Edit: double post. Sorry.

I'm not a rap fan. Can someone explain to me the difference between an album and a mixtape?

A mixtape isn't a traditional album, its usually a bunch of songs that for the most part, won't be on an actual album. And mixtapes are usually free as opposed to albums.

The one without text is Shrines by Purity Ring. That has a few amazing tracks and the rest is average.

I'm listening to Rose Island right now. The tone is sporadic but it doesn't matter. Loving the A$AP collab and Lisa.

New Gambino is decent. Fuck the haters.

Since I Left You is timeless. Also listened to their other stuff. (El Producto, At Last Alone, When I Met You). When I Met You was fun. At Last Alone had some meh to ok remixes. Didn't think much of El Producto.

My album of 2012 so far.

I've been listening to jazz-funk/jazz fusion (Roy Ayers, Herbie Hancock, etc.) for a while, and now I'm checking out Steely Dan for the first time.
I skipped to Aja, though:

I came across it totally randomly. Was using Redbull Radio at work and got bored and he came up. Listened to it for a while and liked it so went and looked him up.

I like a few songs off his newest one but I prefer the more traditional stuff.

Still so weird seeing this shit. I've mentioned it before, but I went to high school with this guy and his sister.

Haha, that's cool. What was he like?

Anyways, I finished my 100 fav albums for another site and thought I'd share here because I have been listening to most of these again, and I figured some of you would be interested. Have a look:

GAF should compile a definitive album list sometime, that would be fun.

Dirty Projectors - Swing Lo Magellan
The B-52s - The B52s
The Go Go's - Beauty and the Beat

Also listening to a lot of Fiona Apple for the first time. "Love Ridden" destroyed me first listen and is still destroying me.

Holy crap. Did you guys hear the St. Vincent track from her Record Store Day 7"?

It's amazing.

Grot

Top comment on youtube describes it perfectly:
Listening to St. Vincent is like being in a beautiful forest meadow. Animals are frolicking through the tall grass, the sweet aroma of the wildflowers graces your nostrils as the cool wind softly caresses your skin and the sun shines through the leaves, painting everything in glorious green hues. Everything is perfect. And then a fucking bulldozer busts through the trees, and everything is exploding and everything is on fire, and you don't know why but you fucking love it! You want it to burn!

This might be my favorite hip-hop mix tape this year no joke:

Hey guys, found a pretty cool album, you should all check it out. In a year's time, everybody will know of the band Channel Orange - I predict big things for these guys!

Not completely new but this album is still growing on me. Forgot about it a while.

And this album is just timeless for me, one of my favorite albums of this generation

Finally listened to it to see what the fuss is all about, and I quite like it.

Sure, no Clint Mansell is a shame, and he's clearly missed, but Graeme Crabb keeps it real imo. It's quite good, certainly has its moments and I'm quite happy accepting this as a new Poppies album. Keep living in hope of a real reunion though.

Ahhhh. Can't shake this damn music!

Were you cool with him and his sis?

Anyway can't wait for this to officially drop.
Haha, that's cool. What was he like?
3 days later....
sorry
We weren't best buds or anything but we were on a first name basis mostly because he was good friends with a few of my good friends (still is I think). His sister was in my stepsister's dance classes so I knew her a little too. He was an alright dude. Was always playing acoustic guitar/singing and he was good. I'm pretty sure I remember him mentioning his dad taught him. Jammed a couple of times with my friends' music thing at the time too.
