Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

That's... how they sound! Isn't anything you imagine them sounding like just due to your own mistaken preconceptions?

I figured they would have sounded like the goblins from WoW, more maniacal. But I'm sure I will change my mind about it 10 seconds after starting a character and love it.

btw, what will pve end game be like? will they have raid dungeons?

There isn't PvE end game like WoW. There are dungeons that have two modes (Story Mode and Explorable mode, that is the equivalent of heroic, 5 people). At release there are 8 dungeons where you can go and clear, each one have loot and an armor set.
The challenge come from the Explorable Mode, that is almost the same dungeon you did in Story Mode but with different paths where each one its a different experience and different stuff happen, different bosses, stuff to do, etc .

Thanks to GW2 Downscale mode, you can go back to a Lv30 dungeon as a Lv80 and it will be challenging as the first time when you did it, tho of course you will have more stats in the gear and more skills point but it shouldn't be a big advantage

It was in the previous beta.

Oh cool, is more easy for me to have all in one big bag.

Oh cool, is more easy for me to have all in one big bag.

I seem to remember it was there ever since the very first beta, actually. It was one of the first options I turned on.

What WAS added to the BWE2 is the "sell all gray items" button. I find it funny that it was implemented before release, when it took WoW 7 years of retail to finally add it. Who knows, in seven more years they might add a "compact inventory" or even "see all as one bag" toggle.

This is, of course, highlighted even more thanks to the "send all collectibles to bank" added in BWE3, which was the one single thing I missed from the interface. Now I think I literally could not find anything to complain even if I tried.

All that is missing is a auto-sorter that automatically sorts the items to item type, level and so forth.

Well, they don't have that exactly, but you can get specialized bags, so that your items will automatically go into the bag of that type. So you can have a crafting bag for crafting materials, and equipment bag for weapons/armor, a junk bag for... well junk, and an invisible bag for stuff you don't want to show up when you go sell items to the vendor. There's probably more that I'm forgetting about.

Asura and Sylvari will be playable in the BWE AAAAAAH OMG SO MANY NEW POSSIBILITIES OVERWHELMING GAHHHHHHH

edit: let me just

Asura and Sylvari will be playable in the BWE

FOR REALSIES

SO EXCITED

I'd already planned to spend much of the next BWE to play around with character creation to come up with ideas for what to play on release, so this is really awesome for me. Going to try to avoid spoiling PvE content for myself since characters won't be carried through from beta to final.

I'm pretty sure that engineer or elementalist is going to be the class of my first character, but I need to try another few out to see if anything changes my mind.

(PS - hi! Another GAF newbie here, just got my account activated. I've been lurking the thread for months, since before the first BWE. Looking forward to actually being able to post now, not just read.)

Wow, this thread sure blew up when i was at work

I think ill avoid the temptation to play Asura or Slyvari during BWE3. I have a feeling that it will be insanely crowded and possibly laggy. And while i know crowds arent as big of an issue in GW2, Id rather not be walking around with a bajillion other heros trying to find an alive mob amid all the carcasses

I am liking the vista addition. It just further cements my desire to go out, explore, and find adventure. Now that sounds a bit cheesy, i know, but this is the first MMO that ive played that I am really not treating pre-max level content as simply a way to level up. Im going to take my sweet time and find cool shit. I like that

WTB Jira Cyndrr 1 shot plz!

I swear to GOD this thing is frustrating the crap out of me.

Frog Pajamas, if you're on and want to run it again, I would be appreciative. I just want to get to the darn place after him so I can get my Hero armors on.

Hope you guys post a lot of screenshots/videos of the BWE. Sad I'll be missing it.

The way agro currently works is the mobs will attack the closest player, that's it.

Not true in all cases;

2011 Gamescom interview with Colin Johansen said:
Q: How the AI of enemies will work? Specifically, how enemies will chose their target? Will they be capable of complex behaviour and combat strategies?

A: That’s a great question, because it’s something we don’t necessarely get asked details a lot. There are very few creatures in the game right now that have kind of their final skills and abilities that we intended them to have. For example, in the demo that we’re getting here at Gamescom… the undead army in the high level map is probably the closest thing to what I would consider to be in an army that has a lot work done on it at this point. Our creatures are going to be getting a lot of work between now and release. We have really been focused mostly on the players side of things at this point and on getting all the content put together on. So creature balance will be kind one of the next things that we tackle, and we’ll be moving army by army in trying to give them themes and skills and AI details to each army specifically. In regards to AI and aggro… simple creatures will use an AI system to determine who attack, and one of the most important criteria will be who is the closest target to them, but there are also criteria like who’s doing damage, how much damage they’ve done… and other things like that. These are basic things that most creatures would use. Then there will be unique AI for a number of different creatures that will use specific skills or the entire creatures will do different things than that. There may be creatures, for example, who attack the furthest away player in the party. There may be creatures who try to focus on people wearing medium armor or light armor, and try to chase them around. There may be creatures that run away, there may be creatures who get out of the way of attacks, there may be creatures who specifically only use skills on people at specifc times. So, all of these are aspect on which we’re going to work as we get closer to the release of the game. (source)

Granted, that's a year old, but almost all of the content we've seen is sub-30, and I would expect the AI to have nastier tricks and more varied behavior at later levels. Saying the AI just goes after the closest person based on the BWE experience is the equivalent of making a decision about WoW at level 25.

