Time Travelers (Level5, 3DS/PSP/Vita) - Dated in Japan

I can't afford it right now and it's killing me. Hopefully I'll get it sooner rather than later, though. I need more Ishii in my life.

I'm trying to convince myself to wait to play the Vita version ... while simultaneously telling myself I'm going to wait for a Vita revision with video out.

One of those is going to have to give. :|

Reports seem to say that the 3DS version is actually the best one in terms of performance, and the game feels like it may have been designed for the dual screen setup first. Which doesn't surprise me since the game was 3DS exclusive to begin with.

Ah, really? I'm actually leaning towards the 3DS version, even though Ryouga will be disgusted if I don't buy it on Vita ;p

3DS is the lead and first known platform but they said from the beginning that it also would be on other systems.

While I've only played the 3DS demo of the game, the Vita version definitely looks better at the very least. The colors and filters especially.

There was some slowdown present in the demo too, though that might have been cleared up in the final release.

Since there's a pretty large chunk of reading, I'm pretty glad I went with the Vita version.

If you're a big fan of 3D though and not touching things on the actual game screen, the 3DS might be a better choice.

I'm just relaying what I've read from other people. Obviously I've played none of the versions, and I would be getting it on Vita simply because it's region free.

No bigz! I'm just talking about what I've experienced thus far. It's entirely possible that the 3DS has had framerate stutters eliminated entirely.

I just personally prefer these types of games on a bigger sort of screen. =) It's definitely surprisingly good looking. The character models are great.

Furigana? I'm sold.

I wish Falcom would consider a furigana option ...
If you're talking about the PSP games, the current font is so horrid that the furigana is barely readable when present...

As for TT, I checked trophies yesterday and since they're all hidden, I wonder if clearing the whole game will net you a platinum.

+1 "Now playing"

I have less issues with it than others here (I like the characters, I don't mind the pacing, story seems awesome, I like the game a lot).

Maybe 5 or so hours in now? And things are picking up more and more. Genuinely curious about the story (many different things) and it keeps me playing.

About furigana on PSP: The resolution is so low that it kinda sucks -- it is great to have furigana on everything in this game though.

About trophies: There are also trophies for TIPS, but you don't get the trophy until you press start and go to TIPS. I got trophies for 50 and 100. So, there aren't only story/etc trophies. Keep pressing that square button :p

Forgot to mention. I also grabbed the Vita version over the 3DS one.

Reading that blog...

I'm jealous of the variety of Toro avatars on the JPSN.

Why can't they make Toro the universal PlayStation mascot? Even if it's subtle, like tossing him in a logo here and there. It won't hurt the brand at all, but Toro would get more love. =(

Keep in mind that first 3DS shot was taken off-screen. I know the Kotaku article says the Vita one was too, but I'm not so sure.

The Vita version definitely looks better than the 3DS one though.

The director has also said they were able to use certain filters and the like to give the Vita version a more cinematic look.

Well, he's getting more US exposure now than he ever has, so maybe you'll get your wish.

Sony's corporate image could use some lightening up, so I'd be on board for that.

Yeah I can't tell if that Vita screen is off-screen or not but it looks a lot like its not. Would be an unfair comparison.

I didn't want to double post yesterday, but a patc for the Vita version has been released. It is supposed to eliminate a bug preventing you from progressing.

Superior hardware beats inferior hardware: shocking news.

It's shocking in that I don't think anyone (ie. me) expected Level-5 to really do anything with the Vita version. It would just exist and that would be that. Bodes well for LBX W not looking like a PSP game I guess.

I have a hard time choosing these things because I feel like hanging myself whenever I see fingerprints on a screen (I seriously sometimes don't play my Vita because I don't want deal with the lock screen D:), but at the same time, i'd be fine with either version. Depending on how it fares, and if I have to import, i'll obvs. go Vita just because well, you know.

Use this trick to unlock the Vita without having to touch the center of the screen: put a finger on the upper right hand corner, but dot swipe it down. Instead, put a finger from your other hand on the lower left hand corner, it will unlock the screen instantaneously.

The furigana is easy to read compared with trying to make out individual radicals in the kanji I don't know.

Fuck, I don't know Japanese. They could just subtitle it in English! I don't need the voices in English to enjoy a game. PLEASE bring it over :(

Honestly this is why I started Japanese courses last year and have been training on my own. I love video games too much to have Japanese only games keep happening to me.

I mean we could always wait for someone just to write a translation FAQ for it too but I think that would get tiresome. :/ (also, not paying $70!)

Holy shit. This is incredible.

Did they just... take a picture of the 3DS screen?
They better not have.

How exactly to you propose they compare the visuals of a game when one platform doesn't have the ability for screenshots to be taken? The screenshots and videos Level-5 releases cannot be trusted to be accurate representations of the game.

Well honestly that's why this stuff is better left to journalists because there are 3DS capture kits given to all the news sites.

Stretched screens should be bannable quite frankly.

Ofc the Vita one is going to look good, but fact is the 3DS is a very powerful wee machine itself, its time some learnt this by simply paying attention.

The 3DS version from the video looks similar to the Vita screen shown, it'll just lack the details and what the Vita screen adds. The lack of anti-alialising in those screens is quite funny as it actually shows both are very similar.

This game is actually looking alright overall. I half wish the Vita/3DS were closer in power as it'd mean we'd all win...

Quick impressions regarding gameplay mechanics, story, overall game length and music would be much appreciated.

Gameplay mechanics --

Not much to speak about. There are a few QTEs which are embarrassingly easy. The story progresses by switching characters - one characters path will get "locked" and changing characters will do something to unlock the path for the other character. The mechanic isn't super deep -- the game definitely lives up to it's "Playing Cinema" genre in that it is mostly about the story.

Story --

Interesting. I'm still wrapping my head around some of the time travelling fare (as is typical for a story like this) but I liked it a lot. There are certain parts of the "Real Life Super Hero" character's story that made me roll my eyes (total otaku fare) but I liked the overall story and I really came to like the main character.

Game length --

Pretty great for a game like this in my opinion -- it took me 13 hours to play through. Many adventure games are much longer with more endings/etc but this game is fully animated so it is hard to compare it with those. I really liked the length and though that this is a good format to tell a more extended story -- in a real movie, a story like this couldn't be told as well in 2-3 hours, but in game form this length is great.

Music --

Thought it was great. They re-used certain tracks a bit too much, but other than that it is a wonderful soundtrack.
