What, are you listening too? (July 2012)

It's summer, it's late at night so what about some relaxing brazilian song? I've been listening to the latest Mallu Magalhães album and it's really a feel good, somehow warm one. Her latest single, Sambinha Bom.

Finally got around to listening to Sharon Van Etten's "Tramp," which has been on my harddrive since its release on Amazon. I am in love with this record. It's uplifting, it's haunting, and it's everything I was looking for this Summer. Spinning this album at the end of a long day makes everything feel right.

I have been listening to John Coltrane's The Heavyweight Champ boxed set. Even his outtakes are glorious. Anyway, my question to Jazz-gaf: I listen to Coltrane, Davis, Mingus, Coleman, and Blakey, but I haven't ventured to far out after that. Which artists should I check out?

What took you so long, saw her live right after I got my album, fell in love ever since...I even got to talk to her for a little, while everyone else was just trying to get her autograph.

Ooh thanks for this. First time I saw it being used I thought someone had just gone to the effort of making a collage and typing out the info.

New Passion Pit is meh.
I liked the Dirty Projectors LP more than Bitte Orca. (the only other album I've listened to)
Having not heard any other Twin Shadow I didn't think it was that bad.
Listening to A Tribe Called Quest for the first time ever, bumping my head constantly.

Lots of stuff, but I just want to pimp two that are on heavy rotation right now.

John Frusciante - Letur-Lefr
He hasn't put out anything for a couple of years, and this is effectively a teaser for his next album which is out in a couple of months (although none of this EP is on the album). It's his first project where computers were used in it's production, it has an edging towards hip-hop, and features a few guests including RZA. I really like it, can't wait for the album.

Inara George - An Invitation
Van Dyke Parks co-wrote SMiLE by the Beach Boys, my second favorite album of all time, he arranged and co-produced Ys by Joanna Newsom, my favorite album of all time, and he made his own album, Song Cycle, which is certainly one of the best of all time (at the time, it was also the most expensive ever made). This is another album he was heavily involved in, and another that leaves me weak at the knees. Inara George is better known as half of The Bird and the Bee, and while I do like their quirky material, this album is remarkable, it's charming, and lush without being overwrought or self indulgent. Wonderful album.

Been in the mood for some heavier stuff than usual.
Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero
Killing Joke - Absolute Dissent
A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step
Lacuna Coil - Comalies

It'd take forever to go through with covers and such, so I'll just list them. I'm in a huuuuuuuuuuuuuge electronic music phase at the moment. LOVING it.

Skrillex:Banarang EP. It's pretty light on the bro-step. Probably my favorite ep of his, where the last one went pretty all the way bro-stepy.

Deadmau5:.....recent singles (HR 8938 Cephai, Aural Psynapse, Maths, Where Are My Keys, The Veldt). Awesome stuff.

Fiona Apple: Idler Wheel. First album of hers I've ever heard, and shes a genius. Amazing lyrics, sung with unbelievable emotion and power. Damn. Love this album.

XXXY: Everything EP. This guy has a major talent with sampling vocals over awesome music. Sure, it seems to be all he can do, but damn if it isn't amazing. (I Know This) Can't Be Love is an instant classic. Song of the year so far, but of course I could be forgetting lots.

AraabMuzik: Electronic Dream Deluxe Edition. Lots of different electronic styles paired with hip-hop-y beats. Good stuff.

Metric: Synthetica. Killer, killer album. Not a single weak track. Speed the Collapse and the TT are easily among their bests.

Lone: various singles (Pinapple Crush, 2 remixes of that, Once in a While, Raptured, Angel Brain). Such a great style, and PC is another classic. Dat hook.

Gil Scott Heron and Jaime XX: We're New Here. Heron has some good lyrics/singing, but I'm really here for Jaime XX. That man is a genius, and I'd love for him to put out some solo stuff after the new XX album. This album is really good, but I feel like it'd be better if Jaime did his own this, with all due respect to Heron.

Blawan: Long Distance Open Water Worker. One of the absolute top producers around (only under Scuba and possibly Jaime XX for me, unless I'm forgetting again...), and this EP rocks. Soooooooooooooooooooooooooo dirty and grungy barely dance music. It kind of hits the same note the whole time though, nothing poppier or dancier to be found here, but fuck it.

Scuba: Aeusaunic EP. I love Scuba, but I feel he reached his genius level with the Adrenaline EP, then went even further with his recent Personality LP (these two are some of my absolute favorites, with Personality reaching into my favorite albums list. I'd be shocked if something came out to beat that as my AOTY). The earlier stuff is still good however! And you can hear a clear improvement with A Mutual Antipathy->Aesaunic EP->Triangulation (I'll leave out all the non-album singles and such). This sounds more like Triangulation, which is great. Best two songs are Flesh is Weak and Symbiosis, which rank with his best.

I'm listening to the new Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti album, Mature Themes.

It's okay. The first song he put out from the record, "Baby", is by far the best track on here. Overall not as good as Before Today.

Chrome says there's malware on the first pages (100ppp) btw.
Yeah, getting that as well =[

I just discovered the Italian pianist Ludvico Einaudi. «Nuvole Bianche» is probably the most beautiful thing I've heard in a very long time.
