what is the secret to not getting permanently banned from NeoGAF.com?

Never been banned yet, although I only registered early 2009 which isn't too long ago.

I always make sure I preview my post first, hardly ever impulse post. I think a lot less people would be banned if they took more time to review what they were saying before they click submit.

I once got banned for a month for posting around in various threads asking for people to PM mods for me because my ability to PM and create threads suddenly vanished.

I eventually learned that I had been Junior'ed, but my tag hadn't changed. Because I was Junior'ed, my inbox was full after 50 messages, which is why I couldn't send PM's directly to mods.

Gah, those were dark times for me. :(

So, yeah. Don't do what I did. That's the only advice I've got.

Don't be too edgy when trying to be funny. Don't talk about your true beliefs like you do among friends but try to be PC enough to not offend anyone. Especially easely offended minority groups. Also keep an eye on your sarcasm output because it doesn't always translate well into English or written language.

This was hilarious.

Just got back from a 2 month ban and told my next ban will be a perma, please offer me all the advice you have as a community to keep me safe.

Going to go back through this thread hoping to absorb all the tips.

I do this. I almost always preview the post and read it once before posting it. It's a bit of a disadvantage in fast moving threads, though, especially if you're engaging with multiple posters at once.

Best tip if you really don't want to get banned:

Don't specifically insult someone on a personal level. My only two bans come from being a shithead to someone. Otherwise contribute to the conversation in a constructive manner and you'll be fine.

dont enter any thread about someone who is transgender.

dont enter any thread about womens issues/feminism

its seems ok to post whatever you want about islam/muslims/the middle east, but anything related to any of the above is an instant ban.

ive seen the most disgusting things said about saudi arabia/terrorists and the religion of islam, no one was banned. however use the wrong term to describe a transgendered individual or make a comment about it and the amount of bans about it was ridiculous. just check the warchowski thread today.

nope, that didnt warrant 2 months imo, somebody must have it out for you

i got a ban lifted by stump once, some other mod must have misunderstood and just hit ban

i would say dont hesitate to enquire about a ban over twitter/steam, it could be lifted

I can't remember but I think I got banned twice as a junior, one of them was for 3 months, other one might have been too. 2 or 3 bannings overall, can't remember. Either way I somehow managed to survive it, learned all my lessons, etc...

I also stray away from all controversial topics. Too paranoid about being banned for wording something badly or saying something that might be offensive even though I don't realize it.

Didn't you also make a thread about why kickstarters are duping people or was that someone else. I remember someone was on a crusade to expose kickstarter as a scam which included suggesting people who support kickstarters are fools.

In general I think one way to avoid being banned is to not have a personal crusade like people who enter a thread and always manage to shoehorn im something that is completely OT.

Yeah. Kickstarters are shady. But the reason I got banned was stated as thread whining, not "being mean about Kickstarters".

In the 2 months I've been banned I've been proven right about Kickstarters anyway. Feel vindicated. Thanks, Penny Arcade.

It's usually pretty easy to tell just by looking at a thread's title that it's going to be a user graveyard. Even though I'm usually greatly tempted I do my best to wait a few days and then check out the discussion, because by that time the smoke has cleared and the carnage has already occurred.

If you have a different perspective than mainline GAF, keep it to yourself or at least be very careful. Be mindful of any new consensus made, and stay away from any topics concerning it for a while, at least until there are enough dead bodies to know the bounds. Stay out of gender, race, political threads or threads that involve sensitive or complex issues. If you see a thread with a bunch of people fucking up, don't go there because you may get blown up in the crossfire on suspicion alone. Don't be shitheads to other people. In specific circumstances you can, but it's best to just not do it ever. All the rest is common sense, universal to any forum, or explicitly stated in the rules.

Maybe this thread should be used to judge the performance of NeoGAF moderators.

GAF should have a day where all the well-known permabanned people get to come back for a day. I want to see if Wii Will Rock U will have a breakdown again.

Hold up, that's Johan? I THOUGHT IT WAS SOME FAMOUS GIRL THIS WHOLE TIME WHY DIDN'T I REALIZE

Thread takeaway today: Holy shit, Mumei is actually a Monster fan.

Ahaha.

Yeah, the avatar is just Sackcloth and Ashes fanart that I found years back. And before this avatar, I had this screencap set as my avatar.

So yes, fan of Monster since 2006. I was once a stark raving fanboy, and while it is still one of my favorite anime, I am a bit more sane now.

If you think something has been said that moderation should do something about, try PMing a moderator about it. Sometimes we don't see a topic. It is also possible that there is a general problem in an area that we aren't seeing or aren't noticing, and pointing it out can help, though I don't know if that is necessarily the problem here or simply something you are misperceiving by noting the times that people are not banned while missing the times they are banned.

Maybe GAF should acquire an Islamic moderator to prevent this sort of discrimination.
I'm having Dragona PTSD imagining this.

The disparity between horrible things being said about Christianity and horrible things being said about Islam is that people accept Christianity as just a religion, whereas they tie culture and race in with Islam. I think that's due to GAF being overwhelmingly western, and how that twists people's attitudes about tolerance and political correctness. A scathing and sweeping indictment of Christianity doesn't get you condemned as a bigot as it would if you were talking about Islam.

I was banned a couple of days for posting the poster for the movie "Gayniggers from Outer Space" which I posted before in a different thread where even mods laughed at it :|

Oh I agree, and some bigots will actually try to hide behind the 'I'm just criticizing the religion, not the people' when they're obviously being critical of the culture. I think that most people on GAF though turn out to not be racist... at least I hope.

In the context of this forum and how civility is maintained, I'd say the people trying to draw the sinister link are a bigger problem than those trying to hide behind the religion excuse. The former are certainly the ones stifling critical discussion.

The mod who banned you sounds like they have a disturbing lack of appreciation for context.

I have a question!

When someone gets banned and their avatar no longer shows up does that mean that's a perma ban?

The mods have denied this (possible cover up?), but I've seen it happen when some of the recent juniors were banned. I've also seen some permabanned people who still have their avatars, though, so we'll probably never know the truth.

That poster is one of the funniest things ever. Some guy account suicided with it quite a while ago and I spent the next hour just chuckling to myself at it.

That seems rather.... tame. You sure that's that? I think my one week ban was undeserved and it was worse ruder than that.

Hmm, I never think having one post without Context is a good way to judge the ban... also judging bans is almost never a good idea.

Just assume that this was the last in a long string of something or other.
