Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

I'm pretty sure you can buy Unidentified Dyes in the gemstore for like 7 per 200 Gem or something like that which kind of defeat the purpose of working hard to collect them when some people just can buy them in an instant. Sure it's going to cost alot but we've seen it in all MMOs with item stores - people just throw away hundreds of dollars for items.

From watching the latest woodenpotatoes video, I realised something.

I'm stuck in the check list mentality where I aim to get 100% map completion. I kind of want to break out of this and focus more on dynamic/world events because I found myself having more fun doing those but I felt like I had to run around the map just to search for these events. Am I playing gw2 wrong or does the game actually promote the whole "explore the world to find more events" thing? Or is there a feature where you can see where events are happening?

The big thing is events are rarely one event. In fact they are chains or trees or webs. They have multiple stages and different states. I think the important thing to know is the hearts are positioned to get you to see and interact with the events. So you should likely see a concentration of events around a heart.

Also, some events need to be kicked off, either by talking to an NPC or clearing a contested state in an area. If you see a waypoint with the weapons clash symbol, that means it is contested. That also means you have to clear out the enemies to be able to warp there, but it also likely means an event failed and the enemies have to be removed before you can start the event chain.

They are called dynamic because they change depending on the previous state. They aren't always linear, and you won't be led by the hand to find them.

It still cost them money though.
Money comes from working, working costs time.
It's the same thing in the end, only one person has less money.

Is it the person not working =P

I like the idea of being able to buy if I want to. I'm a grinder at heart and don't mind farming things but if I can't get a group together for one last item in a dungeon I'll pay $5 or whatever.

I just wish we had more knowledge of what these things will look like. In the reddit post there is mention of a hammer that turns you to liquid metal. That sounds awesome!

About legendaries, once they are equipped on a character can they be used by others on your account? Like if I make one for my Warrior could I make a Guardian and use it or is it character specific?

And are we talking months of farming for these things or we will start seeing them on characters a couple weeks after release for the hardcore?

Only time will tell man. We don't know yet how hard to get some of the stuff will be.
I read one kind of item you need to forge something costs 200 skillpoints for example.
Also, you can preview the legendaries before you make them!

You can preview? That's pretty awesome. I loved when they added that function to WoW where you could see what an item was like on your character ... not that it really mattered because to be competitive you didn't really have a choice of what you were going to wear.

I'm glad there isn't any huge roadblock to achieving these items besides time. I stopped hardcore raiding near the end of my time in WoW and some of the materials you could only get off of endgame bosses which really sucked.

Time is something I have and being the dungeons are 5 people max I should be able to get a group and run these things as often as I'd like.

Elementalist is overpowered. Discuss!

Seriously, whenever I see a PvP, PvE, or WvW video, it almost always features an Elementalist laying waste.

I didn't think so. They're super squishy. If you're playing with bad people who don't focus on and eliminate the ele quickly I suppose they can dish out a lot of damage.

I agree. Elementalist might be good if left unchecked, but the same can be said for most classes.

It's a difficult class with a steep learning curve. If you see an ele laying waste in high level play, they probably earned the right. I only figured out a slice when I did my big ele run during BWE2.

I wouldn't mind assistance.
I wouldn't mind that either but I feel bad asking people to help me if they are not doing that story and the story gets ruined for them.

I also don't know if I want to join someone else's personal story because they might be doing another race which I want to do on my own when I get a chance.

Another question: Do you think it makes much difference being able to put a gem and each pistol compared to only having 1 gem on a rifle? Doesn't this mean that you will always do more damage dual wielding?

Well, I think our guild is/will be large enough that there would be a good chance that at least a few people have done your personal story missions. If not, im sure there are those out there that really wouldnt mind. I know I would have no issues helping out human personal story since it will be a LONG time until play one, if ever.

As for the second question, if that actually happens, I think an easy fix would be to simply double the value on gems going into 2 handers. Cant say I really bothered with gems in the bwe so not sure how this works

The difference though is that an Elementalist can sit in the back and no one will see him.

Most people who play games, I have come to learn, have their attention diverted way too easily. (i.e. in capture the flag games, the average player will try to get a kill over delivering the flag)

In Guild Wars and similar games, melee tends to get targeted over range because they are just in your face and only focused players will keep their eyes on the prize and realize that the guy off in the corner alone is decimating their team. Of course, this doesn't apply to coordinated players. I'm talking about random players, pick up groups, etc.

