Unfortunately, they did announce the third installment due to 'fan demands'.
Those fans wear suits, and are on the 62nd floor of the Square-Enix headquarters in Japan.

Everyone with any sense of forethought saw this coming a mile off.

Given they have shipped 3.4 Million of XIII-2 and multiple people on Gaf saying they want XIII-3, this line is getting really old honestly.

That said, XIII-2 and even a XIII-3 really should have no baring on Vs XIII at all given the seperate teams for the two projects.

The Final Fantasy XIII Team was supposed to step-in and help the Versus XIII team after XIII, that was short lived since, as soon as they finished XIII, XIII-2 was a knocking.

I think a large part of the FFXIII team did go help the Versus team or some other project. FFXIII-2 had a lot of help from Tri-ace and a smaller team.

A) Its a twitter post. Clearly the most descriptive and reliable forms of information

Everyone just shits on VII cause it's the "cool" and "different/special-snowflake" thing to do. The game's graphics have aged adorably, and that FFVII-style Versus mock up looks fucking amazing. I would day 1 that with the same eagerness that I have for day 1-ing Versus proper.

Its all just a cover! Versus isnt happening. SE have really been secretly working away on that FF7 remake!

Whenever this game gets released, under whatever moniker, I wonder if it will still be impressive. I remember the first trailer and later even the first fake or real gameplay segments, it looked like quite an impressive Final Fantasy game. But 6 years plus that might not be true anymore.

Reports are surfacing that Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which has been in development since 2006, has been cancelled.

Kotaku is claiming that the planned PS3 exclusive has been canned quietly by Square Enix after it hasn't been seen in some time.

I will basically zero expectations of FF being anything worth getting hyped over next gen if Versus is cancelled....Cancelling Versus basically indicates that SE are unwilling to take any creative risks with the series....FFXIII is certainly not the worst game in the world, but it is easily the least ambitious and impressive FF game I have played...the worst in the series by a fairly wide margin. Cancelling the game would be somewhat foolish as well, as Versus seems to me to be far more anticipated by gamers than sequels to FFXIII

as a few others have mentioned, it might be to try and get a direct response from s-e. the story has been on the front page of gaf, ign and kotaku (and has now obviously spread like wildfire) so it would foolish for them to ignore it if this isn't true.

my own feelings are that they won't respond because they really do want fans to forget the name 'versusxiii' because the game really will be rebranded at some point. hence this long period of silence.
