GAF Steam Sale Hunt

I'll vote for Cth, for referencing previous hilarity... if I'm in time.

Edit: Guess not! Don't think it'll make a difference, anyhow.

I think I can squeeze that vote in ;)

| Day 5 - Summary |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So todays contest unfortunately were only 2 in number. Some time issues on my side. Sorry about that! Hopefully we can get to three again today. Also it seems that our game contest with Tobe, was a rather dividing affair. I am glad there were at least SOME people that managed to enjoy the game, but I am sorry for those who could not.
The Haiku contest on the other hand was preeeeeeetty successful and popular. Seriously, all of your entries were great! :)
Without further ado..
# 11 - Videogame Haiku
Lets go right over the voting
Code:
[B]Caerith         7,5[/B]
TheDuke56       2,5
Cth             1
EternalGamer    1
Clear winner for the Contest #11: Caerith! Superdeservedly, as I might add. One of the many highlights of the Caelith show:
The random winner for this category will be determined from the 28 other participants (which should mark the highest entry count for any contest so far). And the winner is Dambrosi with his epic Haiku about his undying and neverending love to the game Tobe's Adventure that will transcend their relationship as player and videogame and will form a truly remarkable and longlasting bond for years to come! ;)
Games:
Caerith - Renegade Ops! (sponsored by DOA)
Dambrosi - The Ship! (sponsored by Speevy)
Congrats to the winners! I hope those may be games you do not yet own.
# 12 - Tobe's Vertical Adventure
I said enough about it already, so here are your highscores:
Code:
[B]TheNameless One 24400
Wario64 24400[/B]
alr1ghtstart 23900
The Wizard 23900
Kryptonite 23300
Ms. Tea 23200
mclem 23100
the doombass 23000
Razakin 22700
Tobinishi 22500
A Human Becoming 22300
Htown 22200
Chachachachia 21200
schnell 21100
LuffyZoro 20000
toddhunter 19800
mannerbot 18700
MulderWasTaken 18400
S. L. 18200
Artofwar420 16800
Two winners! Nicely done! I think it'd be rather unfair to only choose one of those guys after their hard work, so both will win. Other than those two, we had 18 more entries. And our random winner from those is Razakin!
Onto the games:
TheNamelessOne - E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy! (sponsored by DOA)
Wario64 - Nation Red! (sponsored by Sye d'burns)
Razakin - The Ship! (sponsored by LastWindow)
Congratulations to all the winners again! :)
Our next contest round will include Trackmania Nations Forever, a free game on Steam (~800mb). Feel free to suggest games that might fit the bill. Todays sales were bad once again, so I need some alternatives for a third contest.
New contest posts coming up in the next 1-2 hours.
There is a high score contest going on for an indie game called A Virus Named TOM, which will be released shortly after the Steam sales, on August 1st. The game will cost $10 but pre-orderers can get it with a 50%-discount and have immediately access to the beta on Steam, plus a DRM-free release through the Humble Store.
This is an idea of a contest, although maybe not so practical for people in this thread. Just saying.
I am still doing the live summary, but is there a demo with which people could participate?
Damn, I even missed the voting part, that sucks. But then, Caelith took this one with ease. Oh well, gotta remember tomorrow that I don't get sucked into playing D3 for half of the day. :P
You still won't though, even without the voting ;p
No demo right now. We'll see whether one is already planned.
Yeah, I just try to mostly only use games that allow for competition play with a demo. There were some exceptions, but as the general rule. Thanks for suggesting it though. Will have a look at it later.
Woo thanks! Not sure how the prizes are given but my Steam name is 'Wario64' if gifting is required
Probably that was the reason, but won't try it tomorrow. :P
And oddly enough The Ship was a game that I was interested when it was on some earlier indie bundle, but the other games weren't interesting enough to drop some money for it.
Oh yeah, steam id is 'razakin' if you or LastWindow needs the contact info for gifting.
I can also mail you if you prefer that. Send me the Mail address via PM then. Otherwise I'll add and gift it to you. Choose your poison. :)
Adding is fine if that's cool
Sure, I just dont want to impose my steam presence onto you guys in case you prefer your current friend list staying as it is. Some guys are picky with that.
I'm down for the trackmania contest. Not played it in a while and I'm pretty awful at the game but it's a super fun game.
Oh crud, I forgot about the voting. Let it be known that I'm a fan of gurudyne's haiku about Eternal Darkness.
Congrats everyone.