So did the goons settle on a server yet? Which one? Need to know where our guild wants to not be. Any other bad groups known to be going anywhere else?

Titan's Alliance, or any other dedicated WvW alliance in general, since its their mission to dominate WvW. All of that translates into insanely long queues and face stomping less coordinated servers. That doesnt sound like a whole lot of fun to me, and I would rather be on a server with a bunch of juvenile idiots than that, since I can at least ignore the juvenile idiots (though would prefer to avoid both)

SA isn't a known bad group. I'd rather be on a server with them than the PA guild.

Our guild rather stay away from them so to us they are bad even if they are just idiots. They have ruined many a good communities and rather know where everyone stands.

So what servers are they planning on going to if known? Titan's Alliance? Any clue where they are going?

I think we should just wait till they announce what those new servers will be and then pick from the new ones, as long as non of the big alliances moves to them.

Well I'm not playing with GAF but my old guild, and they are tossing around ideas for pinning down a server already and they want to avoid certain groups. Bunch of the officers in the guild are being pushy on this so they are not being patient

Personally, my ideal would be a medium-high to high-low pop server with a few good guilds on it so that WvW is not a total uncoordinated mess. Does such a mythical server exist? I dont know, but I would be a bit wary about rolling on a fresh server since that reach Henge level crapitude, at least for a while, since you really cant expect decent sized, decently coordinated guilds in the first couple of weeks/months if they havent formed beforehand

Jade Quarry seems like a good bet. We should probably have a poll sometimes later to find out on which server we roll. Or maybe that's up to the officers to decide, I don't know.

here's more data from yet another (still on-going) race/profession poll

They aren't just a bunch of idiots. What good communities have they ruined? So many people come from that site that any groups that have formed from there don't mean anything about the next.

Eh, id be fine leaving it up to the guild leaders since they seem to share my opinions on where to go and polls will always be incomplete

Why would you play an elementalist limited to a few attunements?
Youll do a lot more attunement swapping in ele than you probably would in a standard 2 weapon class

And a huge Norn theif just sounds odd to me. Though i guess it would be a pretty rare combination. I dont think my charr engineer will be

This guy titles his series Tours and Tactics, which is basically what it is about. He discusses the defenses, layout of each individual keep, depot, castle, etc on the map and talks about WvW tactics

Awesome, thanks! A good WvW tutorial was pretty much the very top thing in the list of "stuff I need", not just for me but for many people I know. Again, this is incredibly helpful, thanks a lot! Watching it as soon as I post this. :)

I dig the colors of that Sylvari, it's very close to what I'd like to go at launch (read as headstart): dark green, red eyes and a treant-ish visage.
I'm not a big fan of blue-cyan skinned Sylvari, especially those very bright and saturated - doesn't feel very flora, violet would be fine.
I bet they're inspired by Avatar.

My thoughts exactly. There's even quite few flowers that are blue. She did look rather beautiful at night, though, with the glowing white bits (you can see them in most screenshots, actually).
However, yes, this dark bark-like brown looks just amazing.

That sucks, lot of the light armor looks better than anything else.

Your character is supposed to look the class it is. It would look absurdly ridiculous having an elementalist run around in chain armor.

also, check this site to see previews of all cultural and dungeon armors/weapons

Awesome, thanks! Say what you will, but (changeable) colors aside, the Sylvary armors look amazing.

Three unedited videos of a group trying to do the Ascalon Catacombs Explorable mode. They're a little underleveled and die a lot.

Thanks a lot. Saving for watching right after posting this. :)

We also have had a lot of GAFers ask if their friends and family are welcome in the GAF guild, which we all agreed would be perfectly fine. However, since GAF registration and approval takes so long, it's likely those non-GAFers who wanted to be a part of the community would feel like second class members. This way, non-approved GAFers can still interact with the guild.

That's really thoughtful, I already have a couple of friends I plan to bring to GAF. :)

Sorry if this has been asked already but :

1) About exploration, they seem to put an emphasis on it but, for those who were in the beta, could you confirm if it plays a big role? Can you go "casual-wandering" (solo or with team mates) to discover things without quest assignements and still have background info/scenario unfolding?

There are no quest assignments, except from the single thread that is your personal story (a minimal percentage of all there is in the game). Exploration IS the game. You will miss virtually all the content if you don't explore. Also, do not assume you've seen everything in a particular place just because there's nothing more there CURRENTLY.

