Xbox Live Fall 2012 Dashboard Public Beta - Signup Now

Out of curiosity...has anyone on GAF ever explicitly mentioned being slapped on the hand by MS for posting about these "betas" (more like release candidates)?

No.

Also, this current dashboard beta definitely has the feel of a beta, and not a release candidate. There are a few things which seem placeholder for the time being, and I suspect the official release of this update is still 2 months away.

except IE on 360 is actually good.

I have the beta but have yet to give it a go. I'll try it tonight but IE in general has been the worst browser for the better part of a decade. They will have a lot to do to impress me. I've been using game console based web browsers since the Sega Saturn.

It seems alright to me but I can't think of a situation where I'd use it.

something IS wrong

i have both the old and new home... i'm puzzled.

edit: going offline fixes it so i't probably some server side settings.

Not really worth the update. I lost the xbox live gold offers they have on the dashboard usually and can't seem to find it anywhere in the beta -.-

Dude, it's IE. It's garbage by default unless proven otherwise. Where have you been for the last 15 years?

IE cleaned up its act a while ago. Where have YOU been for the past year?
Besides, this is a browser on a console. I don't see what the big hoopla is about, but its already FAR better than the POS PS3 browser.

I don't believe that at all, The PS3 browser isn't bad but I don't expect IE to be very good at all.

I am going to try it tonight and see though.

The common joke is that IE sucks, but that hasn't been the case for years. The reality of it is that the browser has been very fast and stable since IE8. Compared to the latest PS3 browser, the 360 one blows it away.

IE6 was garbage. All newer versions of IE have improved to the point where IE9 is actually a solid browser.

So they caught up to Firefox v.1? Tabs and everything? Next you'll tell me IE now has a flash blocker and an ad blocker as well. I'm interested to see IE on the 360. I have to clean up my attic a bit then I'll check it out. Oh, and I have the 360 chatpad so it sounds like the thing to have with this.

can you guys try various things with the browser? like can it open google docs?

I don't actually use Google docs but I tried the demo. Everything seems to load okay, although there is noticeable lag. I can access all the controls as you might expect.
However, at the moment at least there seems to be no way to enter text using the controller.

I press A on the page, and the cursor appears there waiting for text input, but it's like the browser doesn't recognise it as an area for text entry (so the keyboard doesn't pop up) I'm guessing that if you plug in a keyboard or use the chatpad it'll work, but with a controller it seems pretty useless at the moment.

The chatpad finally has a use with the addition of Internet Explorer. Actually, its pretty much required.

As for Google Docs, I think someone said earlier Office 365/Sky Drive Office works?

I don't think anyone will argue with you that when it comes to add ons, IE still lags behind the rest. But IE9 and 10 are both very fast and secure browsers. In fact they actually beat Firefox and match Chrome in the security department.

It's really not that bad of a browser. I use it on my work computer and it's as fast as Chrome or Firefox. I prefer to use Safari on my macbook so keep that in mind.

Can anyone with the update and a lot of XBLA, XBLIG and Downloadable games tell me if the dashboard loads sections like Quickplay and My Games any quicker?

The current dashboard takes over 1 minute to just load a list on my current console and the biggest change I want from the update is to either remove the time it takes to load a list of games or at least shorten the load time.

IE9 is a decent browser. There are quicker browsers but IE9 has made a lot of big strides to be competitive and it's gotten a lot better with at being standards compliant so you don't have to spend so much time developing workarounds to get things to render correctly. In the past I would not have been happy if Microsoft had put a browser on the 360 but IE9 is a good browser and with IE10 it should be even better for the future of the web as it has good CSS3 support.

Takes about a second now.

Personaly I never use IE on my pc, but it is great on the console, and makes the ps3 browser look and feel like a dinosaur.

Yea, it's blazing fast compared to what it was. I'm at about 150+ games, and its an instant load for the entire list.

Edit: Beaten, but it's still impressive.

Assuming you've downloaded and ran the app on your 360, you should get it anytime within the next 24 hours.

I do not even remember how it went with the last 2 betas I participated in.

I have the key issued to me from the Microsoft connect site and that is it so far.
