I'm not really an expert, but I'm pretty sure he was 'innovative' or fresh when he started out because he didn't bother with the 'I'm a hardcore drug dealer from the street' schtick everyone else did and that did completely change the genre.
He didn't just work with some good producers, he was/is one of the best. And the TV abortions are just a load of bullshit which ultimately means he makes better music.

I can never decide whether I prefer college dropout or late registration personally but if I had to suggest only 1 to someone else, it would be the latter. The sound is great with his drum patterns and samples accompanied by a string orchestra.
