I tried playing some EDH on Cockatrice yesterday. Are Eldrazi really that frowned upon? I get the feeling one player really hated me for using them...

Time to replace them with big sea serpents. Mono-blue doesn't get enough huge creatures :(

Well, no one likes dealing with that shit lol.

Emrakul IS banned in commander though.

Lucario and I were talking about a deck using this combo a few days ago. Super strong.

I've entered in around 6 MTGO dailies with it, and I've been playing it regularly in 1v1 queues and such for a few months.

Went 3-1 four times, 4-0 once. The deck has some poor matchups, but it's goddamn solid otherwise. Not to mention that its bad matchups tend to be expensive and extremely poor against the rest of the metagame.

Just make sure to have a strong sideboard. It's not a very strong deck game 1, and as potent as your combo is, it's pretty much the slowest one in the format.

But... yeah, if you're breaking into modern, you should strongly consider it. Just don't fall into the trap of copying a pro's sideboard; pros get 4-round byes in major events. They don't have to play against bad decks that happen to have absurdly good matchups against you; they often won't have to face affinity, either.

Your sideboard should barely resemble LSVs if you plan on piloting this deck.

Emrakul IS banned in commander though.

I know Emrakul's banned. I was using It That Betrays, Artisan of Kozilek, Pathrazer of Ulamog, and Ulamog and Kozilek themselves. An opponent got rid of Artisan using Duplicant almost as soon as it came up, and I had to nuke my own It That Betrays with Nevinyrral's Disk to stop a player winning - he had just Primal Surged through half his deck, and had by far enough power on his side to kill us all.

Then I proceeded to play Kozilek, Pathrazer, and Jin-Gitaxias on consecutive turns. So I guess it's nobody's fault but mine I got hated :(

Anyway, deck changes. I own Ulamog's physical card, so he's staying. Pathrazer and Artisan are pretty cheap to get hold of, so I think I'll keep those. I guess I can ditch Kozilek and It That Betrays, though. I think I'll also get rid of Darksteel Colossus for flavour reasons. In go some Leviathans. So, creature-wise:
- Kozilek, the Butcher of Truth
- It That Betrays
- Darksteel Colossus
+ Kederekt Leviathan
+ Inkwell Leviathan
+ Stormtide Leviathan

Maybe I could drop the Eldrazi and Jin-Gitaxias altogether, and go for a 'terrors of the deep' theme:
- Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre
- Pathrazer of Ulamog
- Artisan of Kozilek
- Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur
+ Lorthos, the Tidemaker
+ Denizen of the Deep
+ Tidal Kraken
+ Deep-Sea Kraken

The problem with that is as cool as giant squid etc are, they're just nowhere near as effective a win condition as the Eldrazi. Perhaps I'll keep a single Ulamog in there and leave it down to luck - will I be playing a terrifying Eldrazi or a slightly less terrifying but still pretty scary leviathan?

Don't remove cards just because other people pout about losing to them. If they die to your deck, they need to make a better deck or play better magic.

Yes, but if people complain at me for using them then they're probably not finding it fun and are less likely to play with me in the future. If someone used a deck that reliably combos out by turn 5, I'd quickly get bored and stop playing against them. EDH isn't meant to be a competitive format; I don't play Magic only to win. It's a game first and foremost.

But I suppose you're right. I only own Ulamog at the moment anyway, so some substitutions will have to be made until I get some more. Once I do, if someone lets me play one every turn from turn 5/6 onwards, they should probably be packing more removal :P

Don't forget Magister Sphinx, which is practically the same thing. Speaking of sphinxes, Consecrated Sphinx is pretty ridiculous in multiplayer. If two people get one out simultaneously, the rest of the board may as well just not play. Time Warp effects are usually also a pain, because nobody else gets to play while the blue player takes 5 turns in a row (being a bit hypocritical here - my charge counter deck has Magistrate's Scepter).

I've been fortunate enough not to go against any of the generals that can consistently pull off an early infinite combo. I did once play a really aggressive Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon deck - tons of land hate and ramp, then swing a few times with infect while the opponent is helpless.

You guys have any good stories on MTGO for jerkwads?

Like, I know if I finally built a good deck if a lot of people call me a "lucky asshole" but the best story I got is a month ago I was playing my Modern Emeria The Sky Ruin deck which is a pseudo reanimate/fog deck using Kor Cartographers, Knight of the White Orchard, and plainscycling creatures to fetch for plains and then get inevitability when you get one or more Sky Ruins with Yousei out. Early turns you drop Kami of False Hopes out and back up with Wrath of Gods. Then when you get seven plains you can do Kami recursion and fog them all day until you get the lockdown.

I was playing in a match and the guys deck was pretty good, some faeries deck. However I brought myself from the brink like my deck usually does and eventually got the lockdown and then the guy loses his shit.

He was like "You know!? I would just concede but your deck is so fucking annoying so I'm just going to sit here, yeah THIS IS WHAT YOU GET PAL"

And then I say "uh... qq?"

