big.

Okay, I just have to say...

I liked Legos as a kid, a lot. I had a big coffee can full of them, and they were one of my favorite toys This was mid 80's, so all the cool themes weren't around yet. Eventually, I kind of forgot about them. I mean, I've always thought they were cool, but they haven't really been part of my life for decades.

Flash forward to the present day, I have a one year old son. He's still too young for Legos, but he'll be old enough before I know it, I'm sure. I will probably buy him a Duplo set before long.

But here's why I'm suddenly excited about Legos again. Kansas City just got a Lego store at the mall. Oh my God is it beyond cool. They have bins with all these different colors and shapes of bricks, and you can just fill a baggie and pay by the pound like it was dry goods or something. Some of the bins are all wheels or gears or antenna. Every set and theme/brand is there. It's such a cool place. I walked out after seeing it the first time the other day and I can't wait until he's old enough that we can go there all the time. Hopefully the store is still there by then, but as packed as it was, I bet it will be!

It almost makes me want to just build some crazy intricate thing on my own in the meantime to go in my office or something.

Do you know the part number for the Lego logo printed brick? I had done searches on Bricklink but I only came up with stickered pieces. I made my own Lego store by Bricklinking, using a sticker I made myself, but I would much prefer to have an official logo piece.

Picked up my first Team GB figure. Got the boxer which is the most likely sport event we're bound to do well in out of all the sport represented.

wow didn't know there was a ladder in the set, the set really resembles the scene in the movie

It'll probably run $200 like other flagships - LOTS of motors + IR stuff in that one.
Looks good, but compared to some custom made rock crawlers, this one really has low clearance, thanks to the way the wheels are attached. Can't wait to see how the new motors work though.

The wall on the left is even destructible. Press down on a lever in the back to send large chunks of the wall flying. Well, has far as it can at least. Sometimes it just collapses.

On the right side there is a trap door for Aragorn and Gimli to sneak out of, and a launch pad to toss them over to the steps.

I might take pics of the details in a few days, because there are lots of neat little touches throughout the set.

Should pick up the Urukai Army set, it's made to be connected to the rest of the Helm's deep set.

Should buy 10 Helm's Deeps so you can expand it more to scale. And then buy some Medieval Village sets to make the peasants packing into the fortress.

This is the LEGO logo tile I ordered for my mini store model.

http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=3068bpb214

Like I said, it's apparently a pretty rare piece. There only seems to be one on the site right now, and the seller mentions that it's stickered. The real deal, though--the one I got--is actually printed on the brick. When I ordered my piece a couple of weeks ago, I think that there were only three up for sale. Hopefully more end up on there eventually.
