Kotaku Rumor: Final Fantasy Versus XIII dead?

But but but... i saw that 'behind closed doors at the last tgs' versus gameplay showing/leak with them busting into that large room (on seemingly the upper floor of a skyscraper). The segment itself looked quite complete both gameplay and graphics wise. It was glorious... it cant be cancelled. It just cant!

But then again this is SE

Btw I've just read Kotaku's whole article and to be honest the impression I've got is that is just a constructed story.
First all the fact about keeping the cancellation secret is completely crazy, even not considering that it's practically impossible in the internet era, the thing would need to be reported during the financial meetings and Q&A with the shareholders since a complete cancellation would be a major event for the company associated with a loss. Not to mention that as a company they need to keep a honest relationship with their consumers.
At the same time their message is not clear, they try to keep the foot in both camps....they imply that the game has been outright cancelled but at the same time in an other point of the article they try to leave the door open for it to be just renamed ('cancelled in the current form').

So my take on it is that it's better to wait for TGS, the positive thing about this rumor is that it could force SE to talk about the game.

Also, i don't want to ring any alarm, but if i recall Square speaking about only focusing on occidental AAA titles from Eidos and such, and stopping big project from Japan... And you put that in perspective with recent FF results and the whole identity problem it has. After all, 12 was also a really complicated dev and didn't please everyone...

Could this canceling be the premise of a sudden death for the serie ?

was very strange how no one even bothered to ask about versus at the s-e shareholder meeting a month or so ago......

Square prepping for the storm that's inevitably going to hit any day now.

Though I'm thinking they'll publicly announce FFVXIII's official cancelation on the same day they announce FFXV to minimize damage.

I would honestly die laughing if this game were indeed to turn out cancelled. Some people here here should probably quit GAF in embarrassment for defending this game so far into it's "existence."

Jk.

Not really.

That makes this the seventh straight TGS show to wait for real info, right?

Yup, a total trainwreck but the project shouldn't have been announced back in 2006, actual development didn't started until the FFXIII engine was done and even then, most of the team was forced to help completing the development of FFXIII which was considered a priority.Basically this game should have been announced in late 2008/E3 2009.

With that being said at this point they have to give answers at TGS especially if this rumor spreads (which is going to happen).

I'll wait until TGS, surely they wouldn't waste that much money (6 years in developement) on this project. It took them a long time to put out FF XIII. An announcement I wouldn't be surprised to see is that they scrapped it for PS3 and will be launching it on PS4.

Seems like an excellent way for someone to make SE provide us with an update. ;-)

I've never heard of members being threatened with bans for not revealing sources, only that you get banned if you post false info. Big difference.
Nope, people are banned for cock-teasing with "industry sources".

crazy buttocks on a train wasn't (he was dead on with DS3 info, but also had another tease that turned out to be nothing for now) Although he was banned (perhaps more than once) for being a bit obnoxious.

LOL Nomura if true. Leave SE already, please.

"Already"? That'd be the first project on which he's a producer that doesn't turn out successful, so unless it's a catastrophe of Spirits Within-esque proportions he's there to stay.

If Nomura really did leave S-E, would he really be able to get a job? I mean, isn't part of the crappy Versus development because of him? If I was a publisher/dev company, I wouldn't want this man at the helm even if he makes good games.

Versus XIII was already dead to most reasonable people

I concur.

I stopped caring like a year and a half ago, although that 6min clip we got was rather nice. I still had this feeling that they would cave.

But I will admit, there was a little tiny beam of hope in me.

Just as I think giving Nomura too much credit is a bad thing, giving him too much blame is also equally as bad. The issues with Versus rest on tons of people, not just (or even mostly) Nomura.

I'm not trying to put even most of the blame on it. However, I think any blame shared at this point is just plain bad. I mean, I don't know how hiring works for developers and leads in Japanase markets but I figure it wouldn't be good at this point.

Ehh, not buying it. Keeping hope alive!

Maybe they cancelled the name FF VS 13, and will call it something else. Especially since FF-13 looks to be getting a 3rd game. A 4th FF13 game with an unrelated cast/universe/et al is overkill and just bad bad branding.

Actually, this is pretty much what the article is hinting at. But being verrry dramatic about it.

lol

Well the fact that they had to help Toriyama's team finish XIII was one reason why they were slow to get going themselves.

This is all Toriyama's fault. I would hire Nomura without hesitation, but Toriyama? I wouldn't even pay him to do my laundry.

Calling bullshit on this. I find it really hard to believe they'd cancel it at this point, especially with so many statements from Nomura that things are prepared to be shown. We'll either see it at this September 1st conference SE is holding, or at TGS.

Square keeps on surprising.