All the classes play the same with the exception of a few racial skills.

Plus starting areas, capitol cities and personal story, not to mention persona development and character identity are a huge part of what draws players into MMOs.

Believe me, they were everything but pointless to me. :) You guys' posts (and mailing back and forth with Hawkian, who had to put up with all my ramblings) are what made these late months' wait bearable. It was always a delight seeing that Kid Dracula and reading your enthusiastic posts. :)

Alucard will be back August 1st, people will just have to deal with my shaggy hair and "respect-my-authoritah" shades until then.

I am heading out to the gym, but no worries. Kill that bastard worm thing!

That Sylvari Mesmer dress. WANT.

Seriously, I can't wait for release. I will play grudgingly during the BWE but probably stick to WvW so as to leave the rest of the game oh so pristine come launch day.

oh man the mushroom hair sylvari is awesome hah!

Gah this might be harder than i thought it would be to decide between sylvari and asura for my main character.

besides world events, can dungeons also have 10-20 people running them as a raid? having to organize and plan raids was part of the fun of wow's system

No, all dungeons are made for 5 people. Organizing and planning raids for the chance that you might actually get to play the game you're paying for is frustrating beyond belief. Did Bob come online guys? No? Then sorry we can't do anything tonight cause we don't have a tank.

Asura's teeth are starting to creep me out. they are looking less cute all together, more leprosy..ish

Still look bad ass with armor on though

Yeah I think Sylvari have the best character creation.

Seriously though.

I used to spend half an hour to an hour designing my characters in City of Heroes. Though the Sylvari still fail to reach that game's level of customization, they're just so damned varied and impressive looking... Ugh.

My only concern is what will make players keep coming back on a regular basis, or at least enough to sustain a community.

I understand Arenanet and their fans are happy there is no treadmill or carrot to keep players coming back, that "fun" is the only factor.

Well i play Halo once every few months after i played it non stop for the first months it was out. Is that was guild wars 2 is going to become down the road? No real community, just a bunch of randoms who only show up once in a blue moon for the fun until it wears off again and they go find something else?

I'm curious why you suspect this?... I think that's where I'm coming from as a response. Because if something is fun and I've got friends playing it, I can play an MMO for years easily. And even better, GW2 has a sidekick system so I can hang out with people irregardless of level differences or interests.

There is a carrot, lots of them, they're just not required to do content or to keep doing content (gear grinds). Any and all carrots are optional to the player and up to them if they want to seek them out or not. Do what you want because it's fun, not because it's literally the only option you have.

We wont know till the game is out for months and how well or often the game gets new content. Those who want a traditional WoW like endgame in their MMO are going to be disappointed, so they have to realize it's not like that going in. Lot of the endgame in GW will also be PVP oriented as it was in GW1

It is not a carrot if it's not something that players find required. All games have stuff people just do for fun, they have their own goals they create, but when people talk about carrot on sticks in games it's about things that players deem vital and feel they have to go after to stay in the game and competitive. Game has no subscription and doesn't depend on players staying on to play, so it doesn't need to use carrots

I find it intriguing that a game comes along that is predominantly nothing but carrot, and the concern is that it will fall off in retention without the stick.

So, I got my Factions account working. Is there another expansion I should pick up that significantly changed the game?
I replied to one of your previous posts regarding this. I recommend doing the Nightfall campaign then doing the Eye of the North expansion. Eye of the North is where things changed significantly, but with Nightfall came the introduction of heroes, which are AI companions that you can fully customize, making the game easier to play on your own. Prophecies and Factions are more dated and harder to do on your own without heroes. That's not to say they're bad, but at this point I'd only really do those if you still feel like playing after completing the previously mentioned campaigns. Eye of the North easily has the best and most polished content, but to access that expansion you have to have finished one of the big 3 campaigns.

It does have carrots, just no stick constantly hanging the carrot out of reach.

Think people are just using the term wrong. When they speak of gaming using carrots on stick design, it's merely the use of in game rewards or such to artificially keep people playing the same thing over and over again. Everything about GW2 is about letting players experience the game as they want with less focus on baiting players with those carrots.

Oh no... Now I have to resist the temptation of creating a Sylvari during the last BWE and plowing through all that content.

Must. Resist.

Thanks! Sorry, I remembered someone mentioned one, but it took about 12 separate emails to customer service to get my old account back so I was a bit frazzled.

I actually HAVE Factions (but never finished it). It's basically useless you're saying? I should just grab NF and EotN?

I get that, but I've never found a game in which I appreciated the stick aspect.

I think people will continue to play GW2 for a lot of the same reasons they play FPS or MOBA games; competition. The competition is going to be a big part of this game whether it is in WvW or PvP. And then you have the other typical MMO draw of gear and other character progression.

Also I think this game is the most alt friendly game of all time considering you can start a new character and be PvPing on a level playing field within about 20 minutes.
