This is so great. I'm impressed with the planning & forethought that is going into this project.
I think it's a wonderful endeavor.
Another question about where to buy for an Aussie, where is the best place to get mini figs? shopforyou.com.au doesn't seem to have much of a range.
As far as my knowledge goes, I would say that Bricklink is your best bet for minifigs, Jables. I've ordered quite a few through Aussie vendors, with zero problems, so I'd definitely recommend it.
On another note, I caved. I bought the rather mediocre Wolverine's Chopper Showdown for the rather awesome minifigs. I completely forgot that Deadpool was included. SOEXCITE!
Don't be like me and completely forget about building the actual chopper.
Picked up Star Wars Republic Frigate for $75 tonight. About halfway through, and really cool build so far. Not a fan of prequel/Clone Wars stuff, but this was such a good price for a well regarded set I hate to bite.
Will finish it tomorrow after work, but so far it is rather fun.
Um'd and ah'd over that set for such a long time and eventually opted to not bite. At that price, though, it's definitely worth it, but my lust for it died long ago.
Organizing is the 800lb elephant in the room for me. I'm currently breaking down all my sets that are in boxes, shifting them over to zip-loc bags (organized per set) and storing them in large tupperware bins. As I like to save the boxes, I am folding them flat. Eventually I will have to go back and start sorting out all the sets by piece type and buying a lot of sortable containers. Since I'm on my way to 100,000 pieces, this will be no small task.
I have toyed with the notion of having all my old 80s sets in separate sorting since many of the pieces are discolored and really tight connections (not to mention gray was slightly lighter back then), but realized that it would be much easier in the end to just integrate all my newer sets into my older pieces. Would make MOCing easier. I do need more storage bins and will get a bit more detailed in some sorting. I do know I will have a separate container for all the tan cheese slopes from Tower Bridge. Any other color would get lost in that pile if I ever integrated them. And looking at Brickset, I have an estimated 39000 pieces. I need to remove some sets though, because learning that an old bin of sets went missing means I am missing about one to two thousand pieces or so.
Anyways, I stayed up late and finished the Republic Frigate. Very cool build over all, particularly the body of the ship. But it is rather fragile when you touch the ship almost anywhere. I like that they built in a retractable handle to pick it up and move it, but that does not change the fact that touching it nearly anywhere else makes it feel like it will break apart. Also, the landing feet do not keep it stable enough. It looks fine just sitting there, but god help you if you touch it. So wobbly.
Also, the mini figs suck. Not a fan of Clone Wars, so the two random Jedi and two Clonetroopers do nothing for me. But it does come with a Yoda figure, which is VERY cool to finally have. And I have a few more lightsabers now.
But, for less than $80, this was a steal for all the pieces. Lots of really cool pieces for MOCing in there, which is the main reason I got it. I was thinking of using all the quarter cylinder pieces to use in a Microbrewery Modular eventually. I do not have the bricks to make it and keep my other modular MOCs, so I will have to sacrifice one soon. Or just order another modular for parts and just use a lot of that.
Short version of Republic Frigate: get it only if on sale. While there are some neat building techniques in it, the fragile nature of it and lame (sorry Clone Wars fans) figures put it into the "meh" category. But, it does have a nice variety of neat pieces, including quite a bit in dark red.
The set is on sale for $83 and change at BN stores now, which is where I grabbed it. That price for over 1000 pieces is pretty damn good.
a Microbrewery Modular
I picked up the Republic Frigate last month when BN first put it on sale for $83. It's a great deal at that price, and the time to get it is now, because the Star Wars cap ships always go up in price once they are OOP.
I do love the big ships, but the version I really want to get is this one from 2007:

Look at all that glorious red!
Also need to get the Venator and am waiting on a new version of the Imperial Star Destroyer.
Oh my god. Another one? One day your house will have no furniture or decorations except for the sprawling modular metroplolis of your own design. Please leave room for a computer so Lego GAF can have pics.
Wife took a pic before we left. That's a lot of Lego!

I didn't realize that the UCS ISD was that large. It's shorter than the SSD, but much "taller". Not sure what the shuttle is... it's not the Imperial Landing Craft... a MOC I guess?

Someday the UCS ISD and the UCS Falcon will be mine.
UCS ISD = 37" long x 16.5" tall
UCS SSD = 49" long x 10" tall
Both height measurements are with included stands.
Yeah - I think the ISD and the Falcon will be my tax refund gifts to myself for next year.
Oh man I hate you so much. What an amazing haul!
Anybody here have the Scorpion Pyramid from the Pharaohs Quest set? I have the Sphinx and really like it and thought I might want this one too. Just wondering if it's a good build or not. It looks cool but I wonder if most of the pieces are just plain and/or mostly in the big ass spider it comes with. It seems like I can can get it under what it was at retail on ebay.

What was the MSRP on the pyramid? $110 on Amazon, which doesn't seem too bad for a dc'd 792 piece set. I bet it was $100.

I wouldn't mind having that, honestly. I was super-tempted to buy it when I first jumped back in but wasn't sure how it would fit in with other sets. Hmmmm, do I want that or Hogwart's?
edit: looks like many of the Pharaoh's Quest sets are below MSRP. Hmmmm. The scarab looks neat...and the cobra...