And then he goes "THATS QQ ASSHOLE, YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW, YOUR DECK SUCKS LOLZ"

So we sit there until he times out.

How often do you guys run into this, of course this is in the casual room.

Edit: Also I will admit to trolling someone. I normally don't talk much on MTGO, the less talk, more play the better. However I do remember one game where I was about to win, and the opponent right clicks and selects "Good Game". Like I said I don't normally talk, so I was confused why he just sat there for five minutes. And then he types "I said GOOD GAME ASSHOLE" and then quits. But then he kept PMing me "Good GAME" until I had to block him. I call it trolling because well I guess I could have just right clicked Good Game but again I didn't know that was the proper etiquette.

Also back in the day people would spam you to draw a game if they were going to lose, I'm glad they took that out cause that used to happen a lot.

I bought a core set intro pack, and the booster had a jace AND a foil cathedral of war :-)

Augh I got a Slumbering Dragon and some other crap. Wizard has not been kind to me with all these packs I'm buying lol.

I will say that the Tarland intro deck is a pretty decent starter deck. Just add in a few cheap commons and you already got yourself a decent budget deck.

It's kinda crappy that M:tG:O copies your chat log in games. I mean, it's a gift and a curse because what you say is public to anyone that wants to watch your replay, but at the same time I've had some people help me get around the GUI/screwy-ness of some shit in M:tG:O that would be automated in DotP's that is useful to have on hand.

What would you add? Interested in building that same deck with my m13 box leftovers

Pretty much this. I simply left out the Snapcaster Mage and kept in Scroll Thief, and left red in there just to stick as close to the intro deck as possible to keep it as budget friendly as possible. I have a playset of Snapcasters and at the same time I'm just too lazy to switch them out from my other deck lol.

My half ass modified version of the Tarland intro deck.

4 Delvers
2 Augur of Bolas
3 Scroll Thief
2 Tarland, Sky Summoner
1 Charmbreaker Devils
1 Stormtide Leviathan

3 Incinerate
3 Vapor Snags
4 Thought Scour
4 Mana Leaks
1 Negate
2 Talrand's Invocation
1 Act of Aggression

3 Runechanter's Pike
2 Ring of Evos Isle (actually like this card a lot)

15 Island
6 Mountain
2 Evolving Wilds
1 Desolate Lighthouse

So my favorite Magic cards are the ones that don't do what they say they do. That probably doesn't make much sense, so let me give an example:

Mulch says that it finds land cards for you, when what it really does is fill your graveyard with targets for Unburial Rites.

I'm trying to find some more good examples of these types of cards from Magic past; any good suggestions?

I have a friend who plays online a ton. Whenever he has an unusual deck that works well people give him all kinds of shit too. It's just something you have to put up with. Suck those bitter tears down -- they're your reward for winning.

I got a few WTF's when winning with that R/B curses deck.

A few shit talkers too. Always surprised to see that happen. I know it's bound to happen in any competitive medium, but come on dude, it's MAGIC. You don't need to talk shit.

People frown on Eldrazi in EDH? I thought Artisan of Kozilek was an auto-include? That said, EDH is a political format, so while I don't think stuff like Ulamog should be shamed out, don't be surprised if resolving one paints a target on your head.

So many people in my group run Bribery and Mind Control-type cards that running eldrazi usually ends with your own card beating you to death. There are tons of decks/cards that seem unfair, eldrazi just happen to be the most common since they can be effective in almost every edh deck. Really the only things not looked down upon are shitty or group hug decks.

Pretty much. Every deck has its ridiculous over-the-top cards. I don't know how many times I've won simply by resolving Insurrection.

Some pretty good value in that G/W, but gotdamn is that burning vengeance deck terrible. Terrible value, terrible deck. Ugh.

I'd be interested to play the G/W (Thragtusk flicker? YOOOOO) but it doesn't seem like a purchase to me

Yea the green white deck almost pays for itself. Thragtusk, Blade Splicer and Green Sun Zenith come out to $20-25.

Two quick questions:

Does Drowned Catacomb come into play untapped if I already have a Drowned Catacomb in play, or does it need to be an Island or a Swamp in play?

Does Drowned Catacomb act as an Island or a Swamp when dealing with islandwalk or swampwalk?

Thanks.

No, lands only count as Island/Swamp/whatever if they say it on the card.

For example

The shock lands are so good because they can be searched for with fetch lands, for example
229.jpg

could fetch Watery Grave.

Hey, but Thragtusk! And uh, that dragon!

Krenko and Talrand are nifty in their respective tribes too.

...yeah, outside of draft it's pretty bad. heh.

I'll be watching on the stream. Make the top 8 then shout out GAF.

I mean, if that happens, I'll definitely do it. Wish I had a GAF shirt on hand lol

Honestly, I don't think a GW build can make it... the Naya Pod builds are probably stronger. My hope is that I'm able to generate a direct focus on my gameplan by cutting out the red and accelerate into a stronger board or ultimately an Elesh Norn. Losing Bonfire kind of sucks, you know, in case someone gets out ahead of me, but perhaps siding in Gideon Jura will help.
