Kotaku Rumor: Final Fantasy Versus XIII dead?

I somehow expected something like this. I mean, it's Kotaku, so I expect this rumour to be debunked soon, but if it doesn't get debunked, I also expected Versus to be cancelled... if that made any sense at all...

Basically, I'm at a point where I can believe Versus is canned, even if this rumour is coming from Kotaku.

I'm totally up for Versus being canned if it means I'll see KH3 faster... assuming, of course, that KH isn't canned as well... it isn't... right, Square?

I'd go with Kagari's words on this one as opposed to Kotaku. Mainly because all the evidence is there to say that Versus is coming. Nomura has stated numerous times since Type-0 was released that he'll have a big blowout of news for us soon. Add to that the fact that in no interviews about H3D over here in the west did Nomura contribute. He wasn't even at e3! He's clearly working on something and the only thing he could be working on is Versus.

Also the internal staff at Square must be working on Versus too, when you notice that a lot of people who worked on FFXIII did not work on the sequel. Absorbing Versus' assets for FFXV is also a really weird proposition as, regardless of that make-believe FFXV rumor, it is safe to assume that Ito will be directing it and Ito does like the medieval-fantasy setting and Versus' assets wouldn't fit.

Also a game where you started voice-acting, built a whole world-map and said that 30% of it will be pre-rendered cutscenes simply can't get canned from a financial perspective.

After they released FF-XIII I had zero hype for this game anyway. First FF game I didn't complete, sold it after I couldn't get back into it after months of it collecting dust. I still play through most of the older FF during the year. Totally lost interest in this one.

Didn't they just confirm a new KH on Crystal Tools? KH3 is coming, Versus or not.

Some random dude from Square's western side of things said that Crystal Tools will be sued for other games with other franchises such as FF or KH. Nothing concrete whatsover but GAF exaggerated it the max.

Versus is not using Crystal Tools at all, by the way, but it's very own engine.

I don't think that's quite true. I think it's built fundamentally on it, but had to be heavily altered, with some Luminous lighting tech thrown in there.

It's been altered so much that Nomura refers to it as the Versus engine. Crystal tools apparently wasn't great for the action-RPG type of gameplay. Luminous lightning is part of it, true, but that's not the only modification.

I suppose SE not denying this is basically confirming it?

Took Sony around half a year to confirm TLG is being made. Also no japanese websites or journals are carrying this story. In fact only Kotaku and IGN are reporting this. Square really doesn't have to respond. Also expect Famitsu to ask questions about Versus at the Anniversary Event or next time they get hold of Nomura. Lastly, look at Kagari's post and you'll notice that from what she's heard there will be something shown at TGS.

From what I've heard around, Versus has been dead a bunch of times, and then taken back to life, so who knows.. They've remade the whole thing so many times...

Even if there's some speculation from that source - "keeping quiet as not to upset the shareholders" sounds like the usual hearsay that surrounds these kinds of leaks - given that Kotaku does have a pretty solid track record concerning leaks, how S-E dropped The Last Remnant PS3 quietly and what we've generally heard about Versus' development hell, this rumour crosses the line from improbable to plausible for me.

I hope all the work that's been done so far doesn't go to waste and we see it retooled for next generation or something.

In any case, it would be really easy for Square-Enix to dispel this one.

But WHY would they cancel it? One of the most awaited games this generation I dare to say. I know many people who just bought the PS3 for the Final Fantasies.

this company has no clue anymore, the whole FNC nonsense was ridiculous. FF13 turned out to be shit, FF14 was just a joke, now DQ10 is online (who really wanted this?), Type-0 took ages to come out, KH with all the games is not that strong of an IP it was before and now rumours of Versus canceled.

the only good thing they've done this gen is buy Eidos.

I'm not really familiar with Kotaku's track record on leaks. Besides the Last Remnant, what other leaks were they correct on?

I think it would be nice if SE or Nomura could place a comment on this . .

It's the weekend, and apart from IGN and Kotaku no one else is carrying this rumor. Not even andriasang is reporting, so you can be sure that no one in Japan is reporting it so there's a very small chance of SE responding.

I really think this is just a re-naming though.

Versus XIII is a terrible name. And judging by the fact that I'm actually hyped for the game, and HATED FF XIII, then it should try to distance itself as far away from the XIII universe as it can.

The sooner we can hear about this from S-E, if they even bother saying something, it will be on Monday evening Japanese time (Monday afternoon Euro - Tuesday morning America).

My guess is that they won't even consider this, if they don't show or say anything by the end of this fiscal year I'll start giving up.

Shareholders usually ask Wada about Versus and he gives a brief 'it's in development to ensure the highest potential quality' statement. Also everytime Nomura is interviewed by Famitsu he's asked about Versus, so the topic is bound to be discussed sooner or later. But expecting a full-on statement from Square because 'kotaku says this' is ridiculous.

Indeed, SE won't comment on this, nor should they. If you dispel every little rumour a site hosts which isn't true, and don't comment on the things that are, it's pretty easy to tell what's not true. That's why companies 'don't comment on rumours and speculation' the vast majority of the time.

If XIII-3 is being announced soon, it'll be covered in the Japanese magazines, Kitase or someone will be asked about Versus, and they'll say something vague about it's development.

Exactly! Expect a confirmation of development either at the anniversary event or TGS.

What? I only remember him mentioning a couple of years ago they were toying with the idea of bringing it to 360.

That's not how I remember it. But yes, they ask every year more or less.

They did ask about the exclusivity of Versus once as far as I know.

Usually their questions are nothing more than 'is Versus still in development?' to which Wada says 'Yes'. Kinda like at Take Two shareholders meetings they would ask about GTAs and whether a new one is being developed, basically no-story answers and questions but obviously it would go down a long way to dispel this rumor. SE should actually have a shareholders meeting pretty soon, I think.

If truly cancelled this would make SE one of the worst devs this generation - which is sad considering how far they have fallen.

I wouldn't be surprised if that is the case.

Then again, lol @ Kotaku -- Can't say I really trust them all that much.

One of the BANNED FROM 2CH rumor mills ran it and got a bit of play out of it in the matome-site-matome cesspool, but it stinks so bad that not even the rest of those will touch it without better sources.

To be honest until Japanese websites start reporting it, and thus andriasang starts reporting it, I'm inclined to dismiss the rumor. Not only does it come from Kotaku but really rumors about the japanese studios from western publications are really not trustworthy for me. Nikkei would have broken this news if true as it has huge financial implications on Sony.