2) About configuration and performance...I know this had been raised, but it seems the optimization was off at the start of this thread. As there been any improvement? Any hope to run it decently (>30fps) in medium/high on an ageing mid-range gaming laptop (I7 920QM + 4Gb ram + Geforce 445m)...or worse case, on an even more ageing gaming desktop that is normally hooked to TV, and therefore mostly for gamepad game-style (E8400 + 4 Gb + GTX 460 that complemented it 2 years ago to beef it up)?

I have a 4-year-old comp with a Geforce 9800 and the game ran mostly fine for me (with some exceptions), with everything on max (except for VSync off and shadows on low) and 1680x1050. The game, although improving over the BWEs (runs much better now than in BWE1), is currently CPU bound, which means that it runs much better than expected on lower end computers, but not much better than that on high-end monsters. That's why you'll often read people with mid-lower end machines say it runs perfectly for them, while high-end users are puzzled as they can't get much more than 30-40 FPS.

You're going to be bored exploring Divinity's Reach.

Words can't explain how much I disagree with you. Seriously. Shakespeare could not describe the intensity of our disagreement. If we disagreed any more, one of us would wrap around and we'd perfectly agree.

The big thing is events are rarely one event. In fact they are chains or trees or webs. They have multiple stages and different states.

THIS IS THE THING! Stay around, people! Also, investigate! If you see something unusual, say a herd of cows coming up the hill, follow them! Treat the game as you would a pen-and-paper RPG. Be on the lookout for the weird, the attention-catching, the thing that wasn't there before.

I think the important thing to know is the hearts are positioned to get you to see and interact with the events. So you should likely see a concentration of events around a heart.

However, you CAN'T trust Hearts to get you to see all or even most of the events. Remember the "poison the water supply" event in Queensdale? Yeah, no heart close to it at all.

Both very true. The NPC thing is particularly important; if you see an NPC coming right up to you and calling for your attention, talk to them! They're not trying to sell you an used car! >_>

I like the idea of being able to buy if I want to. I'm a grinder at heart and don't mind farming things but if I can't get a group together for one last item in a dungeon I'll pay $5 or whatever.

I'm not entirely happy with the fact that you have to grind, or worse, buy components for legendary weapons. However, as they are, indeed, cosmetic and just for bragging rights, I guess it's not particularly important. I'd rather have components drop from dungeons, or particularly hard challenges (or hard challenges in dungeons! :D)., but I guess some would take issue with being forced into these as well.

I wouldn't mind that either but I feel bad asking people to help me if they are not doing that story and the story gets ruined for them.

I also don't know if I want to join someone else's personal story because they might be doing another race which I want to do on my own when I get a chance.

Easy solution; pick a friend, agree to do each personal story only with them; when you play the same race, pick a different personal story. That way you each get to see two different personal stories for each race.

Another question: Do you think it makes much difference being able to put a gem and each pistol compared to only having 1 gem on a rifle? Doesn't this mean that you will always do more damage dual wielding?

I hadn't thought about that, but that's a good point. WoW solved this by having more powerful gems go into two-handers. Do two-handers get two gem slots here? They should, actually.

Most people who play games, I have come to learn, have their attention diverted way too easily. (i.e. in capture the flag games, the average player will try to get a kill over delivering the flag)

Oh god, this. I lost count of the amount of Warsong Gulch games I won solo (or with a friend) by sneaking the flag by the sidelines while both teams battled it out in the middle as if it was the Royal Rumble.

I also lost count of the times I lured people out of a flag in Arathi Basin, while a mate capped it. People really have no concentration skills. It really sucks when the randoms you're paired with are the ones with mosquito attention spans, and the opposing team is the organized one, though. :P

Why would you play an elementalist limited to a few attunements?

Mostly because there are traits that favor this (the ones in each of the elemental lines), although there are also traits that favor SWITCHING elements (the ones in the Arcane line). So it's personal taste, really.

Is GMG the cheapest place to get this game right now? They have a 20% off coupon that will bring the regular edition down to $47.96.

Frankly, after hearing the people in here stating that Mesmers are underpowered, I've reached a point where I am simply going to ignore all further overpowered/underpowered discussion. Because most of it is pretty ridiculous.

New client update available. about 10,000 files

580mb actually

Supersampling is in the options now.

There's now a Music length slider (how long music is played when it's played)

FPS counter on the options menu

and a mixing buffer slider for sound

Thief underpowered, confirmed by devs!
