Do not refer to transgender people as "trannies", "shemales", "traps", and other similar phrases / words and you'll be fine.
The term you want is "trans".
While some short forms are used as a more familiar, casual, yet still polite form, certain short forms get dipped in poison. "Jap", "Paki", and so on.