Make a Binding of Isaac Contest. Find the "Steam Sale" Item and buy something from the Shop. It's a little bit harder to get (you have to get lucky) and there's no demo, but most people should already own it ;).
I already got this game, if it makes any difference.
Thanks for mentioning. But the big issue here is that I'd need to get people to buy and play a game for the contest which I am completely unsure about. Have as many people not liking it as the Tobe game and most people wasted 5 bucks :( I'd like to avoid that.
Ahh, I don't get picky unless there's a limit (if there is one, but I'm probably far from it)
Also I wasn't aware Trackmania was free on Steam. I'll be trying that out
I've heard Jeff Gerstmann talk about Trackmania so much I'd be down to trying it.
We should try get together as a group to play a multiplayer match in a free-to-play game. Maybe on the weekend before the sale ends?
Which ones would even qualify? Trackmania could be fun (not F2P, but free nonetheless). Spiral Knights I disagree with, because I think its a rather bland game. Dota2 is too specialized. I'd like to avoid TF2 (Motion sickness). MS Flight is not really fun in MP. I guess the big issue here is to find a F2P game that is actually fun :p
But as I said, Trackmania could work if people like it. We could have some proper races.
Is Trackmania a demanding game? Specs wise, I mean.
Nope;
Minimum:
Supported OS: Windows 2000/XP/XP-x64/Vista
Processor: Pentium IV 1.6GHz / AthlonXP 1600+
Graphics: 3D accelerator 16 MB DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics card
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c or better
Memory: 256 MB (512 MB with Vista)
Sound: 16 bit DirectX compatible sound card
Hard Drive: 750 MB free disk space
Quite remarkable for how clean and nice it still actually looks. I mean a 16MB graphics card? Cute.
This man has good ideas.
Considering I still havent found that item after ~40 hours of playing, no, I do not approve of this idea :p I was already considering Isaac though, but a run through takes too long, and even then there is no proper highscore for anything.
A good BoI contest would be making the ugliest Isaac possible. Requires both luck and skill (and it's usually hilarious to see the results).
I was thinking Tribes: Ascend, Age of Empires Online or Super Monday Night Combat (note I haven't played any of these, they just sound good).
You could always go back to ideas from Contest #4. These were my favorite and seemingly most accessible:
Kryptonite - My idea is to create a very short video using Source Filmmaker. It does not have to be a completely new video, it can be a modified version of Meet the Heavy or Meet the Engineer. You can chose to make it about the current sale or a video game(s) of your choosing. Basically, not very restrictive so as to see what people can come up with. Members can vote for their favourite videos.
The_Monk - My idea would be to simply take a Photo. It must be Gaming related and Steam related.
TheNamelessOne - Map editor contest - Select a popular game with a built in map editor and let everyone create their own map. Best map wins.
ChaChaChaChia - Make an acronym (is this the right term for it?) out of a video game character or game title.
Htown - Find the absolute worst game on your games list, or the worst-looking one on the store that has a demo, play it for at least 30 minutes, and post a grammatically correct single-sentence review for the game in this topic. Prove that you actually played the game for at least a half hour by taking two screen shots and linking your Recently Played Games page on your Steam community profile.
I voted for Azith's idea of playing a Podcast in Audiosurf, but that might be too demanding. We could just play a song or a collection of songs.
EDIT: I don't like this song but it works perfectly.
Yeah, I already have these in mind. Thanks for pointing out again which of the entries you preferred, though. I was sort of hoping to get 2 game contests each day + an additional one however. Maybe I'll find a cute short one and a more elaborate "creative" one on top of Trackmania for today.
How about a two-stage contest in Trackmania? Step one - create a track, best track wins. Step two - best time on that track wins.
That is actually a really cool idea. Let me check how easily the editor can be used.
I like this idea for BoI.
Same games that have demos and high scores:
Audiosurf
Beat Hazard
Xotic
Audiosurf/Beat Hazard will definitely get a contest the day Beat Hazard gets a daily.
I like this idea, also is there any steam group set up for this contest? Would be handy for setting up any multiplayer events and having the new challenges show up in steam. (Am I the only one getting quite a bit of 500 errors on gaf lately?)
I have a bit too much to do with this thread, even without updating another site/group. If anyone wants to open one, feel free to do so, however.
